  1. Maryland was the better side tonight. You have to get something going in the box to get the calls to go your way. Hate to lose on a PK but that's soccer. Their defense was very impressive I'm proud of how far this team has come in the past month or so. Don't lose sight of the masterful coaching job by Embrick that got them there.

  2. Man...what a ride this has been. Thanks to a great bunch of young men, thanks to a great coaching staff, thanks to great support from the gameday staff, thanks especially to all the wonderful fans these guys and the program have for making it so special to attend a Zips game, or event. Thanks to UA for doing the right thing and hosting some nice get togethers three different times during the run. Thanks to the Ohio.com and Beacon for allowing Brad Bourneval to submit outstanding reporting on the season and the post-season, and for Marla for some great writing at the end. I'm a HUGE critic, but TennZip has shown me how to be the bigger person and admit when someone does something right, and they definitely improvd from past coverage. And thanks to all on this board who contribute so much to keeping everyone informed of happenings, inside and outside the touch line, for giving good, solid opinions, for agreeing to disagree sometimes, but most of all thanks again to these wonderful young men and Coach Embick, Coppinger and Kolba. Thanks for the ride Gentlemen, I don't want to get off...

  3. Congratulations Maryland Terrapins! 2018 NCAA National Champions! The better team won tonight, which is not always the case in this sport. I would still much rather win undeservedly than to lose while deserving victory. Let's be clear on that point. But Terps were the better side, if not by much. The most important tactic on the night is how Maryland anticipated Akron's passing lanes so uncannily in the middle third. They successfully clogged our possession game. I guess that should be attributed to Coach Sasho Cirovski, who has seen a thing or two in NCAA Soccer. Both PKs awarded were good calls. Colin Biros needs to run through that ball, carrying it on his chest out of the box. Ben Lundt needs to get his hands on that ball as he goes to ground, not try to play it with his feet. Tough breaks, but fair calls. I would argue with the straight red card to Carlo Ritaccio. It was definitely a foul. No doubt the referee's interpretation is that the offensive player had a clear path to goal, and that Ritaccio was last line of defense. That is how the rule reads. I have not the heart to quote chapter and verse right now. Somebody else look it up in the NCAA rule book. I think Ritaccio just as easily could have instead received a yellow card there. I am tremendously proud of our Staff and of our Players. No one in this program should hang their head for more than 24 hours. Spring ball will be here sooner than we think. And 2019 may be an even better season. Go Zips!

  4. Tonight wasn't their night, but nonetheless, a great season. Early in MAC play, I didn't think the Zips would be in the championship game. They came a long way to get there.

  5. Tough game for sure. Credit to Maryland for keeping us off our game the entire 90 minutes. We never got comfortable. Reminded me a lot of the Stanford game last year. Regarding the PK, the first one was unfortunately the right call. You don't have to make contact to the opposing player in order for a high kick to be called. Of course the Maryland player made sure it looked like he was kicked. Also, the red card was probably also the right call. Any time you are the last defender and you deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity that is cause for a direct red. Hats off to the boys for even being in this position. What a great end of the season run.

  6. This is what you get when you make a coaching change. Hopefully the grad assistants are keeping some of the other commitments on the line until the new staff is announced. You make a change like this for the next seven years, not one. So I hope Williams takes his time and get the best candidate. If it lasts into next week, so be it. As long we aren't courting Old Man Winters up in Michigan.

  7. I am very proud of this group of student athletes and their coaches accomplished. Good words below from Coach Embick “We’re hurting now, but we’re hurting because we put ourselves in this situation. A month and a half, two months ago, nobody expected it,” UA coach Jared Embick said. “I told the guys, ‘Sports, the champion gets defined by the trophy, but life’s not like that. Your ability to handle setbacks and push forward and pick yourselves up every time you fall down is more what life’s about.’ Unfortunately, we don’t get the moment we wanted, but this team showed a lot of people about perseverance and how you handle adversity. I was really proud of the coaches and players.”

  8. Here's a quote from the UTC board that made me both laugh and cry. They're getting just an ever-so-brief taste of our daily pain: It is hard to find any media coverage in Ohio about this other than Bowden was fired. Chattanooga news has several stories on Arth but that is about it.

  9. First, the Zips got the benefit of a 50/50 offsides call at the Wake Forest game so I realize that we have to live with the referee's good and bad decisions. However, most penalty kicks are awarded on flagrant fouls in the box that deprive the team of a clear scoring opportunity. The first Pk was on a dangerous play that was barely in the box and it did not deprive Maryland of a clear scoring opportunity. The Maryland player was not injured in any way and clearly sold it. I have seen referees ignore hand balls in the box because they were unintentional and did not deprive the team of a scoring opportunity. Most referees considering this was a national championship game tied at zero and that the PK would decide the outcome of the game would have not awarded a penalty kick. Similarly, the red card was also a questionable call considering it was not a clear breakaway where the Akron player dragged the opposing player from behind. I know this is sour grapes but the ref made 2 questionable calls that helped decide a national championship game.

