  1. What I don't see many people mentioning is that the players themselves want these games against top teams. The players want the chance to prove that they were overlooked and can compete with the big dogs. You think that the players that were on the team a few years ago don't still talk about the time that the refs screwed them from walking into the big house and leaving with a W? It is absolutely a recruiting tool to be able to say to a kid that grew up an OSU fan that we have a game scheduled where they get to play in the horseshoe like they have always dreamed.

  2. Yeah, this really is the key. There needs to be real progress by the end of this season, and we're seeing some flashes of it with Irons. I'd like to see another touchdown drive tonight just to make sure they can go home knowing some progress has been made...but we can't go 0-8 in the MAC again.

  3. This year is likely "long enough" if we only win 1 game. I'm not sure of my thoughts if they were to win something like 2. If I end up being satisfied based on reasonable expectations this year, my expectations next year are bowl eligible or bust, without a doubt. This would give Arth another year to address issues with players and staff, his original class would be in their 4th year in the program. There's been a lot of issues the staff has had to face - some self inflicted, and some out of their control. Taking the long approach and booting a lot of Bowden players/playing their recruits, COVID, way under the scholarship limit, losing the best player on offense, potentially defense (McCall), and the O-line coach unexpectedly this season. I haven’t seen much that makes me think “incompetent” from the coaching staff. Some of the weird head scratching stuff seems to be ref screw ups (based on the games I’ve been to).My biggest head scratcher is some of the personnel decisions, but they’re obviously around the team infinitely more than me.

  4. HOLY EFFING BRUTUS TURDS! TOUCHDOWN AKRON!

  5. The problem is that some of these games are set so far out that it's impossible to know where the opponent, or the Zips, will be once the game get here. Most of the teams you reference though are pretty solid blue blood programs that are at the top from year to year. My other worry is the lack of the funding provided by these games would accelerate the push for a move to FCS or D2. Maybe the answer to that would be to play three games against teams like Vandy, Wake and Rutgers and forego the Bryants of the world. Those games are nearly as worthless on the other end of the spectrum from the OSU and Auburns.

  6. That’s the first touchdown Akron has scored against Ohio State in over 20 years, so that’s cool! Other than that, I saw about what I expected to see. The defense actually made a couple of plays and forced a turnover, I couldn’t believe it. And the TD drive to take the brief lead was a lot of fun. I guess all you can really take away from this is the $1.8M. Oh, and Irons continues to look the part. If he wills us to a couple of MAC wins, he may save Arth’s rear end. He a tough, tough guy and I’m glad he wears the blue & gold. Onto Ohio. If we drop this one, it’s not looking good for Arth. Guthrie won’t put up with 1-11 in year three. No way in hell. Nor should he.

  7. Pitt had an outstanding 2-0 win over Clemson. coming into this week, Clemson was 7-0-0 and 2-0 in ACC. Ranked 2nd in coaches poll Pitt is 15 in RPI Maryland 2 Ohio State 1 5-0-1 Kentucky went to play last night at Marshall 0-0 result after 110 minutes. Kentucky led 5-1 in shots on goal. Marshall did not have a shot on goal in first 100 minutes Marshall is currently 4 in RPI ; Kentucky is 7 Duke improved to 6-1-0 with a 1-0 win over Colin Biros and Syracuse Northern Illinois improved to 8-1-0 with a 1-0 win over Green Bay. NIU strength of schedule must not be great as their RPI is 85. West Virginia (zips next opponent) improved to 6-0-2 with a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure. WVU RPI is 26 Georgia State (a new MAC team) improved to 6-2-0 with 2-1 win over Wofford. GSU rpi is 73 Friday night, Bowling Green improved to 7-1-1 with a 2-1 win over 0-5-2 Canisius. BGSU appears to be the highest rated MAC RPI team at 21 After last night's win, the Zips RPI is 34.

  8. Too many passes bouncing off receivers hands tonight. Are they hearing (top 10) footsteps?

  9. Ohio is 0-4, including a loss to a FCS program. There’s that.

  10. We made one of the Buckeyes quit mid-game, so that's got to count for something, right?

  11. A rivalry is renewed as the 0-4 Ohio Bobcats come to town for Homecoming weekend, fresh off of a 35-6 loss @ Northwestern in which a 55-yard TD run by Ohio's Armani Rogers as the clock expired kept them from being shut out. A familiar name leads the Kitten offensive attack, as former Bobcat QB terror Nathan Rourke's younger brother Kurtis now has the reigns. He leads an offense that puts up just under 14 points per game while the defense has surrenders around 35 a game. They opened the year with a very disappointing 29-9 loss at home to Syracuse, followed by a Gardner-Webbian catastrophic loss to the mighty Duquesne Dukes (not basketball) by a 28-26 final. Former Zip punter Jonah Wieland has been dynamite for the Bobcats. Nobody will ever forget the 37-34 triumph over Ohio in November of 2017. That's Akron's only win over the Bobcats since 2007, which is still mind blowing. Do yourself a favor and do NOT look at the box score from this game in 2019. I care about you, don't do it. The Zips open as 9-point home underdogs. I was quite surprised. That's a lot of points. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see Akron lose 35-10. Hope for the best.....GO ZIPS!

