  1. I am still in disbelief that we are in this game. Incredible!

  2. Interesting that 2 of the matches are Friday night. I hope we smoke them. This will be a war. My bulletin board would be one big Lolla quote, saying that he can't win a championship at Akron.

  3. Still recovering from Saturday p.m. Just a few random thoughts. Great crowd on hand, given all the particulars around the weekend - T-Day, OSU-Mich, school closed, etc...Huge walk-up attendance, and the entire reserved seating sold out. (No kidding!). Mueller is an outstanding athlete and a great player. Their coach is a class act. Dave Bacon and Otto Orf have become fixtures at Cub Cadet, and that's a good thing. No sales of merchandise...either U of A or NCAA College Cup - disappointing. Gorgeous sunset. I was getting a little cocky in my attitude, and I needed this match to knock me down a few pegs. When Sam scored his first, my attitude was "This ones over!" Stupid, I know. Came crashing back to earth with the Badger equalizer, and it was a thing of beauty in its own right. Then was SURE it was over when Sammy hit his brace. "Afterall", said mt brain, "no one has scored more than 1 on us all season!" BAM! back to earth. Now I am a lot more wary going forward. Always great to see the interaction between the players and the Rowdies post-match, but for those of you that leave right away or watch on TV, the player-fan interchanges are heartening to watch and to eaves-drop on once in awhile. Anyway, wish we had one more at FES/CCF to enjoy. GO ZIPS!

  4. No time for 'Woe is me. If we just had the 4 seed.' The Zips' seeding in this tournament was fair. Our Zips can do this, but they have to want it more than Louisville. Given the way the Zips looked at the end of regulation v Wisconsin, I'm not sure that is the case. It's time to see if Jared, staff, and team can do something that Caleb Porter, staff, and team could not ... get to the College Cup without having a top 4 seed. Others have done it, but they wanted it more than their opponent and found the way to grind it out. Hopefully, these Zips will do the same and stop looking to the referees when they get a little bump. Man up. Hard nose soccer gets it done in this tournament. Go Zips!!!

Congratulations to Scott Caldwell on having his 2018 option picked up by the New England Revolution. https://www.revolutionsoccer.net/post/2017/11/27/revolution-announce-year-end-roster-moves Repeated from another thread (now realizing it is time to start this one)... Congrats to former Zip Saad Abdul-Salaam, whose 2018 option was picked up by Sporting KC. https://www.sportingkc.com/post/2017/11/27/sporting-kc-exercises-options-11-players-ahead-2018-mls-season I missed this back on November 16th...Montreal exercised their 2018 option for former Zip Evan Bush... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/11/16/montreal-impact-announce-roster-moves-will-extend-blerim-dzemailis-loan

  6. Lots going on in Zips sports, with the Football program's winning the MAC East, Men's soccer going to the Elite 8, and men's and women's basketball starting up. Easy to overlook our 4 time defending MAC Champion swimmers and divers. The women went to Cleveland for the Magnus Cup and dominated, with Maddy Myers cleaning house in the 100 back, 200 IM, 50 breast and the 100 IM, where she is now the fastest in the nation NCAA. Paloma Marrero, Ellie Nebraska, Sadie Fazekas, Paulina Nogaj, Brooke Lamoureux, all winners. Relays dominated. Carly Krail won both 1 and 3 meter dives. I know all eyes will be on Cub Cadet field Friday eveing and Ford Field at noon on Saturday and the JAR that afternnon, but this weekend the Zippys host their own Zippy Invitational for three days/nights Friday thru Sunday, and these women deserve some attention. Stop by Ocacek if you get a chance, you'll be amazed.

  8. Being selfish, I would love Detroit because it's the only bowl I could make this year. For the team, probably the experience would be better just about anywhere else. On a different note, depending the outcome of the last couple make-up games out there, it looks like between 3 and 6 bowl-eligible teams will be left home. I'm thankful we took care of business in our rivalry game because I would have to guess UA and Buffalo at 6-6 in the MAC East would be at/near the top of teams not being selected. As it is, Buffalo is probably in a decent amount of danger to not receive a bid.

