  1. Checked in this morning with my good friend who is Head Coach of Heights T & F....says Garvin is a great kid with outstanding potential, and he feels their new coach JR Brimmer will develop even more as a player and person under his leadership in the coming year. JR played at St. Bonnie as well as with the Cavs and Warriors, if you recall. Anyway...all thumbs up by an insider....

  2. Here are some more videos of Gavin Clarke. He will be our next LCJ, but he is listed at 6 foot. He is a pass first point guard able to deliver on target on time. His shot looks to be a work in progress. He is your primary ball handler for sure with tight handles, but he will have to reign in some of his style points because Groce won't except him turning it over being careless. He is athletic and he has that turbo burst to lead a fast break or attack the lane. 3. 20 wins is very doable this year, and they'll be battle-tested early with Louisville and WVU. UMASS will also be a solid game, strictly due to the A10 status - confidence booster if you win. The MAC is wide open this year, but we also need to keep in mind - Groce is a March-first coach. If we don't peak early, don't be surprised. We'll be ready for when the season actually matters. I love the depth of this team. These are Groce's guys. I'm excited. Let's Go Zips!

  5. Wow. Excellent news. The college game is won at the guard position, and from what I just read and saw, this kid will fit in nicely. How nice is it to have a local (NEO) kid staying home? P.S. What position is CG?

  6. 22 days until the opening game. I expect to see a starting lineup of LCJ, Cheese, Banks, X and Riak, with Reece, Roscoe, Tribble and Sayles contributing from the bench. I think we could also see a conventional two guard, one center and two forwards lineup with Reece and X on the floor together with another big as X can play away from the basket and has a decent 3 point shot. I hope Tribble can be effective as the backup point rather than having Cheese there out of necessity. I'm very eager to see this team with hopes it can continue to improve. They went from 14 wins to 17 last year. Here's hoping the improvement continues to a 20 win year. These are all Groce's kids now, so we'd better see the fruits of his recruiting labor.

  7. If he insists on playing in Akron on an annual basis, it would be nice if he'd actually schedule Akron once.

  8. Daniel Strachan has done well wherever he has been asked to play this season. That Captain's armband is a great fit.

  9. D1 OHSAA experience is a lot different than NCAA....slap your own dick....especially if you thought anyone cared on the field the last three games of the 2018 season under what you claim were great coaches....and guess what, the coaches on that field cared less than the players did.

  10. This one will be interesting with former Zips Men's Soccer assistant coach TJ Kolba now an assistant with MSU. MSU brings a 2-6-3 record into their match with the Zips. Last match was a draw with Maryland in East Lansing. The other 2 ties were 0-0 v SIUE and 1-1 v Florida Gulf Coast, both also in East Lansing. Wins include 3-0 at Rutgers and a 2-1 OT win at Wisconsin. Losses include v Washington (0-1), v Cornell (1-2 OT), at Dartmouth (1-2), v Western Michigan (0-1), v Notre Dame (0-1), v Penn St (0-3)

  11. Former Copley star (and injury-prone) RB Weston Bridges is transferring from MSU. Wonder if we have a shot?

  12. My guess would be Combo Guard. And I define a combo guard as a point guard who can be productive off the ball as a shooting guard as well. This year Tyler Cheese will be a combo guard. And I would guess out of necessity LCJ will be a combo guard also. Next year Greg Tribble will likely practice at all guard positions and Gavin Clarke will focus on running the point.

  13. In hindsight, anybody would have been an improvement over the underachieving malcontent whiner Harney. That guy's my second least favorite Zip of all-time, right behind Khadim Gueye (and it's close).

  15. Btw, Gavin Bizeau, who was mentioned in Post #1, has transferred to Toledo. We never did find out what the mass exodus at Duquesne (KD's recruits, mind you) was all about. Screw Duquesne. Go Zips! Go AKRON!

  16. Wow. How unfortunate. At least he can know that he went out on top as he had become a dominant wideout. God bless, Dusty! Forever a Zip!

