If basketball games were 39 minutes 58 seconds long, and football games were 58 minutes 59 seconds long, I’d have had a hell of a Tuesday night. Instead…5 points

The link is worth the read because it takes you to a study UofA did on athletics. Some good ideas there and some not so good ides. Let's put this to bed. Pluto is a moron. I can't stand the guy and I know this is going to make this reply go on more than I intend. Unfortunately, Pluto has been a thought leader in NE Ohio for decades now and has helped created some of the most miserable fans in the world. Of course someone can win at Akron!!!! How do I know that? Akron has won. We have won a MAC Championship, been to another MACC game and won a bowl game. I think Faust had a season that is still the highest winning percentage in the D1 era. It is absolutely possible to win at Akron. This whole notion that "if Arth cannot win then who can" is presenting the public with the idea that Akron can't win or worse yet has never won and that is just factually inaccurate. What I would really like to ask Pluto, which would expose the reality of his stupidity, is what about Arth's resume made him think he was a good hire to begin with. Played at St. I?....so what, a lot of people have. Went to JC?....so what, it's a D3 school. Played with Manning at Indy?....so what, he isn't Manning...God knows I wish he was. Coached at JC?....so what, it's a D3 school. Coached at UTC?.....so what, it's an irrelevant FCS program he made worse after going 9-13 in two seasons. Someone help me here. How was this guy ever going to create success at Akron? Don't blame Arth for taking a better job than he had. He is a smart guy who made a smart choice and will be making almost $700k over the next two years for doing nothing if he wants. Our previous AD was an absolute moron. The UofA study is interesting in that some of what I have said is included in it. I love the part about K-12 activities on campus and using those activities to drive people to sporting events. It needs to be more bold though. It can't always be sporting events driving people to activities on campus. If "We Rise Together" is more than just a statement on fundraising letters, everything has to work together. My concern is too much of it does not look towards the future of college athletics, specifically football, and tries to see a different path forward not just for the University, but he MAC and G5 schools. It also focuses on revenue generation. The endless pursuit of more an more money is destroying G5 athletics. For example, another buy game is just more of the same bad thinking that got us all here in the first place. The real problem is they lay out a solution that is ultimately going to lead the program to early season failure that will result in never gaining any momentum for winning and will have another study trying to figure out in 10 years why this study didn't work. . The debt service was something I learned. However, I think if they eliminated the debt tomorrow, I'm not certain much would change. The fact that out of state athletes on scholarship get charged out of state tuition rates to the Athletic Department is moronic and should change. That was a good point it makes.3 points

One of the best things about Zips football is they don't let your hopes get too high before extinguishing them.3 points

It annoyed me how the announcers kept using OSU acclimating new players as an excuse for the game being so close. Like we aren’t doing the same..3 points

Call the ticket office and speak to Adam O'Donnell. He's top notch and will help. I got my regular season GA's as the bargain price of $60 per.2 points

I don't think this team has the same top level of starting talent that the LCJ, Cheese, Banks, Xeyrius team did, but they're deeper. You could see at points Groce used this aggressive style of defense for stretches in year past, but he couldn't maintain it for an entire game as he knew he would tire out the team given the lack of bench depth. I expect to see this same style of defense start to finish every game assuming we stay healthy.2 points

If any football coach for a team they actually cared about went 3-24 regardless if it's high school, college, or pro they would be calling for their head. They want to give Arth more time because they don't care about losing. In fact they expect it. It's that kind of loser mentality that keeps programs down.2 points