  9. ESPN "experts" have us in: Dollar General Bowl Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile, Alabama Dec. 23, 7 p.m. (ESPN) Bonagura: Akron vs. Georgia State and Quick Lane Bowl Ford Field, Detroit Dec. 26, 6:15 p.m. (ESPN) Hale: Duke vs. Akron I like both games and the opponents. First, the games are tight on the calendar to Christmas, so the exposure for the progrum and UA should be excellent...lots of people off work and at home or traveling with teevees on in airports and bars and not much else to show. Second, the locations are ideal. Bowden has a big name in the south including AL and FL, and playing a bowl game there has the potential to garner the attention of recruits and their families. Obviously, Detroit is close and helps with alumni attendance and recruiting. Finally, both opponents are fair match-ups on paper. They are very winnable games, particularly if we want it more than they do. Duke is also a P5 program with household name recognition. I don't believe we've played either in the history of Akron Football, which provides additional interest for me, personally. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/21568451/week-13-college-football-bowl-projections-2017

  10. I'm not going to say that Toledo can't beat us by 20 points. But, to be listed as a 20-point underdog is a complete lack of respect.

  11. Oh, well there you go, gettin all statistical on me and stuff! . I hope your statistics agree with mine that show Jordan Darrell Davis #41 as the leading scorer with 26 points. Cunningham's 20 point/16 rebound night came so easily that I'm sure I wasn't the only one who missed that statistical greatness. But I lay dibs on being the first to spell Antetokounmpo correctly. Ta da! Seriously (as if I weren't always), I think our team is more able to show it's athleticism in this offense than the 'find-an-open-jumper' scheme we've seen the past few years, such that I predict they will be highly competitive come Mid American Conference season.

  12. It also needs to be noted that Can't State has dropped 3 in a row to SE Louisiana, Valpo, and Loyola Chicago. By the way, BGSU was 2-4 pts behind Akron in the MAC East pre-season poll, FWIW.

  13. So! Round 3 - the round of 16 - is now in the books, and we're now down to the Elite 8. And we have a new November Numbness Leader! SBZipfan had 4 correct picks with Wake Forrest, Stanford, Akron and Indiana. ZipsVoice (that's me!) had 6 correct picks in Wake Forrest, Akron, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State and Indiana. Zip_ME87 weighed in with 6 correct picks as well with Wake Forrest, Akron, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State and Indiana. lilroodude was right 5 times, with Wake Forrest, Stanford, Akron, Louisville and Indiana. fknbuflobo came in with 6 right - Wake Forrest, Akron, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State and Indiana. Z.I.P. picked 7 of the 8 Elites, with Wake Forrest, Stanford, Akron, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State and Indiana. and Zippyfan34 had 4 correct teams, Stanford, Akron, North Carolina and Indiana. All correct picks were worth 3 points. Here are you standings: Leader - Z.I.P. 30 points + 21 new points = 51 2nd (tie) - fknbuflobo and Zip_ME87 31 points + 18 new points = 49 4th - ZipsVoice 29 points + 18 new points = 47 5th - Zippyfan34 33 points + 12 new points = 45 6th - lilroodude 29 points + 15 new points = 44 7th - SBZipfan 25 points + 12 new points = 37 WooHoo! 15. I am from Painesville, home of the mighty Lake Erie College (enrollment ~1,000) Storm. The Storm (3-3, GLIAC) took BG to overtime at the Stroh before falling by 3. Though it's early, the MAC is currently 16th of 32 teams in RPI. RPI forecast has the league forecasted to finish 10th between the MWC and WCC, which would be fantastic (and 2 spots ahead of the A-10). The Zips should be favored for the next 5 non-conference games leading into the tournament matchup with USC. As for this game, the Mocs at 1-3 overall are in the bottom 3rd or RPI. I'm hoping for a double digit win here.

  18. I think it's fair to say this team has beat all of our expectations and overcome odds that we did not believe possible, so why not the MAC Championship? This is an excellent opportunity for us to use both QBs. Kato seems to be working with a limited playbook and not yet up to working through his progressions to hit his second and third targets. Use Woody to work the offense and Kato in spurts to pick up the pace. Kato only had 6 completions last week. We need better to win. As far as defense goes, it isn't the same defense that played Toledo last time, yet it is not the 2015 defense, either. I would also force Woodside to win with his arm. He is good for 2 picks, which we should be able to convert to points. I feel that our DBs have gone from good to great and our DBs are up for the challenge. I also agree with this. We got in Rourke's head and would love to do the same to Woodside. I do not care who catches the ball, as long as we make catches. I loved the late season pressure on the QB. Let's keep it up. We don't look good on paper, but there is not stat for wanting it more than the other team. This team has gutted its way to beating BG, WM, and Ohio, as well as retaining the Wagon Wheel. It's not a mistake or fluke we are here.

