  3. ABJ: Chris Livingston, Jonathan King lead Griffins to Division II state semifinal “This is a special time for me,” Buchtel coach Matt Futch said. “I work at the University of Akron, my alma mater, and I am over at Buchtel High School trying to guide our young people where I spent my high school career. This is a special time to be able to put our community in this situation to get behind these guys and now compete for a state title.” I wasn't aware that Big Matt worked at UA. Love keeping guys local & helping shape the community! (E.g., Marques Hayes at East.) Go Zips!

  4. Since 2005 the MAC East has produced 25 out of the 30 MAC finals teams and accounts for 14 out of the past 15 tournament championships.

  7. Is anyone not rooting for BGSU tonight? They have never won the tournament and if they do it puts two MAC teams in. Go Falcons

  8. Let's hope Matt does some lobbying for UA for the Chris Livingston recruitment. Hell of a player!

  10. There was another bad call right before that one on a foul where the defender did nothing except touch a Buffalo player on the back down low. Even the commentators replayed it and indicated it was not a foul. It was a terrible call in the last 2 minutes. I thought it was the same ref we had yesterday.

  11. Take a look at the record from Huger's first 3 years. It wasn't great and there was a regression in his second year. End of last year some of HIS recruits left. Now he has something working. Sure a coach might catch lighting in a bottle like Oats (inheriting and finding some top talent) or Groce (at OU) but for the most part it's a grind. Gotta have some patience.

  12. CMU giving Buffalo all they can handle late in the second half. Personally I'd like to see UB win tonight and then lose tomorrow night. If that happens I don't see how the committee could leave the Bulls out. So even though Akron won't be one of them, I'd like to see the MAC get two bids.

  14. PG: LCJ ??? W: Cheese Toles Roscoe W: Utomi Banks Mikal Dawson P: Reece Sayles P: Williams Riak Redshirt: Ali Ali Hopefully in the next couple months we'll find a good solution for backup PG. Losing Cotton last year after already signing the '19 class hurt. Badly. I think Reece & Williams will make immediate impacts. I list them as starters, but it may take till after Christmas. Toles will have to get his D-1 legs, but if/when he does, he's an all-around, versatile player. A bit less athletic (& confident) than Ivey, but a better shooter. Crossing my fingers that over the summer Banks finds his outside shot. He was a good shooter in JUCO (All-American). I'm hoping Mikal Dawson comes in & is that special freshman everyone always wishes for. As everyone here already knows, he scored 1,000 points at Huntington Prep Post-Grad this year. Idk what the level of competition he faced was, but 1000 points in one year is impressive at any level. We're still going after 6'3 lead G Javohn Garcia of Pickerington Central. He was 1st Team All Central Ohio District Division 1 & averaged over 20 PPG. He could be the solution to backup PG (though true freshmen running the point always make me nervous. Lol). Anyway, My twitter bio makes it pretty clear I'm a Zips fan. I subtweeted (I think that's what it's called) him when he tweeted he'd received an offer to Akron. I said something like, "You'd look great in blue & gold! Go Zips!" like I tweet to a lot of the young guys who pick up basketball & football offers. He started following me on twitter. It's a small sample size, but in my limited experience, that's a pretty good sign that he's strongly considering UA. Go Zips!

  15. Many good, rational thoughts, IMO so far. I took a peak and just realized we finished the season with only 8 scholarship players Utomi, Ivey, Cheese, Banks, Poke, LCJ, Riak, and Roscoe. Williams sitting out, Toles injured, Gueye a waste, Marc transferring, and Sayles injured. I think if we're being fair, that isn't a lot to work with. Sure Groce is partly at fault. I saw the biggest need this year to be back up PG, consistent big man play, and a knock down 3 pt shooter. to create room for others. Do any of our newcomers give us that? I still hold out faith that one of Poke/Sayles/Riak can be at least a solid, consistent 5. It seems like Reece and Xerious can contribute to the inside game as well based on highlights. Williams is also a 3pt threat. Him, Utomi, and LCJ collectively may be able to get the job done in that regard even if we don't have a Kretz or McAdams level shooter. I firmly believe LCJ and Utomi are better than what they shot this season. I'm pretty high on Mikal Dawson and think Ali Ali is in line for a redshirt. I see the core of our team next year being LCJ, Utomi, Cheese, and Williams. LCJ flashed in the OOC and seemed to come along better towards the end of the season. He will always have to deal with his size, but he was also adjusting to "moving up" this year. If he can make smarter decisions and starts to shoot better, which i feel he can, I feel comfortable with him the next 2 seasons. Cheese is an off-ball guard, not a PG 2019-2020: PG: LCJ/?? SG: Cheese/Banks/Roscoe/Toles SF: Utomi/Dawson/Ali Ali (redshirt) PF: Williams/Reece C: Riak/Sayles/Poke It seems clear to me where we can afford to lose someone and where we need to fill a hole. This season probably didn't meet a lot of our expectations. I still feel confident in Groce, but he needs able to get next year's squad to be MAC competitors, barring unforeseen circumstances. We need a true backup PG and i think we're on the right track.

  16. One thing I forgot was the lack of depth. Our point guard really had no backup. They were so thin that after playing strong defense for 35 minutes that I think they were simply gassed late in games. Subtract Ivey, add Williams, Reece and a healthy Sayles and Toles and I think depth is no longer an issue. I'll start a 2019-2020 thread before long to address what to expect from next year in a separate discussion from our dissection of this season.

  17. I was too young for Faust, so I can only grade the 3 Akron coaches I have legitimate experience with - Brookhart & Bowden. 1) Bowden. Restored a program on the verge of becoming a middle-of-the-road FCS team. 2 bowl appearances including the program's only bowl victory. 1 MAC title game appearance. 2) Brookhart. Had the program's only MAC Championship, and delivered it in style. The '05 title game is one of the greatest sports memories I have, especially when my dad wanted to leave and I told him I wanted to watch until the end. However, he won that game with Owens' guys, and proved to be average at best during the rest of his tenure. 3) Owens. Heck of a recruiter - Frye, Blackburn, Hixon, etc. Lackluster results in the end on the field. Frye for Heisman, though!

  18. Negatives - All season the team seemed to fold under pressure. It was pretty apparent the majority of this roster has never experienced playing at the Q. They looked tight from the tip and never settled into the game. Hopefully they learn to play more loose next year - Utomi, Ivey, LCJ all seemed to regress as shooters compared to their prior seasons. LCJ is some what understandable as he was previously playing weaker competition. Hopefully LCJ becomes better next year as he seemed to improve down the stretch. I'm hoping Utomi sliding back into the 3 spot will return him back to being the sharp shooter he was previously. - The C position has been a complete disaster offensively. I'm actually not anti-Riak like some as I think he still provides a net positive when he's on the floor due to his defense. That being said, he needs to be able to catch a pass cleanly and be able to slam it home. Hopefully he sorts that out this offseason. I'd also like to see us add a big that can provide an offensive punch to help provide some versatility to our lineups. Positives - Next year should be a down year for the MAC - Xeyrius Williams I think should be that stretch big that we were desparately missing this year - The defense was phenominal this year. - I think Utomi & Cheese can become 1st or 2nd team All-MAC players next season.

  19. Yep. Gave Buffalo another possession which turned into two free throws. Don't know how the refs missed that.
