So, you've looked at his game, and his "specialty" is simply his size? Not too encouraging. You'd think by now that you might be able to find an area where he could help us. I can't find it. I see 28 rebounds in 242 minutes. Incredibly, I see 15 more fouls than points (I didn't know that was possible). I see 20 turnovers vs. 4 assists. So, I guess "running the offense through him" hasn't emerged as a viable option either. Maybe roughing-up an opponent's star big man for 5 minutes a game is an option?

I had so much fun responding to everyone last night that I'm all out of "likes". And that's a bummer because I agree with so many of the observations pertaining to K-lac. I will just add that I think it's possible that in a couple of years K-lac could play smarter, faster, and under control. He could become a rebounding machine. He could develop an outside shot forcing the opposing bigs to follow him out of the paint. He could get efficient in the offense and set perfect picks for his teammates and he could be the only guy you know who is 6'-11" that is eager to dive on the floor for a loose ball. It's possible that all of these improvements happen in time and yet K-lac will rarely ever start for Akron due to match-ups. I don't golf personally, but I know that there are a bunch of clubs that are used on a regular basis and some that you carry for that specific situation. I look at the basketball roster in a similar manner. K-lac and Loren Jackson find themselves on the opposite ends of the roster spectrum, but both are specialists. Loren brings elite speed, ball-handling and shiftiness. K-lac as they say, you can't coach size. They will train to be the best, most versatile players they can be, but K-lac is the one guy on this team who will only be a center and Loren Jackson will likewise only be a point guard. Everyone else will eventually learn between 2 and 4 positions. I call K-lac an earth-mover because it's his job to move mountains and avoid what Ball State did to our poor Lucas Smith. K-lac is the driver in Akron's golf bag, but most of the time we will be best served with a 2-Iron at the 5 position. How was that for a non-golfer?

This is just a thread to discuss the team, the past, the current season as we lead up to the game at PCCC. I have some construction going on at my house, so as I wait for them to leave (and not wanting to to turn on the TV and face all the bad news) I turned to my favorite topic The Zips. This whole Groce/Dambrot thing is dividing us all a bit on here. Looking back at the Dambrot years, they were really exciting. I loved all those trips to Cleveland, but FOR ME I hated the tourney losses more. I went to Detroit for the VCU game. That was just a horrible draw for the Zips and the coaching staff knew it immediately. Having no point guard was bad enough but then two guys got the flu. What was a coach to do? Remind us a bit of what's happening now? While I keep VCU in perspective, there were many more losses at big moments that just left me really sad as a fan. (Ok, just there I sounded like a Bobcat Attack dweller). Dambrot Exits Stage Right: For reasons only known to the parties in the room at the time, Dambrot left for Duquense. He got a big raise and a chance to play in a better conference where good teams are forced to play on his home floor. It's a multi-bid conference where he can rack of quality wins without leaving the conference to get them. It looks like he's doing well. When he left, some players went with him and three guards transferred for various reasons. Maybe some were already planning on leaving. We also lost Big Dog and Kwan. Although, Big Dog was the really big loss and the hardest to replace. The only tall guy left at that point was Eman and the unproven (redshirt) freshman Sayles. The good news was that Ivey and Utomi stayed. So on Dambrot's departure (and to me it doesn't matter whether he poached players or not) there were two solid guys and a back up center who was a foul machine much like a certain other guy we have playing now. Groce Enters Stage Left: John Groce. The Kitten hero and the bane of our existence along with his star guard DJ Cooper. He helped make this vicious rivalry versus Ohio. God, he was annoying. Frenchy called him "a clown." He took Ohio to the second round of the NCAA with a big upset over Georgetown. The next year, with the same team, he lost early in the MAC. That year we had probably the best game I can ever remember attending: MAC championship with over Kent. However, the next year, Ohio, Groce, and Cooper were back and took us out in the finals and then swept into the Sweet 16 with the help of a good draw and then almost took out NC. Many wonder...what if Brian Walsh made that basket? What would have happened to Groce? Well, i assume they might have made an NIT run and would be back the following year with the same team. And who knows what would have happened. Did Groce catch lightning in the bottle? I didn't follow his career at Illinois, but it obviously wasn't good enough to keep him around. They wanted him out and were willing to pay him millions to leave. But it's tough at least for me to compare Big Ten coaching situations to the MAC. So he's fired. And we hire him. We get a good deal. We save some $$ for a few years. What is the goal? What were Williams, Wilson, and Van Horn thinking when they hired Groce? What did they want for the program? Did they want the same regular season success of Dambrot? Or did they want more of the Ohio U model? Or did they want to start over and bring a guy in who could truly bring us to dominance so that we absolutely outclass the BGs and directional schools every season. I have no idea, but I guess my hope is the third option. Maybe some of you think they weighted Groce's prior success too much. I wasn't there. I don't know. This Season: Yes, there were those of us, myself included, who were/are absolutely pro-Groce. Of course, that is subject to change. However, at least for me I want to be optimistic. I liked what I saw with the team he and his staff cobbled together. I like the style of play, and, hell, we were winning. However, a trip to Hawaii, an ugly loss at home to Buffalo, a effortless loss to EMU away, and injuries to our two big men left us wondering what the hell has happened to our team. We certainly aren't used to this. I'm certainly noticing a few more empty seats. Maybe those who will always re-up their tickets don't make it to every game now. But anecdotally the folks I talk to at the game who have been there for years are still positive about the team and the coach. Perspective: As noted above, those tourney losses were hard on me as a fan. I also began to realize last year that these 20+ win seasons were a mirage and not worth much to me as a fan and didn't mean anything at all if we collapsed in the final game. While that record looked good and the company we kept was good, if you knew who we played well it didn't mean that much. We had that home winning streak. Second longest in the nation. But someone on here said that wasn't too hard because we only had to get up for a few games a year at home. (Wow, to only have that problem this year.) So for me, when I heard Dambrot was leaving I was basically indifferent, and I am enjoying a new team, new coaches, and a new start even with the losses. I really want to get a game in Cleveland, but like the rest of you that seems so unlikely. I don't blame Groce for that. Next year I might. But not this year considering the big picture. The Players: On this topic, as to who will stay and who will go I would defer to all of you. If Groce and his group are going with the third option mentioned above of building a dominant program then they may cut a few loose that may surprise us.