  10. This was an excellent adventure the UNSEEDED Zips took us on. Remember that West Virginia and Wake Forest were sitting at home! Didn't we lose to Virginia on penalty kicks? Who said it's a cruel sport? (for someone like me fairly new to the soccer thing, a team winning a national championship on a straight shot penalty kick or on a series of penalty kicks is absurd). For me it's back to the real cruelty of the MAC basketball season!

  13. @UA1987 & @zipsoutsider I respect both of your opinions & can see all sides of the argument & that is what this board is about. I have trouble when people start disrespecting others opinions, we had a few last year that made the board difficult to enjoy & the moderator’s handled it, I believe @zipoutsider has taken some of our opinions personally or the firing of Bowden personally like we fired him & saying we live in a fantasy land or not in reality & I’m not a wussy, I’m just saying I have said I have mixed feelings, he has pulled us out of the basement of NCAA football & I appreciate that. I was for keeping him & getting rid of Milwee. What I have heard is Milwee lost the guys & there was issues & disrespect with players that had gotten obvious & disruptive. I say I heard because I did hear that, I’m not in the locker room, meetings or practice so I have not witnessed it & Im always hesitant to say things I’ve heard because I really don’t know if it’s true People have been saying for a long time fire Milwee & get a new OC & he didn’t & it ended up costing him. Now, I’m discussing coaching candidates from here on out. Hoping for the best. We can’t save Bowden so let’s move on. I maybe unrealistic but I do believe we have the ability to be a successful football program. Winning helps make all our issues manageable. We have facilities, good recruiting grounds, we need a coach to get us there & spark some energy in the community & I do believe we can put butts in seats, we may not sell out but I do believe we can put a real 15-25k in the stadium This is just my opinion I’m throwing out there. I loved President Wilson because he was everywhere supporting everything he could. He may have been a terrible President but I thought he was the best I had seen because he was positive & was selling the University all the time. I would like a coach like that. Sell your football program all the time everywhere you go, know your players names & promote promote promote, the University needs to help

  19. Whose best interests? The ADs? I would hope he would make decisions in his best interests. Making a bad decision (which could include doing nothing) would conversely not be in his best interest. (Referring to 03/05's post)

  20. Lance Leopold moved from Wisconsin WhiteWater(the other giant in D-III) to UB in 2015. If I read correctly his record has been 5-7, 2-10, 6-6 and 10-2 regular season. As we know went to the MAC Champ game this year. Point? Could a super successful D-III coach make a successful jump? Appears possible. Probably has more to do with the person and his ability to adapt to a more complex environment than anything else. Still not necessarily the way I would go but,not out of the question.

  21. Wow. You guys really are new to this. No Big Deal. There are fewer rules in soccer than in other sports. Any infraction in one's own Penalty Area will result in a Penalty Kick by the opposition from the "spot" 12 yards from goal. PK is the vernacular. Our guy kicked their guy in the face, while both were in the Penalty Area. That is (understandably) a foul. Colin Biros did not connect much, but it was enough. I have seen exponentially much worse, some really gruesome stuff. And that kind of stuff is what we all want to avoid. Ref could have let this one go, but he didn't. By the letter of the law, it was the correct call for the Ref to make. BTW, dimensions on Penalty Area, Goal Area, Center Circle and actual Goal are some of the only things that have rigorously standardized dimensions. Field length and width have a general range. Wikpedia is all over this one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_area

  24. I’m assuming the penalty was inside the box and from what I understand any penalty in that area warrants a shot from the penalty spot. I’m sure someone can correct me though.

  25. Work prevented me from making it out to Santa Barbara this year...but I have heard from multiple people that George Van Horne,Matt Newhouse and the entire athletic department did first class work in setting up the events at SeaSide on Friday and Sunday....and also the MLS game watching event on Saturday night. I have seen on social media...how appreciative that Maverick and his mom are of the first class, wonderful treatment that they received from George and Matt and the entire athletic department. The athletic department had a tremendously short time to make arrangements for everything and they worked many long hours to make it happen. The soccer program is the best and the fans, players and alumni were treated super this weekend. No department or person is ever perfect....but the athletic department hit it out of the park with the watch events and their handling of all events in Santa Barbara. The athletic department and the soccer team and coaches all covered themselves in glory over the past few weeks.

