  1. Ali had a driving left-handed scoop shot in the 2nd half that shows you his potential with his ball handling, length and athleticism. He was forced to take the shot because the shot clock was expiring, but it was gorgeous. He'll be on heck of a player as he gains confidence and maybe a few extra lbs.

  2. How can you not like these guys, this team? Fun's coming faster than I expected....

  3. Regardless of if we keep divisions or go to a single table, certain teams will have an easier schedule and other will have a more challenging one. Personally, I'd rather to continue playing Ohio, Kent, and Buffalo 2x per year even if that means we have a slightly tougher schedule.

  5. Another thing about Ohio WBB: They beat the Buckeyes earlier this season, and they were quick to report that it was their first victory ever over Ohio State! BUT, I was in a rec center gym in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i in (IIRC) 1995 and witnessed the Lady Kittens beat the Bucks team with Katie Smith and Marcy Alberts (Mark Alberts' sister and an all B1G guard) by about double figures, leading the entire way I think. This was early in the season following OSU losing the previous year in the national championship game to the Cheryl Swoopes-led Texas Tech. I tweeted to OU about it, but they continue to report this year's win as the first. The leading scorer for OU off the bench was Barb Grbac, whose brother Elvis QB'ed Michigan and 2 or 3 NFL teams. Over 20 points, and she was averaging low single digits. I think she coaches at Lakewood St Ed's? She and her brother went there. Also, I checked and Marcie Alberts is an assistant coach at IUPU-FW. See old men don't all lose their memories!!!

  8. We are about 2 weeks away from the (Late) National Signing Day. Has anyone heard any news about additional players that the Zips may sign? As I go through the 247 website, there are a lot of potential players in the transfer portal that would look good in an Akron uniform. Also, there are surprisingly many 3+ star players that have yet to sign. The way I see it is that Akron has about 7 scholarships that they can give during this late period, if they find qualified student athletes. Per GOZIPS, they signed 20 players in December, and there is the limit of 25, so my great Akron education tells me that leaves 5 additional players that can sign. Also, last year they signed 23, so that leaves 2 more scholly's for this year, if they had early signees, which they did have several. In addition, with several Zips in the transfer portal, they should have the scholarship numbers. As I look at the roster, there are few talented Juniors and Seniors. I would like to see the Zips sign 7 more Juco's who have talent that can step in and play. This will also allow the youngsters to mature for a year and let those 3 star recruits step in and add depth and play next year. I am looking for any comments to keep Akron football relevant until the spring game.

  9. "Akron (15-4, 5-1) – which was picked in a preseason MAC coaches’ poll to finish fifth in the division, one rung behind Miami – went into the game leading the MAC in overall made 3-point shots, 3-point shooting percentage and free throw shooting percentage. The Zips also were holding opposing teams to MAC’s lowest overall 3-point shooting percentage." Still can't understand how anyone picked Miami to finish better than Akron, considering Akron beat them by 29 points in the tournament last year. But maybe the guys who thought X should be left open from the 3 point line had a vote.

  11. The issue with a 22 game conference schedule is that only leaves 9 OOC games, 3 of which would be some exempt tournament. That means you only have 6 OOC games that you can schedule opponents for. That doesn't really give you much flexibility for scheduling. Not to mention it reduces opportunities for MAC schools to get tournament building wins. The NCAA would need to raise the number of games teams are allowed to play before that becomes a reality.

  12. Maybe not, but an extra trip from Buffalo to DeKalb or Kalamazoo would certainly make a major difference.

  13. The 3 freshman this year - Ali, Tribble, Dawson - all look like they belong in some capacity. Their confidence, game, and ability to process the DI game at DI speed might not all be there yet, but you can see the foundation is solid to build on. It's nice that we have such an upperclassmen-heavy team this year that can help guide and take the pressure off these kids, because the depth they add is nice and necessary. The OOC portion of the schedule is where team chemistry is built and X's & O's are smoothed out, but a team really cuts its teeth during the conference portion and these young players are going to only get better.

  14. Akronzips71 wouldn't want him in an Akron uniform anyways as he's 6'8. That's 2-4 inches below his minimum height threshold for a big.

  18. This team is just shooting the basket amazingly well. You have 4 players, Williams, Banks, LCJ, and Cheese that can score from behind the arc or just about anywhere. I saw Miami play good defense and Akron not able to do anything and LCJ just squares up and hit a deep three. There is nothing you can do about that. We are blowing teams out on the road. Remember last year when we could not win a game on the road. I watch William come around the pick on the inbounds play and square up and shoot a 3. The guy just exudes confidence when he shoots. LCJ is just playing smart basketball. The one thing I have noticed is that in the beginning of the season we pushed the ball down the court and we were always looking to score in transition. Now we push the ball down the court but always work the ball for a good shot. Right now this team is fun to watch!

  25. I was thinking something similar. Hopefully we can maintain/build on the lead. I would like a lineup the last 5 or so minutes of something like Tribble, Dawson, Ali, Reece, and Sayles. Force them to develop!

  31. I like Sayles and Deng a lot. Both guys hustle and play up to their abilities. They are certainly not the only bigs around with less than a stellar touch. Both are competent players and an asset to the Zips. Now this dude had some bad hands yet he adapted quite nicely.

  32. Fearless 2nd half prediction: All players on both teams foul out with several minutes remaining. The 3 overzealous officials decide the outcome with a game of 3 way scuttle. Love the defense so far but the whistles have taken over the game. No flow at all
