The band was annoying. Worse still was the band freaking playing when ever our players were attacking the opponent in the box. Communication is lost. Leading to missed opportunities. Time the racket for when play is not close to them. whats the difference between the band and 1000 students with noisemakers on corner and free kicks close to the box? Isnt fan support via making tons of noise part of the game? Im against the band playing while we're on defense, but when we're attacking, we need to make tons of noise so the defense cant communicate... thats just my opinion since thats essentially what we do already sans the band. -------------------- .13

I am Sam. Technically we only make noise while attacking in the box and we are quiet when defending in the boxes at the pouch.

The entire basis of this thread is ridiculous, and I'm taking you to the wood shed for it! Big deal, the band drowned out a few chants...don't complain! Instead, work with the director and coordinate.
The presence of the band is a unique part of the culture of soccer at UA. Embrace it! It is cool because it's part of who we are. It is a tradition that schools like OSU have in football and whom we are so jealous of. It is this exact type of thing that OSU soccer is jealous of us for. Yet, when we have the band volunteering to perform at soccer games, people resent it? WTF?! I may sound like our quintessential pacifist, DiG, but we should be promoting a culture of inclusion, not exclusion in everything that is UA. This should be especially true of attendance at soccer games. Don't complain that the band is there, don't complain that students come and don't participate as rabid fans. Appreciate that UA soccer is so good that people want to come and volunteer to cultivate the atmosphere. If such an attitude is universally adopted, the upper limit of growth of UA soccer is huge. Otherwise, we will have a great schedule and team and blame relatively mediocre end-of-the-season attendance against quality opponents on trick or treat, high school football games, and the weather. Give me a break! -------------------- "Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion!"

Right On, Trimmy10!
Shame on all of us should the Akron Pep Band no longer feel welcome! Yes, they need to coordinate with the AK Rowdies. Easily done! And yes, it can be very loud when right next to them. Work with these people. Incorporate their enthusiasm. Agree on something bigger and better. 99% NCAA Soccer programs would kill to get such support! The Pep Band needs educating; the rhythm is different for soccer. They need to be taught when to play. Which of you sluggards are the officers of AKR? Oh yeah, right now is time for your leadership!!!! Sorry, Bobby, but telling anyone that they should not attend because it cramps our particular style is just wrong. Especially right now, we need everyone we can get. Hard times are ahead for this program. The fashionable soccer fan will soon be tested. The going is getting tough and we are about to see who the faithful really are. |

Does anybody know the team's record over the past six years when the pep band is in attendance? I believe that it is significantly worse than our regular winning percentage.

How many home games a year are there?? 8 to 10?? Then this kid has been going to school for langer than 5 years. Maybe we should write off his cooments to "frustration". ...or does the band travel with the team?? -------------------- "We will shoot for perfection... but nobody's perfect. I just thought last night was a little chaotic sounding and unorganized. You can have a fairly large band involved with a supporters section, but everyone needs to be in unison. Simple rhythms, beats, and it probably helps to have some familiarity of the chants and songs. Leadership, organization, and practice.

Good point. caveat please: We were attacking and the players were trying to communicate as they attacked when the drums drowned them out. The play fizzled. Personally, I believe the players love to hear the Rowdies and other Zips fans voices. |

the band and the rowdies could use some practice. The only problem is the consistency of the band showing up. If they made it a priority to come to every game, it would be worth having them. What was on display last night didn't work. They need to learn to play in between chants. Imagine if you went to an opera and the orchestra started beating on the drums real loud while a song is being sang. The issues with the band syncing with the rowdies is worth discussion.

Last I heard from this website, most of the rowdies don't even know or participate in the chants. So why get after the band? Of course the bands gonna drowned out a small handful of people.

They started good on Wednesday but that quickly changed when the band started to play over the chants. -------------------- |

bobby is right on point... its just a matter of practice. Just imagine a couple flutes and the drums playing along with "yankee doodle," or the volume potential with the "oooooohhhhhhh, you suck!"
Its just a matter of letting the atmosphere evolve naturally. |
