UA is in the midst of setting its strategic plan for the next decade, and UA President Dr. Luis Proenza wants your input. Later this month, Dr. Proenza will jump aboard the Roo Express and make five stops across campus to listen to your ideas about UA’s future. The time and location of the stops are:

Wednesday, April 15
11 a.m., Stile Athletics Field House
Noon, Rob’s Cafe
1 p.m., Polsky Building Food Court

Thursday, April 23
11:30 a.m., Hattie’s Café, 491 Brown Street in University Park (map)
12:30 p.m., MarketPlace common area, Student Union

No registration is necessary; however, space is limited at each stop, so arrive early. Refreshments will be offered.

That's preposterous. Anyone who knows anything about Akron's future knows that Kuwait is ideal ground for a new branch campus.

I think we already have a decade's worth of worthy planned/unfinished projects, including the Education building, International Business building, Greek Village, Soccer stadium, outdoor living room plaza, parking decks, dorms, etc.

Another thing I would like to see would be an entrepreneurship center open to all Akron residents where anyone with an invention / product / business idea could come to campus and have access to all the resources of the university to help develop it, including graphic design/drafting, engineering/prototype-building, legal/patenting, marketing/sales, etc. In exchange, UA would get royalties from future sales. If/when a new business gets started it could then move to the Akron incubator to continue growing. I think there are a lot of people with good ideas out there but could use some help bringing them to market. A lot of jobs could potentially be created.

Good idea. Personally, I would like to see some type of buisness / technology incubator that is very visible. When I was in Kalamazoo, Mi two years ago, WMU had a very impressive incubator right by the freeway,...Engineering I think. I didn't even know WMU had an Engineering Dept, but by looking at that, you would think they really had a lot to offer.

With that said, I'm going to take a different route. I think too much focus has been on building new structures. It looks amazing, don't get me wrong, but I would like to see more money put into academics and educational equipment. The band instruments are one example. I also saw that Toledo is starting a new green energy degree. I would like to see Akron to continue to develop into a technology leader and not just in the polymer area.

Wow, I'm impressed, I don't know if the students would have been asking those questions when I was in school. I was suprised by the "Akron going Green" element and also the "Campus Crime" element. I've seen a few people mention that crime is getting worse. Back when I was on campus in the '90s, if you were in the main part of campus, no problem, the UAPD kept that place in order. Only when you wandered out of campus did you run into some rough areas. I suspect that because campus is expanding into downtown, the student population is growing, and the economy is bad that crime is growing. We had a campus student security service back then, was a great idea, except nobody used it. They would walk with you across campus to your destination at night. They had radios to the UAPD, but people are too proud to admit they need someone to walk home with them. Here is a thought, maybe UA could expand this program (If it still exists) and get the students in the Police Academy to participate. They could make rounds through campus and give reports back to UAPD. They could get class credit for participating in the program for one semester, and I'm sure a few of them would get hooked and be in the program for quite a while.