  12. As I sit here, a beleaguered, defeated Zips fan, once again feeling aggravated and deeply embarrassed, I present a common-sense list of schools we should NOT be scheduling at our program's present state. There will, naturally, be year-to-year exceptions to the schools heretofore listed, but this list can function as a simple rule-of-thumb that any normally-functioning adult will understand without explanation. P5 Programs to AVOID: ACC: Clemson Florida State Notre Dame Miami (FL) B1G: Ohio State Michigan Wisconsin Penn State Big 12: Baylor Oklahoma State Texas Oklahoma Pac-12: Oregon USC SEC: Alabama Auburn Florida Georgia LSU Texas A&M To our adult decision makers, this comprises only 20 (less than 30% of P5) schools we have no business scheduling right now. Not difficult. This leaves over 70% of P5 schools from which to choose: 11 ACC schools: Boston College Duke Georgia Tech Louisville North Carolina NC State Pittsburgh Syracuse Virginia Virginia Tech (borderline) Wake Forest 10 B1G schools: Illinois Indiana Iowa (borderline) Maryland Michigan State Minnesota Nebraska Northwestern Purdue Rutgers 10 Big 12 schools: BYU Cincinnati Houston Iowa State Kansas Kansas State TCU Texas Tech UCF West Virginia 10 Pac-12 schools: Arizona Arizona State California UCLA Colorado Oregon State Stanford Utah Washington Washington State 8 SEC schools: Arkansas Kentucky Ole Miss Mississippi State Missouri South Carolina Tennessee (borderline) Vanderbilt Idiots.

  13. Unless you have a mil to donate to the athletic department I wouldn't comment on scheduling. As of now Power 5 payments cover our negligent fan base

  14. @clarkwgriswold, good post. I'm out of reactions for the day. 😕 I like the idea of 3 mid-to-low-tier P5 games. Something... ANYTHING... rather than getting slaughtered by the handful of college football Blue Bloods. Not right now. And not two in one year. Auburn and Ohio State? With this team? Lord.

  15. Read this aloud in my house, and there was complete agreement. Take aways: 1. one more reason to loathe and despise Ohio State. 2. I think that Temple game would have come out differently if say it were next week. But no point rehashing the past. 3. Big, big game next week that will tell the tale. 3:30pm at Info on what looks to be a perfect day for football. 4. I don't have a problem with these pay-out games. Yes, Auburn and Ohio State are brutal choices, and (unlike basketball where there's a chance a top D1 program could lose to the Zips) Power 5 schools should be begging/willing to write big checks to play Akron.

  16. It's the same lazy, idiotic scheduling AD after AD. Now, Tennessee next year at $1M? Find someone who knows what the hell he is doing! I like Irons. He is one tough dude!

  17. Thanks for the response. I appreciate your posts on here so I was curious as to your view. Certainly, this staff has been faced with some unfortunate obstacles. I don't want to reactivate the eternal Bowden/Arth debate but the program had some real issues when he came in and the exodus of players (regardless of the reason) set the program back even further. My concern is that I am not seeing a considerable improvement on the field from the team of two years ago and I don't see the experience on this coaching staff to right the ship. There are position groups that have improved, like the receiving corps, and Irons looks like he could be good, but the on the field results don't seem to be changing. I am afraid that Arth's focus on the culture has resulted in less talented squads and that his unwillingness or inability to use the transfer portal to help through the initial lean years of his tenure have further set back the program. I hope to hell I am wrong. In any event, he's not going anywhere so we're left to hope.

  18. Well said, Grandma. I'm still fuming about this schedule. We need the Vanderbilt's (SEC) and the Purdue's (B1G), Not Auburn and Ohio State. For. Crying. Out. Loud. This was absolutely NOT the year for this sort of schedule. Where was the adult in the room when the imbecilic idea of scheduling both Auburn and Ohio State was tossed out for discussion?

  19. Very sparse but enthusiastic crowd. Zips could not finish. Again. Dyson Clapier's heroic individual effort made the difference. Ryan Kingsford dropping back into midfield (playing the #10) noticeably helped the linkage into offense. But Zips are still not firing on all cylinders. Too many defensive errors! It will likely take an effort better than any yet this season to defeat West Virginia in Morgantown.

  20. I don't get it! The Zips are playing teams that beat the snot out of them for the money the program gets? What about losing their fan base, chasing away top recruits that won't want to play for a losing program, demoralizing players and disillusioning ones that never get into a game not matter how badly the team is losing, risking injuries in these lopsided games... ? Please explain the logic to me.

  21. Then don't throw it out as an excuse for why Arth can't do his job

  22. Seriously. Every coach has had the same challenges. It was his choice to cut lose the Bowden recruits.

  23. Victimizing Arth based on a lack of time of recruiting is BS. At the end of the day Arth flat out can't coach on a D1 level

  25. Good summary of what the staff has been through. Arth getting hired so late as to not sign any recruits till the late signing period his first year (basically getting leftovers; doesn't count), then facing COVID. The team is still incredibly young. I give him this year to finally get his ducks in a row. But next year I want to see a major jump in level of play & bowl eligibility. We won't be a young team next year.