  17. From the above Instagram post from Dustin “I’m so thankful for the game of football. The places it has taken me, the experiences I have been fortunate enough to be apart of and the people I have been able to meet. It has meant the most to me since I was eight years old. Unfortunately, I have been fighting an uphill battle with ocular migraine through trauma in the past few years of playing the game. It has reached the point where I will be medically disqualified from continuing my football career. The support I have received throughout my life has been truly amazing. I am so thankful for all of it. I will be transitioning into the next stage of my life with all of the tools and knowledge football has equipped me with. To all of my teammates and coaches from the past and the present, THANK YOU. It’s been one hell of a ride.“

  18. No, the wagon wheel is still the trophy for football. The wagon wheel challenge was created a number of years ago as an all sport event.

  19. Couldn't agree more with everyone's assessment of Hernandez and Lue Young. With their contributions to the attack, Akron now looks like Akron. I would also like to add Strachan and Biros to the praise party -- their play have helped Akron control the midfield, something that was sorely lacking before.

  20. I get your disappointment with the current staff, but to call that group of hacks "a great coaching staff of legitimate FBS coaches" is downright delusional.

  21. Lost in yesterday's misery was this^^ bit of good - maybe even great - news! 247 Sports dot com gives Clarke 3-stars Extremely promising scouting report on Garvin from PrepHoops dot com YouTube interview with Euclid coach T.J. Kwasniak - Garvin played at Euclid last year Garvin has length, huge hands & looks explosive, effortlessly dunking in this twitter clip With Garvin and Greg Tribble, we're now seemingly set at PG for the next 5 years. Nice position to be in. Plus, 2021 Zips recruiting target - SG E.J. Farmer - has also transferred to Cleveland Heights, so maybe this gives us an edge in also signing him?

  22. Was at the game. Have been at every home game this season....so far. There are now some obvious patterns. The coaching staff appears not concerned about wins this season. They are playing an 'apparently' injured QB who can no longer make significant plays to help the team win. Missed a wide open receiver in the end zone in the first half. Throwing the ball into the ground on short outs. If he is hurting that badly then sit him. They seem to be running a high school level offense. Lee is not an every down running back, yet the staff keeps playing him. He is so small he gets swallowed up at the line.Reminds me of 'Metcalf up the middle'. The offensive line still can't run block. Riley is a HUGE liability at CB and opponents know they can go there for easy yards. The front 7 is still way below average. If games were at least competitive that would be one thing.. They should be! My concern is Arth is banking on 'his' recruits for a turnaround next season. May be. But,with a new Prez at Buchtel Hall who knows what his attitude is toward major money losing sports. The University is already in the hole financially. He may not want to tolerate that black hole of cash any longer. No more wins on the schedule this season. If Arth is wanting to preserve 'redshirts' we won't see any changes for at least another 2 or 3 weeks. My last game will be Buffalo only because we promised our granddaughter that we would take her to her first live football game. After that I am done for the year. No season tix next year. We will sit in GA for half the price and the same seats on the East side.

  23. Arth is in over his head, which is not his fault, he is a coach who was 9-13 in his ONLY D1 FOOTBALL EXPOSURE EVER at Chattanooga, yet Larry Williams hired him despite Arth having never recruited D1 Athletes. Dating back to last year Arth has now not tasted a win in 350 days. 9 straight losses for D3 Boy at the D1 level. Larry Williams is killing Akron Football and there needs to be a house cleaning at the top of the Athletics Program. Do the right thing Gary Miller and make wholesale changes in Zip Athletics.

  25. KD once explained to me the plight of the mid-majors. If you want to field a team that has a chance to make some noise comprimises have to be made when recruiting players. The P5 schools gobble up all the sure bet players. Some of them may never see the floor, but hey they played for Duke, NC, etc... That leaves guys who have talent but also some baggage that scared away the big schools. Guys like Tree(bad temper), BigDog(weight issues), Harney(weed, attitude), etc... For a mid-major coach to be successful he has to juggle all these guys with problems and find enough other role players to put together a winning team. Sometimes those combinations just don't work out. With the advent of the transfer rules it has made it easy for players and coaches to get a divorce.

  26. Both Larry Nance Jr. and C.J. McCollum wanted to attend UA and KD had scholarships available for neither. Can you believe it? ???
