Greetings Zips fans! And isn't it great to be that?!
Well, our Zips head to the crossover games with a 4-1 conference record, a one game lead over the next closest team in the East, and what appears to be a whole lot of momentum. Thought now would be an appropriate time to update the View on the current state of the Zips since the VCU game. So with the customary apology to Sergio Leone .. here goes: The Good:
Nitpicking a bit here, but tradition dictates I hit all of the categories:
.. Again, it's all relative nit picking .. unless we're talking about yellow shirts .. which are truly ugly.
R.I.P. Phil Martin, aka zip37 here at ZN.O .. I believe he passed away in mid-December, just prior to the holidays. He sat in front of me for the past 5 or 6 seasons. A more passionate hoops fan I don't think I've ever seen. The guy lived and died with each possession, and put his time & money where his heart was. If you played in the golf outing, you probably spoke with him at the check in table, or benefited from his help on the committee. The Zips have lost another huge fan this season. Best wishes to his family & I hope he's enjoying things from his new seat. Put them on Zips fans! Buckle up .. it's going to be a great ride! Go Zips! A great read, Watcher. And I agree, this team is scary good. What you said about the rotation and how it relates to MAC-level opponents is spot on! No other team has the depth to compete for a full 40 minutes on a consistent basis. We will likely lose a few more conference games the rest of the way, but I expect us to have the best record in the conference at the end of the regular season.
I also expect this group to get our first NCAA Tournament win(s) in the next couple years. There has never been a more exciting time to be a Zips basketball fan or a Zips fan in general. -------------------- "Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion!"

I keep saying it, but we have a kid on the bench who is a freshman experience wise who would start on almost any team in the country. Most teams would kill to get one guy like that. Meanwhile we put Q and C on the floor and our stud and OTHER stud Tree start on the bench. Amazing.
But the REALLY amazing thing is, Harney is 6'7". He is a big who plays inside like a guard! |

Nice job, ZW.
No question that the Zips have the talent and the depth to win the MAC. I think this season hinges on KD's ability to keep the young guys focused, disciplined and emotionally balanced. We saw how difficult that was early, and how the team definitely suffered for it. We can only hope that everybody is on the same page now and that it stays that way. I'm optimistic about that, though, because there seems to be a real appreciation on the team for the advantage that their depth gives them, as Harney's post-game comments attest. -------------------- What's a Zip? For those of you who never met Phil, you missed out on knowing a great guy and one of the best Zips fans ever. There was no event that the athletic department ever held that Phil didn't attend or support. Us older guys remember Phil as the voice of the National Weather Service broadcasts from the Akron/Canton regional Airport. Phil, you will be missed. Frank Phillip Martin |

First off, thanks ZW, always look forward to reading these. As for the above quote, I had the same exact feeling. Some players might get selfish/upset with not playing 30 minutes a game. Our team seems to not only be okay with it, but embrace it and take advantage of the minutes they get. Great sign, imo. |
