Will the Soccer Team Outscore the Football Team?

Week #1 saw the soccer team outscore the football team 5-2. With the football team going up against a 1-AA opponent, and the soccer team playing only one game this weekend, I say the football team pulls it out in Week #2.

Football Zips in a blowout: 38-6 (Soccer Zips beat BG 6-0)

Week #3 looks to favor the soccer Zips. But we must take this week-by-week. No jumping ahead.

Akron Thoughts

Joe Siegferth did a great job handling the ticket requests and got us a group rate for the the seats and the Tailgate Lot. Well done Joe...BTW, he even called me after the game and asked how we were treated. Awesome customer service...thanks Joe.

Got into Macedonia, OH late on Friday night. The construction on SR 8 was never really a factor the whole weekend. We stayed at the LaQuinta and it was a good stay.

We were in Lot 34. It ( the lot and parking flow) was well run, the lot is very nice with a good strip of grass along Carroll St...Akron fans were laid back save for the Akron Rowdies who got the biggest kick out of blasting Kenny's Pennies from the post Akron '08 broadcast. Well done...I got a chuckle out of that. I invited them several times to come over and have a coney but apparently they were shy but they missed out on coney served at Heid's as seen on this episode of "Man vs. Food" I mentioned to them we no longer employ GRob and he is Michigan's problem now. Niko Tamurian (local Syracuse Sports TV guy) came by and interviewed several of us...as he was doing a story on Internet fan boards. Kenner from the Akron sports board was a good sport and got interviewed...nice guy with a great TV setup....sported a Sat TV set up and I got to watch a bit of Yukon puking on themselves.

This next paragraph is directed at the delusional Akron fans who think they should be like Can't State with $5 tickets

Personally I felt like I was back in 1990: $20-25 to sit on the 40 yard line, $5-10 to park, motels well under $75...concession prices were also priced like a minor league baseball park. Infocision is a beautiful small/medium sized stadium with great sightlines. Wide corridors and a good selection of concession items. You guys need to get real...Akron Football is great deal for 1A. Your stadium is on campus and you have a nice tailgate set up among an attractive campus. I'd rather watch a game in this setting than sitting out in some cow pasture 2 miles from campus. You are an urban university and it is a nice set up for a stadium downtown--embrace it. You need to help the rebuilding process by supporting the team and creating a home field advantage.. Bottomline: If you want to be Can't State drive 10 miles NE and sit at their crappy high school like stadium with high school ticket prices. You realize in the big boy divison ticket prices over $35 and closer to $50 is the norm? Cuse fans going next week to Washington are paying $66 to sit in the endzone.

Sadly, Akron needs to support your team...a really pathetic crowd by Akron...maybe 13k Zip fans for a season opener against a well known program. Your crowd despite being small was also quiet and sat on your a$$...a bad combo. You never made much of an effort to cheer not even early. Hello? Maybe get off your a$$ on 3rd down defensive stands? It was also a fairly lame student body...arrive late, sit with disinterest on the endzone lawn and leave early...good job students. BTW, I do like the idea of an end zone lawn...well done and it should be awesome once the crowds come.

Hopefully Coach I can get you back to their winning ways soon and get the students interested in the Zips. BTW not to slam just Akron Students our students (Cuse) are just as bad (leaving early) but they do cheer when the game is close but they bail out quickly if we fall behind in the 2nd half.

I do hope Coach I will learn kicking field goals might be safe...to lose close but to beat a better program you have to take chances....stupid, stupid call in the second half...also, I wonder if Nicely was told not to force anything? It seemed like he threw the ball (uncatchable) anytime he was pressured? Listening to the the post game interviews from both coaches was telling. Hopefully Coach I learns and moves on...

Bottomline: Akron had gracious fans and Joe Siegferth in the Ticket Office really came through for our tailgate group. I would love another series with Akron if we can get a 2 for 1 or a 3 for 2. Akron ought to like it also --->if we brought 2500-3000 fans (Joe S. still thought closer to 5k but I think it was less) off a 4-8 season what would we travel off an 8-4 season to Akron in the future? Things are looking up for Cuse. Hopefully Akron is not too far behind.

Good luck the rest of the season...hope you can make a bowl game.

Balancing the scales= BCS & Non-BCS

In thinking about transfers, balancing BCS and non-BCS schools in FBS, reading about the CAA and considering the recent talk of "Is the MAC FBS football, really?" this popped in my mind over the weekend.

You look at teams in the CAA (Villanova, Delaware, James Madison, Richmond, etc.). Read a bit about this league, and they get MANY highly touted players that transfer from the bigger schools. One that pops in my head right away (though I read about quite a few others) is Pat Devlin, QB at Delaware who was highly touted and originall at Penn State.

What if kids that went to BCS schools DID NOT have to sit out a year to go to non-BCS schools? Teams in the C-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, etc. could gain a somewhat small but perhaps slightly signficant competitive balance against the BCS schools.

I think part of why you see these CAA and other successful FCS schools succeeding against lower FBS and even struggling BCS schools (App St. vs. UM, Jack St. vs. Ole Miss) is due to these guys that can transfer and NOT sit out a year.

Just a thought...obviously thinking about the health of the MAC!!!!

iCoach quotes

I'm glad iCoach saw some of the same things I did. Here is to improvement this Saturday.

Opening Statement:
"We are certainly disappointed in how we played (against Syracuse). Overall we just did too many things that good teams don't do. Interestingly enough, we took the ball away from (Syracuse) three times and didn't turn it over once, but still lost, which usually doesn't happen. Issues came with just too many big plays against us. When you give up a blocked field goal for a touchdown, when you have a chance to cut it to 17-6, but instead its 23-3, that's a huge turnaround in a game. We could never really recover from that. I thought our defense at times played very well. (Syracuse) ended up with 430 yards against our defense, but 217 of those yards were on seven plays. If we can do a better job of eliminating some of those bigger plays and be sound on offense and not have some of those special teams snafus, I think we can get ourselves to be a good football team. I expect us to make the most improvement from our first game to our second."

Regarding Akron's offense versus Syracuse:
"I thought there were times when our receivers could have done a better job of separating and breaking off their routes. Patrick's (Nicely) scrambles had some to do with pressure, some to do with our receivers and some to do with him maybe having to step up into the pocket. So I think there's three factors involved in all of those things. I was pleased that we didn't throw any interceptions, that was a real positive on Patrick's part. The execution of our pass game, because we were forced a lot of the time to max protect and that really puts a lot on the receivers."

Regarding his first game as a head coach:
"I'm glad my first game is over with and that we have that behind us. I made my first big decision, I decided to differ, so that was my first big decision as a head coach. A lot of things go on during the game, but i was excited about that opportunity, excited about leading this team and this great university. I had a lot of family here to enjoy it. I was pleased that my father was able to be here, who hadn't seen me coach in several years. From that personal perspective it was obvious fulfillment, with what i want to do with my career, but we have a lot of work to do with this program and the time it took to answer this question is about as much time as i was given to thinking about that. We just have so much to do and I'm eager to coach this team and coach them well and for all of them to continue to get better."

Regarding the mood of the team after Saturday's loss:
"In the locker room I sensed extreme disappointment, and that's a good thing. As I told them, if they weren't disappointed and if this hadn't hurt them a bunch then we had the wrong group in there. When you put a lot of time into something and you don't get the rewards back you had hoped, then it should hurt you. I saw that in their eyes and i sensed that from them."

source
