  1. Around my peers I am a think outside the box type of guy in regards to always listening and respecting both sides of and argument/opinion. One of the best courses I took at Akron was - Sociology In Organizations which for example taught me to instead of writing individuals and groups off in regards to their hatred or disagreement of me Try to find out why they feel that way. On occasions when I asked people why? They can't give me an answer because they don't know themselves and are rather following a cultural trend. Regardless of what I have personally experienced I try not to stereotype. I can easily say I "do not" stereotype but I am not perfect. I have my flaws too and I try to grow from them daily. I try not to judge a person based on their Politics, Religion and Sexuality. In regards to the waitress her actions was racially motivated as there were other things she did that lead up to her throwing a quarter at me basically treating me like I didn't belong there. This happened back in 2008 and this is the first time I have openly discussed this with anyone else excluding my friends who were there. A friend of mine has been critical of NFL owners donating to Trump's campaign. I told him I don't knock owners for donating because I don't knock owners for supporting their political party. I told him all Republicans are not racist and all people who voted for Trump are not racist. Thats the fact I believe too many people are missing and it goes both ways in regards to the Left & Right. I believe there is too much characterizing and labeling of one another these days. I personally hate Extreme Anything and thats the main problem today in regards to the lack of respect both sides have today in Politics, Religion and social issues in general. In a perfect world if we all could sit at a table and have a conversation we would have a better understanding of one another because in general its unjust to speak on what someone else is going through looking from the outside in. You rather get better insight by asking whoever directly. I rather be asked a question about me, my race and my culture vs someone settling for a blind assumption of me.

  2. You know, when you think about it, we, or Akron, or Ohio or the U.S. Government sure got its moneys worth out of the Rubber Bowl. Look at how long it lasted, how many years it was in service to all sorts of events. K92's link to the facebook page with all the cool old memorabilia form the Bowl really struck that theme home. Now just look across the landscape and see how many taxpayer funded facilities are sitting idle while another taxpayer funder facility was brought on line. I was in Michigan a lot this past year and have clients in the shadow of the Palace on Auburn Hills, and then drive down the road to Pontiac and see the ruble that was the Silver Dome. Of course we know what happened here with the Coliseum vs. Gateway. And I'm going to Atlanta this week, and I will be able to see a new bazillion dollar facility for the Falcons, built right next to a perfectly good and usable Georgia Dome....right next to it for crying out loud! So Bang for our Buck (or whomever's) was sure on the positive side.

  4. Run blocking should be the number one priority throughout practice this week. It has to improve. In the three losses, the Zips have rushed for 99 yards (Troy), 38 yards (Iowa State), and 73 yards (PSU). In BG's 4 losses, MSU rushed for 215 yards, South Dakota rushed for 214 yards, Northwestern rushed for 303 yards, and Middle Tennessee has rushed for 243 yards. Bowling Green offers a chance to get the running game on track, but I think we need a combination of running the ball at the correct time, and increasing the effectiveness of our blocking execution. Time to run the monkey off the Zips back! Every first down run play of the Troy game: (12:48 - 1st) Warren Ball run for no gain (14:54 - 2nd) EDWARDS, Van rush up middle for loss of 1 yard (11:25 - 2nd) Van Edwards Jr. run for 1 yd (3:25 - 2nd) Deltron Sands run for 2 yds (0:14 - 2nd) WOODSON, Thomas rush right for 5 yard (15:00 - 3rd) Warren Ball run for 8 yds (11:08 - 3rd) Warren Ball run for 1 yd (11:08 - 3rd) BALL, Warren rush up middle for 2 yards (holding call) (11:08 - 3rd) Thomas Woodson run for 1 yd (6:01 - 3rd) Warren Ball run for 3 yds (6:01 - 3rd) Warren Ball run for 11 yds (15:00 - 4th) Warren Ball run for 4 yds (10:00 - 4th) Warren Ball run for a loss of 1 yard (10:00 - 4th) Warren Ball run for 4 yds (4:19 - 4th) Warren Ball run for 2 yds That's a total of 39 yards on 15 runs. The Zips passed 15 times on first down also, only completing three, and getting one pass interference call. The Zips first down and ten execution, and or play calling must improve for the team to get better.

