  1. An entertainingmoment from the press conference, summarized, here. Bowden: We are the Akron Zips, which is our mascot, the kangaroo, which is [named] Zippy, that comes from actually a zipper that came from a boot. But now that that’s all said, the players really like the Z [helmet sticker], The Z is a cool thing. They like that better than the kangaroo head. Kiffin: I’m not very educated. Did you just say there’s live kangaroos in Akron? Bowden (referring to Kiffin’s previouse school, Alabama, which has an elephant as a mascot): There are no elephants in Tuscaloosa. You know the deal. People do crazy things. People do crazy things. I grew up in West Virginia we had the Mannington Gators. There’s no gators in West Virginia, either. But anyway. Mayor Haynie: We have Owls. Kiffin: I’ve actually not seen an Owl, so that might not be true, really. I saw raccoons on our campus this morning when I was driving in, though.

  3. The Boca Raton Renaissance is closer to campus (there's a lot of hotels in the area). They have a FAU Alumni discount you just tell them Boca Raton Bowl Fan Block and you get the rate of $169. Need to book by 12/11. 1-800-321-0472. Nice hotel. Check out the Bowl rates for PGA Resort though that is a world class facility.

  4. Tempering expectations, as someone previously did, I went with 16-19. I don't think the MAC is very good, and it will come down to the ability to steal some on the road, which we haven't done yet. I definitely think 20+ is possible though.

  5. I picked 16-19 only because they are a young team and they haven't shown that they can win away from the "friendly confines"...

  6. This year, in all 7 football divisions combined, zero Freshman made 1st or 3rd team All-Ohio, and only 2 Freshman made 2nd team All-Ohio. The 2 Freshman who made 2nd team All-Ohio are: 6-0 198 Jaylon Anderson from Perry in Division IV as a RB, and 5-8 155 Marquael Parks from Orrville in Division V as a DB. I have only seen Marquael Parks play. He plays both offense and defense, and is good at both. The way he plays sort of reminds me of Jo Jo Natson. Keep an eye out for him as this kid has a ton energy and is explosive. Here are some of his highlights. Sheron Phipps, another 2 way Freshman player for Orrville this year didn't get any All-Ohio recognition, however he is also very talented and fast. Here are some of his highlights Parks and Phipps scored almost all of Orrville's TDs this year.

  9. The Philly soccer page is really impressing me with some excellent analysis 4 zips mentioned... I love their writeup on Joao http://www.phillysoccerpage.net/2017/12/08/16-players-to-watch-in-the-2017-college-cup/

  10. My son in law works for a small D3 college in Mich and his highlight so far this school year is being the person to choose the new T-shirt cannon. He got to play with several!

  11. A good number of the season-ticket packages are Z-fund donations. My Akron-Alumni package ($170) in some part counts as a Z-Fund donation as well, though it's not listed as a "season ticket" purchase, because if gives season tickets to all sports.

  13. Nice little shout out in Cool Cleveland! Freshman Zips defender Daniel Strachan (#25) was finishing up his senior year at Lakewood High School a year ago. In his freshman year at Akron he has started every game, and now the soccer star, who previously played for Internationals Academy of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and was rated as the 18th-ranked player in the Great Lakes Region this year, is hoping to make a dream come true by becoming NCAA champions. After beating Louisville this week, TopDrawerSoccer.com named Strachan, along with Akron teammates goalie Ben Lundt (of Berlin, Germany) and fellow defender freshman Joao Mouthino (of Lisbon, Portugal) to its National Men’s Soccer Team of the Week. http://coolcleveland.com/2017/12/lakewood-soccer-star-daniel-strachan-enjoying-akron-zips-journey-college-cup/

  14. We have a pretty good Engineering department at UA. Maybe some physics major can figure this one out?

  15. We have a "cannon" that shoots tee shirts into the second row. I feel bad for the kids up top...they scream like crazy for a shirt, and 99.7% of them land in Blue Hair Land. How many shirts can the elderly use? We need an "Adult Diaper Cannon" if we aren't going to fix that thing.

  17. I thought that Fort Wayne played very good basketball. They moved the ball well, were good shooters, and played good defense. We were great on the offensive boards. Everyone on this team is athletic, can jump and is strong. It lead to a lot of offensive rebounds and 2nd point shots. Poke had a career game. I heard him on the post game, (his first radio interview) and he indicated that his teammates were looking for him and gave him some great passes. The Zips did a great job of penetrating and dishing. We also had some great baseline movement without the ball. I am very impressed with this team and the coaching. I think we had 11 steals. I cannot remember our team having that many steals against a solid team. The played the 1-3-1 zone well and it lead to several turnovers. Never thought the team would play this well this early. Looking forward the the next game Saturday. Go Zips!!

  18. Poke was good around the basket and showed his offense has improved some. He range has increased from point blank range dunks to 3 feet. His free throw shooting has improved. I like how Groce jumps a kid but then takes a minute to give direction. He'll also yank a kid, give him hell, then get him back in. I like the short memory. His assistants are also well engaged in the process. Still not sure how that Smith kid ended up on the floor. He's not in the yearbook or on the online roster. I think maybe he won a student raffle.

  19. Man Poke looked good in the pick and roll tonight and defending the rim. I love Parrish's game and the way he rebounds. Need more composer from our Sr point gaurd. Cotton looked like he belonged tonight. Thought Groce did a good job with timeouts to calm his young team down. Nice win for the Zips! IPFW can really shoot the rock.

  20. If it wasn't for the gorgeous, year-round weather you guys have, you would think this is Akron. Are you sure "FAU_dad" isn't a typo? It could easily be UA_dad based on the similarities between the universities.
