  1. It's definitely a factor, even if its only a small one. I kept cable a long time just because I enjoyed watching ESPN before bed. I would also listen to ESPN Radio on my commute to work and back and while sitting at my desk at work. I cut back my viewership (and eventually just quit watching/listening all together) not only because of the politics talk but also because of the constant TMZ journalism. I give zero sh!ts about which player is hooking up with whose girlfriend/mom/sister. I can't stand the constant making news stories based entirely off speculation and zero facts. They got away from real reporting and talking about the on the field/court product. I can't be the only one that felt the same.

  2. Success and failure depends on what the expectations are. Last year we expected an NCAA berth. This season, I don't think that's the expectation

  4. As for me, going to Detroit for the MACCG is more exciting (and meaningful) than any bowl game. I dare not say more than that in fear of the jinx.

  7. In not so many words, Lee is correct. There doesn't appear to be any logical scenario that does NOT include beating OU. But as I said previously, we don't have to beat BOTH Miami and OU, if Miami losses to to OU on Tuesday. But, if we do beat both of them, and own both head-to-head tiebreakers, we would actually clinch the East title before our final game against Kent.

  8. No what!? Thats what 'the experts' said in 2005. No way Akron could beat NIU 2 times in one season. I assume you know how that ended? Not saying that this team is as good as JD's 2005 team, its not! But If these guys get on a roll I want to be in Detroit to see what happens. Better than what has happened the last 6 years.

  9. The line of demarcation is top 8. That is what matters. The difference between #16 and #9 is insignificant. Teams getting the first round bye is very significant. More often than not, the champion will come from these top 8 teams getting the first round bye.

  10. I know it’s a big “if” that it even happens, but the thought of the kids playing the biggest game of their career in front of a pitiful crowd makes me very sad.

  12. We watched the entire Akron/Buffalo game on at our tailgate in Ames. To be honest, I found myself wanting to cheer for both, especially when my nephew didn't play. Now, I'm back to cheering wholeheartedly for you guys for the rest of the season.

  13. I love the stuff being brought up here. I recently was contacted by Spectrum (Time Warner) offering a "al la carte" option similar to Sling TV for basically the same price, streaming through my internet. Why on earth would I switch to your BS provider for the same thing I already have? Cable needs use the Cord to provide you the al la carte option to be competitive IMHO. But what we're seeing is a demand of quality over quantity. I don't need 140 channels, if I can pay for the 6 channels I watch (and CBS, FOX, ABC are all free anyways over broadcast). I'm much more willing to pay per-channel if it's only the ones I want, over a Package that's uber-expensive to get very few channels. I think this is where ESPN has messed up. They've tried to be too much and haven't focused on their mission. The want to be sports AND non-sports entertainment AND talk-show AND politics show. All while losing what they were good at somewhere along the line. I'm mostly annoyed with what I see on ESPN, not interested, outside of watching games.

  14. I read somewhere... not going to take the time to look into this so take it w/ a grain of salt... but I read it had to do w/ ESPN getting into a contract w/either the NFL or NBA (again, don't have time to look into this) & waaaay overspending for the broadcast rights. That, compounded with the fact ppl are now cutting the cable left & right & ESPN is not in a very good position for the foreseeable future. They're probably fortunate they're now a Disney property.

  16. I haven't watched ESPN for anything other than games for years... I cut the cord on cable last year as well and now just have subscription services. The hardest part for me was getting rid of DirecTV because I always had the Sunday Ticket package. The price just wasn't worth it to me anymore given that I'm a Cowboys fan and 75-90% of their games each year are nationally televised. I have NFLN and a sports package that gives me NFLRedzone and watching rendzone fills the gap when there isn't a game on that I'm really interested in. Saving a ton of cash each year by not paying for 150+ channels that I don't watch. I seriously only watch 1-2 shows on regular TV (which I can get with digital antenna) and I just have the subscription service to get me the ESPNs, NFLN and CBSSN (along with some other select sports channels). A la carte TV is the way to go.

  17. I know it's meaningless, but the Zips are now #5 on the topdrawersoccer ranking: https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-national-rankings/men Louisville is #13. I don't know why they're getting so little respect ...

  18. No way. You don't fire people at a mega corporation like ESPN over a momentary 2-3 week blip in the radar. Massive layoffs don't happen because of a week-to-week slump. They happen because of month after month after month of slumps. They happen when you build off of speculation and projection rather than actual real-time demand. Again, no way in hell this rash of layoffs is connected one iota to the momentary decline in NFL viewership. For one, the NFL isn't a fraction of viewing on ESPN, very few (almost none) are aired on ESPN. College football and College Basketball is the real cash cow at ESPN.

  19. 6-7 teams get priority over 5-7 teams. In a system where ~60% of the teams make a bowl with fewer and fewer schools scheduling FCS opponents, its statistically improbable for a 6-6 or for a 6-7 team to not make a bowl.

  20. It was about Giving "Roosday" every Tuesday in November. If you give $25 you get a Zippy decal and if you give $50 you are eligible for the Weekly Prize (Sounds like it will vary between Zips sports tickets, maybe some EJ tickets or something else if I was reading between the lines correctly). They will announce on Monday what the prize for the week is.

  23. Important to note they weren't really splitting time Saturday, at least most of the game, considering Alvin was ejected early. It is good to see them both play well though. I've always thought George was more of a natural SS or (or even a smaller LB like Bischof) than a corner, although I do think he would probably be a better corner than Butler. I really don't know who we have behind the #3 CB though...

  24. I think all of us want however many paths the Zips can get to the MAC East Championship. 1. Easy one - win the next two and it's done regardless of what happens against Kent or what Miami or OU does. 2. A loss to OU - need some combination of Zips getting one more win than the Kittens (Beat Kent and Miami while OU loses to Miami and Toledo say) but it is still possible to win the division without beating OU. 3. A loss to Miami - Same scenario as #2, have Miami lose to OU, Ball St or EMU and Zips win their final two. If they trip up more than once Zips have breathing room but still very tough. 4. Lose to Miami and OU - Must beat Kent (as is always wanted :-)) OU must lose to Miami, Toledo and Buffalo, and Miami must lose to EMU and Ball St. Don't even want to think about this one. There are other scenarios too but lets see what happens Tuesday and things will be a little clearer. Just want as many chances for the Zips to win it as possible.

  25. Well,1 down and 3 to go. Not sure if I would lump Miami in with KS.U though. If Ragland is back at QB thats an even tougher one down there. Miami is solid. Buffalo with its #1 QB is and will be a tough out in the future. I still think its going to take getting the OU 'monkey' off their backs to get a trip to Detroit. But,Akron's defense doesn't match up well with OU's running game. But,just like the UB game you find a way to keep it close and win at the end. Right now it doesn't matter how. Don't know how many of you were around to actually see the 2005 season. What a hoot. But, the Zips did the same thing then. They kept games close enough to give themselves a chance to win in the 4th QTR. They beat NIU at the Bowl during the regular season at the last minute. At the time NIU was the best team in the MAC. Zips got some breaks with the tiebreakers, had to beat KS.U in the Blizzard Bowl on Thanksgiving And the rest is history. Right now folks don't worry about how, as long as they do it.

  30. I think it depends on the situation. As I understand it correctly, all 6-6 teams must be taken first(unless on probation), then if you must take a school with a losing record, it will be based on APR first. I believe that is how Georgia Tech got a Bowl invite a few years back....

  31. Winning out, or not, is not the issue I'm addressing here. It's winning the MAC East. And we can't win the MAC East just by beating OU at home, if Miami keeps winning.