  20. Info on their stadium.... their attendance has really been down this year... 833 last week... back in 2014....they were getting crowds of 5,000 to 7,000 I am sure that Larry Williams will make several buses available for fans to see the mediocre football team get pulverized by Toledo in the MAC title... mr. Marquette...better make sure...that he makes a bus available for the AK Rowdies to travel down to Lolla-Land !!! http://www.uoflsports.com/facilities/?id=10

  21. You’re going to have to shutdown the run and force Woodside to throw much of the game while pressuring him nearly every series. Both Miami and Ohio were successful in that areas. Youll probably have to score 40 points to win which is possible against Toledo’s defense but they have improved quite a bit. We are more susceptible against the run than pass. i just think with the game being indoors and in front of a large Toledo contingent that we will score often. Unless, of course, Woodside gets injured... But, major props beating Ohio and getting here. If you guys were playing anyone but my Rockets I’d be pulling for you. I did some graduate work at Akron so I do have a soft spot for the university.

  25. The news of KD leaving stunned me, primarily because I had bought into the KD story: Akron boy, Akron mom, Akron grad, Akron success story. I wanted him to stay and be our coach for years. But after taking some time there are a few thoughts I want to share. KD's decision was emotional not logical. He was going to leave when he realized he had his best team and he couldn't get 'em to the NCAAT. So blame everyone but yourself. The irony is that the greatest single factor in getting this team to the NCAAT was KD himself. At the end of the season his team was not prepared. He did not coach what to do if Big Dog is shut down, or what to do if the 3's aren't going in, or how to stop a hot dribble penetrator like Walker, or how to switch to a zone, or how to play with discipline, or how to shoot FT's (a lacking hallmark of his teams) or how to make good decisions under pressure. All those things he controlled yet didn't coach them up. So who is the problem here? It wasn't a lack of talent, it was how he used it and therefore he controlled the team's destiny. A new venue won't change that. He could have had a better job than DU like Dayton, but he was emotional. He took the first train out. At Duquesne the job will be just as hard as at Akron and his chance for an NCAAT legacy is doubtful. That being said he had to leave because he lost the team and the lockerroom. These players stop playing for him. It was displayed in their lack of discipline, their fundamental errors of jumping up in the air and then deciding to pass, their lackadaisical turnovers, their on again off again defense. They were often out-hustled by lesser talent and KD was out-coached at the end of the season by Miami, BG, Kent, and UTA. When they won it was because they had more talent, not heart or effort. This episode proves to me that Akron is what it is... a mid-major in a lousy conference that will be a stepping stone program. That takes some of the romance and hope out of the story for me. I always wanted to believe that we could catch fire and grow to be a Gonzaga over time. Without fundamental change will never happen. The biggest change of all, to me, is getting the students to attend/pack the games. When that happens the games become an event, then publicity, fans, donors and facilities follow. Finally, as we look for a new coach let's cut the crap about us being so financially strapped. Wilson will balance the budget in two years. From there we can grow and not look back. Our credit rating will improve and programs will expand. Give him time. If you made it this far thanks for reading. "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Still am and always will be a Zip.

  26. ESPN3 is a valuable tool for MAC schools (Crain's full article) By KEVIN KLEPS ...Akron's high-definition broadcasts on ESPN3 — the Worldwide Leader's online streaming service — are produced by Classic Teleproductions and originate from a production room in which the university invested about $500,000 on a studio and new equipment. It's a costly endeavor for an institution whose budget problems have been well-documented, but one Akron feels is necessary because of its obligations to ESPN and the Mid-American Conference. The Zips, like their MAC peers, also believe streaming athletic events is a way to increase the school's exposure and add to its appeal with athletes and wanna-be broadcasters....