  6. St Louis' defeat of Stanford, Washington's defeat of Seattle, and the Zips' win over UMass Lowell has the Zips up to 66 in RPI rank (up from 132, if I recall). Michigan St is currently #1, Notre Dame is #7, Western Michigan is #9. Lots of opportunities to move up. Keep at it Zips; work hard.

  7. Troy is not that good. We were pathetic in the first half! I would give our D a C- at best. Their penalties helped bail us out. Our OC needs to go now; not at the end of the season. There is no imagination. People know what we are going to do(even before the staff gets the play in from the sideline). Surely they would have a check off when a LB lines up in the hole. Bowden needs to set this team and staff down and read them the riot act. He needs to demand better from all of them. Don't feed them "you played hard the whole game". I do believe our Jimmy's & Joe's have the talent to win 4 or maybe 5 more games, but will the staff put them in position to succeed?

  8. So right dre...watched my daughter run the marathon Saturday. Went to my usual spot on Glenwood to watch her run by, then tried to go to the old Metzgers to pick her up there, and had a helluva time trying to go through allthe detours and the road closings for the race...GAWD!

  9. If true, this is disappointing he feels like he let his teammates down. He did 2 or 3 tours in Afghanistan. He has the right to express his beliefs as well. It doesn't go just one way. As a Marine with one tour in Iraq, I feel I'd have done the same even if none of my coworkers decided to participate. They have no idea what he's been through as a Veteran.

  10. Thanks for sharing @dre22era. I'm certainly not calling you a liar so don't take this the wrong way, but I will say I find it hard to believe if that makes sense? I know hate exists, but it is hard to relate without seeing it firsthand and your story helps. I can say I don't think I've ever seen it hanging out with any of my minority friends/colleagues, but I could be wrong. Real world examples like yours helps me understand much more than blanket statements like "black people are oppressed!!"...which I really don't think I agree with on a widespread basis. @a-zip I'll admit I didn't read your long winded post, but your first sentence caught my eye. Just from following EPL Soccer occasionally, it seems to me that racism in Europe is a much bigger problem than it is in the US. The irony...... I usually stay away from political discussion but don't mind talking like an adult (which is rare in that realm).

  12. Funny - the Ravens and Jaguars knelt for the U.S. National Anthem BUT they stood for God Save the Queen. I wonder if the players are aware of the American Revolution? Something does not make sense to me about not standing up for the national anthem. People say they have a right to protest the song celebrating America because America has injustice, unfairness and issues that have caused pain. There is no question that injustice has existed throughout time in this country. There is no question that prejudice exists and that "all" people are treated unfairly to differing degrees. These social ills should never be tolerated, accepted or allowed to continue. However, there is danger in not standing for the anthem and seeing the American Flag as the cause of these problems. Is America perfect. No. Is America to be judged as a final product and anything less than perfect then interpreted as sure signs that it represents oppression, hatred and inequality. America like all things in life is a breathing, changing, evolving state. It has come far in its history to achieve great goals of freedom, tolerance, equality and justice for its citizens. It has done so much to help other nations survive tyranny, oppression and cruelty. Yet it still has much left to do if it is ever going to become a perfect nation. Love for one's country is not something that should be viewed from the perspective of perfection. Love for one's country should be unconditional and when something is less than perfect, its citizens should work as hard as they can to correct it. When someone sees something less than perfect in our country, they should passionately protest and explain why the injustice needs correcting. One can and should push our country to even greater accomplishments through introspection and pressure to improve. However, one's love for the country should always exist. When citizens attack the flag or the national anthem, it is an attack on the country itself. When the intensity of the attacks become full of rage and hatred, it festers into feelings of hating our country. American's should always dislike/hate prejudice, inequality, unfairness. They are social and political cancers that attack and attempt to suffocate our nation. America is the greatest nation on earth. It can sustain attacks about its history, injustice and inequalities. However, when people begin to hate the nation itself there is danger that America's ability to sustain itself will be jeopardized. Hate the cause, hate the unfairness but do not hate the country. I will never hate this country. I will never hate what it stands for or its symbols. I will accept it is less than perfect and dedicate myself to fixing its weaknesses. I will have the courage to acknowledge its flaws and to push to find answers so all Americans may be free, equal and happy. For America to achieve the harmony, peace and destiny it was created for, requires love, caring and commitment from its citizens. I will always stand for the national anthem and put my hand on my heart for the pledge of allegiance. I will do this to offer love for my country so it may continue its journey of fulfilling its basic commitments to its citizens. Millions have died honoring this commitment to the nation. Love is the only force on earth that allows people to grow, succeed and be happy. Love for one's country is essential if it is to do the same. I want clowns to juggle, actors to act, musicians to sing, basketball players to dribble and shoot, football players to run and catch and news reporters to report the news. That is what I pay for. I don't need Madonna, Rosie Odonnell, Anderson Cooper, Lebron, Martavis Bryant, Ashley Judd, Kathy Griffin, Sean Penn to try and shove their opinions at me from their ivory mansions because they have a big microphone. If they want to help causes, do what Jim Brown has been doing all of his life.....roll up your sleeves and get out there. Kneeling isn't doing ANYTHING.