  26. Great effort by the Zips this year. Putting it together, after all the departures from last years team. More than 200 Div 1 teams in men's college soccer. Only 1 is left standing at the end. In the last 10 years, the Zips winning percentage is the best.

  27. Yes, I definitely won't be as excited if we hire Arth as I was when we signed Bowden or Groce and I imagine that sentiment is mostly felt a crossed this entire board. That being said I really don't care about winning headlines before a coach coaches his first game. I care about where he is able to lead the program. I'll give whoever it is a chance. If I don't like their performance 3-4 years into their tenure, I'll be back here with my pitchfork.

  28. Zeke was always a class act when he was at Akron. Who knows why he left the team. I hope that if he still wants to play professional basketball that he finds the right opportunity. If he decides to hang them up, I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

  29. So the leading candidate LW has zeroed in on is a coach that moved up two levels and took over a 36-16 team over 4 years and turned them into a 9-13 team that finished this year losing 5 of its last 7 games? That warrants a jump to another level? Can we look some more?

  35. https://areyouwatchingthis.com/tv/stations/espn3 I am sure that there are many people around the country watching the game on ESPNU I would hope that ESPNU would cover the trophy presentation. However, they have fla. state vs. Uconn basketball scheduled at 9. as a heads up (if ESPNU cuts away to basketball)....ESPN3 will also broadcast the game and ESPN3 will cover the trophy presentation. Proud of this zips team....no matter what happens tonight....They have had an amazing year to be proud of Sunday, Dec 9 8:00p - Curling - 2018 Home Hardware Canada Cup (Men's Final) 8:00p - Men's College Soccer - Akron vs. Maryland (Final) 10:00p - Men's College Soccer - NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament - Trophy Presentation

  36. I happen to agree with a lot of what Zipsoutsider says. I'm a long time Zips fan of over 30 years (not as loyal as Ron from Canton, however- the most dedicated all sports season ticket holder alum of the University). I thought Bowden should have stayed and more money should have been spent on some better asst. coaching. This and last year's recruiting classes have looked better and the Northwestern game was truly something. By the way, I spent some time with NU's asst. AD before the September game and he was very complimentary of Bowden (the AD sent me a note after our win also). Anyhow, that's all done now, so we have to hope for the best, but I see a lot of oversimplification in this discussion and it seems some do not even read replies, attachments or respond to questions (you 94zipgrad - see my previous question). I have to wonder if LW was not given orders to start an attendance upswing NOW; therefore, he felt compelled to take a drastic action. I hope to heck it works out.

  38. With all the anger you have, I just don't understand how a 4 win team that could not compete in the MAC and was frequently unwatchable gets a full pass from you. I have stated TB did some good things and took over a terrible program. After 7 years, the fact is he wins 40% of his games and only wins about 1 out of 3 against FBS teams. Next year looked like more of the same. Why are you not upset about that? Why are you not upset that we never had a running game, never had a back up QB ready to step in, never had any depth on the offensive line, never recruited well, etc. We all want the Zips to do well and we can disagree about how they need to move forward but you have a level of venom for other Zips fans that should be reserved for PCCC.

  39. I’m just curious, are you really a Zips fan? What is your tie? mine is obvious in my name, I am a 1994 Akron grad. You seem like your just a Bowden fan, your name is Zipoutsider. Like it or not the Zips are in the College Cup National Championship under is helm rather he had anything to do with it or not it goes on resume.T&F doing well, swimming & diving doing well, all on his watch, Groce hire seems pretty strong & he will be better next year when all transfers & his recruits are all in. I dont want any personal info just what brought you here, you are so negative & thought I remember you saying in a post you only had one more year to watch this football program.

  40. It has been about 12 or 13 years since the former UA Ass't AD took my tag line and turned it into a brand name and clothing line. When Akron and Maryland played each other in 2005 or 2006 -- might have been first or second round NCAA game, and I closed a post on this board -- or was it the old Blue Board? -- "Fear the turtle"?? FEAR THE ROO!!!! I want my royalties! And ...

  41. Because he's a football guy and not like any of those other Zips athletic directors. Because he made a great hire in men's BB. Because it appears he made a great hire in women's BB. Because he made a great hire for baseball. He has more football knowledge in the tip of his d*ck than I do. There comes a point at which I've got to trust him.

Quan Easterling flipped to Wisconsin and DeCarleon Townsend flipped to Air Force We should be expecting more de-commits (I’m really keeping my fingers crossed DeeArius Reese doesn't de-commit). I'll post them here and keep the initial Post #1 updated as well. Go Zips!