It's strange how so many of those wins were in conference games. Yes, the same conference where we've won 4 games this year. Those Dambrot years were so embarrassing.

It wasn't our best game of the season I'd give you that, but calling it an embarrassment is a stretch. Embarrassing is losing by 24 to the last place team in the MAC like we witnessed a week and a half ago or not making it to Cleveland for the tournament, which seems like a very real possibility given our recent play.

I have purposefully refrained from commenting for last 4-5 wks to listen to all the K.D. haters and Groce lovers, but I think Skip is spot on. I have seen nothing from K-lack to suggest he will be anything more than a 5 minute a game, bottom of the bench player. Many of you posters who preferred 1 meaningful win to 21 win seasons are now calling 1 win over CMU "meaningful" I know some of you are hoping for 1 home game in the tournament as "meaningful" my how perceptions have changed let me be clear, I am not anti-Groce. He inherited an impossible situation and did the best he could. So he gets a pass. What I do find bewildering is the notion that K.D. accomplished so little and that 1 or 2 tournament wins trumps everything. We shall see how a 12-13 win seasons helps or hurts recruiting

Just got another robo call from the Stinky Pinky reminding me of the Gold Out against Akron this Saturday. Man his voice is full of joy and excitement.

I can't see them firing him being 1 year removed from making the NCAAT.

Groce talks about recruiting "basketball players" which means he is looking for guys of a certain personality profile and athleticism with the potential of mastering all the skill sets. It's really more about a system and less about recruiting for a specific position, the exceptions I would argue are the roles Loren and K-lac play. The fact that K-lac is even on the team says to me that Groce believes he has the potential to develop and mature into a well-rounded player which also means being capable of running the court. I believe K-lac's role is special because he is more than just the biggest player or club in the coach's golf bag, his job is to be the last line of defense against the big boys in the paint. Even though the whole team will develop and use post-up skills, K-lac must master the traditional center position. Similarly for Loren Jackson, when all else fails he needs to be the reliable option for breaking down opposing defenses off the dribble. On one end of the roster you have reliable speed and quickness and on the other end you have reliable size and strength, but throughout the players are as versatile and interchangeable as possible. You might not think of size and strength alone as a specialty, but I can tell you of one Big Ten team who would love to have a senior version of K-lac right about now. Illinois is the Lucas Smith of the conference. Anyway, K-lac needed a true redshirt year with a D-1 program to develop his body. No offense to IMG. K-lac shouldn't even be on the court right now so he should be thrilled with this opportunity. If only he would stop fouling. Actually, all of these freshmen are playing minutes they have not earned, but the process has to start somewhere. Maybe in the end K-lac is too slow and doesn't cut it, but he looks like a kid who cares a lot and is willing to put in the work. So I'm bullish on K-lac long-term. I wish you could attend practices, because you would likely see K-lac doing a whole lot more than he is allowed to do in games. Then again, you would likely see a lot of rookie mistakes as well. In time as K-lac proves himself in practice, Groce will expand his role in games. I hope this helps, Skip. It's my best answer. I imagine you wish Coach Dambrot was still at Akron. Well, I wish Groce was still at Illinois. If you figure out how we can turn back time I am all ears. But until then, it looks like I'm the biggest Zips fan alive with absolutely no ties to the school. Go Zips!!

Color me shocked that Skip can't see anything good about a part of this team

He's such a baller, he has Can't at 6-7 in the MAC in one of the worst MAC fields in quite some time. I also don't want to be following any blueprints made by Mr. Pinky. I wouldn't be surprised if this is his last year at the helm of the Golden Flushes.

We are the victims of exactly what we used to victimize other teams during the KD years. We are too damn short. We had centers that were 7' and 6'10" We had wings that were 6'7 and 6'8 Now we have a bunch of guys who are D1 guard size. We can not win in the Mac with that.

Trying to compare the way Smith guarded Moses to the way Kostelac did it is apples to oranges. Smith fronted the big guy and knew that he had backside help if they threw it over the top. When Mark was in the game they expected him to play straight man to man. Moses being a much more experienced player did a great job of selling any contact between them and the refs bought it. The refs were much more willing to give Smith the benefit of the doubt due to the size difference. The main reason Smith can be effective in the post is due to his quickness. Mark at 6'11" is never going to be that quick.

Easy explanation. "The previous coach left behind a dumpster fire roster, plus two of my three centers had season-ending injuries. It was so bad, I found a 6'5" kid from the Rec Center to play significant minutes at the PF/C position. It's been proven that 20+ wins can be done at Akron. But as I get my guys in here - and I'm targeting you, so you're one of my guys - we can win 20+ and win games in the NCAA tournament." I'm not worried about losing the streak. I'm focused on building the culture and expectations necessary to take the next step as a program.