  15. You mean the same year we lost to BGSU by a score of 59-10? IMO we've never looked like we were one of the best teams in the MAC. We've literally only beaten 1 MAC team with a winning record in Bowden's 5 seasons here. EMU has much worst facilities than we do, they have a smaller fan base, and just as bad of a history. We're well on our way to missing 5 postseasons in 6 years. This isn't a Dambrot situation where the team has been successful but people are wanting more. The Zips have solidly been in the bottom half of the MAC under Bowden. A coaching change is a no brainer

  16. Two years ago we looked like real contenders in the MAC. I do think you do have to er on the side of caution. Can this program really afford another iCoach? Bowden and Brookhart have achieved the same relative success. Lee Owens I've always been told was a "top" Akron coach...and yet he didn't see a winning season until his 5th season with the Zips. Then had the idiocy to fire him after a 7-5 season (of course, as has been recounted to me by others and reading MAC forums from 2003). Akron Zips football is a case study on what not to do. I do fear striking out. Every year a lose interest in Zips football, and I'm one of the young fans. I'm worried my zealotry fandom won't last another iCoach. Am I happy with Bowden? After Saturday's loss, I'm growing tired. But I've had more fun with Bowden teams than I've had with any other Zips football. So IDK what to think.

  17. You seem to be doing quite well for yourself, even with your skin color supposedly limiting you. I know many other minorities as well doing well for themselves. I also know some who aren't. I know plenty of white people who aren't doing well for themselves and plenty who are. What are some examples of the injustices you faced while living in Akron? Are you saying you were denied entry into bars or restaurants? You say you basically have to look like Tiger Woods. What do you mean you need to look like Tiger Woods? Is being clean cut and dressed nice a bad or irrational request? As I white male I can also be denied entry into certain establishments if I'm not dressed a certain way.

  18. Chris Creighton was a no name coach who took over an historically equally as bad EMU program and has them playing pretty good football right now while competing in a much tougher division. Despite being hired 2 years after Bowden, EMU looks much closer to being real contenders in the MAC. You can't let the fear of striking out stop you from playing the game. Somewhere out there is a guy who can turn the Akron program into a winner. Its Larry Williams job to find him.

  23. Reading the game thread yesterday I was amazed how some posters were implying it's ok for UA to lose as long as they aren't favored to win. I guess those Ianello seasons were successes at 1-11 as last as Akron was expected to lose every game. i wonder if the reasons we are favored to lose is because of the coaching staff. Novel idea, I know. I give any coaching staff at least 2 years to become winners. It takes time to get "your players" on the team. After 6 years, 100% is on the staff. If the talent isn't there, whose fault is that? It's the coach that recruited and developed that talent. Lack of facilities and a garbage off campus stadium haven't been excuses for a long time now. Sooner or later people need to wake up to the real issue.

  24. Even though your friends might be geographically challenged, they obviously know nothing about recent Sun Belt football. Troy won 10 games last year, beat Southern Miss on the road, and lost 30-24 to Clemson (The National Champ who absolutely pounded OSWho, if you need to be reminded). http://sunbeltsports.org/standings.aspx?standings=28 But please, continue with your tirade that losing to Troy is a loss to a garbage football program. There's a reason why they were so heavily favored against us. You might want to to a little research before posting next time.
