Discussion on BigSoccer about Caleb's selection. Some seem to think that if he does well at the Olympics, then he's gone. I don't think so. At some point, I think he'll have to but he still seems to be extremely motivated with the Zips right now.

He's being groomed man. Don't treat him the way you all did Ken Lolla, OK? wink.gif Not that we'll improve when he becomes US National Coach (though I think the USA will), but we'll be a perennial top-10 for a long time. And we'll be the breeding ground.

if Porter does well in the Olympics, he could get contracts over €1,000,000 a year thrown at him. Considering his devotion to his family, I don't think he'll take a European job.

I shouldn't have mentioned any worries about losing him, this is a spectacular thing for our University and there's no need for negativity.

I think Porters ultimate goal is to be coach of USMNT (wrote about this a year ago). I think he can accomplish his goal without leaving the Zips. I still believe that he will stay until 2014 when Kinsmann's contract will be up and the US may be looking for a new coach. I hope it plays out just as coach Porter envisions. Even if we have a new coach...the publicity that comes with the World Cup will be more than anyone could imagine.

What HE said! biggrin.gif

I don't think we have to worry about MLS at this point. I trust that Caleb would recognize that adding a completely new job at this time is probably not a good recipe for success. He's established at Akron, and it takes a lot of hard work to keep the Zips successful. But, he already has the template in place for making the Zips successful...although it's a grind, it's a grind he knows and only requires tweaking. He's just picked up a great job that's added new challenges and pressure. I just can't see him taking on any more at this time.

He's not going to be going to MLS this upcoming year. Because that would conflict with the U-23 team more than if he would stay in Akron...

From a time/availability viewpoint, would be easier to get the MNST head coaching position while coaching a college team or a MSL team?? I believe that is his ultimate goal.

We will be at the game on Thursday. Hope the girls can get a big win.

The Revs are a mess and a project and it would be worse for his career than staying at Akron by far. Also, as mentioned, MLS plays through the Summer whereas college does not. How would he balance trying to get a new team to qualify for the Olympics with trying to get a new MLS team to be good again? Way too much work. Also, this hasn't been mentioned yet, but is anyone going to want to buy Porter out of his current contract? Seems like it would be too much. NE's owners have a reputation for not investing the proper money into their club. The Revs are looking at a few others guys already, not worried about this one. Now if in a few years the head coach position at a good club opens up, that could be an issue. Again, I'm not concerned yet. I hope Caleb will take the Bruce Arena route. Arena was the coach at UVA for 17 years before making the leap to the pros. After only three seasons at DC he was tapped to be the head coach of the USMNT. This shows that you don't need a ton of pro experience to be the coach of the national team.

You knda answered my question. I was more interested in the TIME involved. Is it easier to get involved with the national teams and build relationships working as a college coach or from the MSL. Given that college coaches have the summer free....it appears that it may be easier from the college ranks. At least that is my hope...that will keep Porter here through 2014.

Thanks

Received. You have to mark "save" below the input form for a copy to remain in your sent box.

Really hope the girls make the tournament. It would be a step back and sad to see when they seem to have potential. Hopefully they play with a sense of urgency and determination that was missing in the last few losses. Either way...we will be there cheering them on (unless of course...there is cold rain).

Great interview on WEWS with Coach Porter as posted in the GoZips.com article. Of note, Caleb mentioned Zarek Valentin, Perry Kitchen (who have U20 experience) and Teal Bunbury (USMNT full team experience) as being in consideration for the U23 player pool.

Thanks Zip_ME87, sounds like CONCACAF qualification will be located in Nashville. This is fantastic. Road trip.

Rumor has it some of these were present vs. BGSU.

Is that true?

I heard that Michael Nanchoff and Chris Korb were at the BG game last night. Unfortunately, I didn't see them myself.