Often, next to zero. Big upsets, midweek games, and coaching news will catch their eye. Nothing else. What were they saying in the Temple ass-kicking? Bryant atrocity? Ohio embarrassment? BG win? Miami and Buffalo blowouts? They see the results and come to a very quick and ill-informed conclusion. There are a few media guys who are "Akron guys" and they consider themselves Akron experts and their followers are made up of Ohio State Browns fans who look to them for their UA and MAC takes, when in reality they've seen a few snaps of a few games over decades. The death of the newspaper is hitting mid-majors harder than anyone, and I get it. Their isn't enough interest in UA for the BJ or any other local outlet to properly report on and analyze Akron. In turn, you get blowhards on Twitter going "Man, they shoulda never let that guy go!" The local media was SALIVATING when Akron hired Arth. Quite hilarious. They then killed Akron for being such an embarrassment during the 0-12 season and called Akron football "invisible." Now Akron has two close should-have-been-wins after losing to Buffalo in embarrassing fashion, looking like a high school team. Now we're getting slapped in the face constantly with KEHRES!!!!!!! not because they know he will be a good fit at Akron, but because it's an easy name to suggest as it's the only one they know. That's also how a high school coach's name gets thrown around. That game last night could have just as easily been 59-21 based on the talent gap alone. What did these media guys have to say about WMU beating Kent by 30+? None of them even know that ever happened. WMU is streaky, Akron tends to play hard. There's not much more you can say beyond that. Akron loses that game 9/10 times they play it. Same with the Ball State game and so on. 3-24 speaks for itself, of course they were getting a little better, it was damn near impossible not to. Vegas had the Zips being 27 points worse than WMU for a reason. The point still stands, it was time to move on.2 points

Given the youth of the offense whoever comes in and takes this job should be sitting in a good place from a talent standpoint on that side of the ball if they can convince the players to stay. The defense needs tons of work. We probably should hit the transfer portal hard.2 points

Oppo appraisal: With Liddell on the court Ohio State is a top-25 team. Without him, they're a sub .500 team.2 points

I tried to buy GA football season tickets online prior to the Bryant game and received the same message. I tagged the new AD on Twitter and got no response (I'm sure he had plenty on his plate). Called the ticket office and they just offered to sell me over the phone (and I'm weird about giving my debit card number out over the phone). When i said "no," the suggestion was just to visit the ticket booth prior to the game. TL;DR- I saved a lot of money because of the same issue and no one wanting to correct it.1 point

Sandon Mibut is decidedly not an Akron guy. Perhaps he once lived in Ohio; I do no know. He is most definitely a University of Virginia guy, though he makes an effort toward remaining objective.1 point

PSU downs Michigan in Big Ten semis, 2-0 IU over NWU in the other semi, 1-0 OT Both good results for Akron!1 point

In all of the suck that this current staff has brought us in the last three years, I’m just now reminded of that initial staff, a few of which are still around. I believe 2 were poached from a horrid 2-10 Kent team and then Zagorski doesn’t belong in D1. Don’t get me started on Feeney. Gasser, Rodriguez, and the RB coach who left after a couple weeks for Troy whose name escapes me are the only ones who belonged out of the entire staff. Alex Kline is supposed to be the greatest young football mind in college football and he’s a joke. Anyone around this group from the very early stages could see this was a disaster from the start. Too many arrogant John Carroll guys. D3 and arrogant is not a winning combo.1 point

One name I find very interesting is Mike Tressel, current defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, prior to that he was on the defensive staff at Michigan State. His current boss, Luke Fickell as well as his uncle Jim Tressel have certainly shown him the ropes in Ohio recruiting Anyone have any thoughts on him? Is his name one worth being promoted?1 point

Losing a buzzer beater to Ohio State when 2 defenders leave a guy wide open under the basket. Watching our safeties in football let a receiver run past them to score a winning touchdown in the last minute. Obviously, this is not Zip heaven but must be the other place.1 point

3-24 is going to turn into 3-26 over the next 3 weeks. This is the reality. Arth wasn't building towards anything except at best a 4-5 win season 2 years from now. In reality, recruits would have started to get worse not better. Lots of decent players were going to leave just to have a chance to win the last year or two of their college careers. It's miserable to lose game after game. Arth and his staff have little respect in the high school coaching ranks and a couple more seasons of losing were only going to make that worse resulting in what would look like the end of the Faust era recruits. Arth was on a train to nowhere. I know how bad fans want "the building process" to work, but college football simply isn't designed for slow builds. Slow builds are actually punished. It is designed for quick rebuilds and with the right coaches it can be rewarded. Look no further than Kent and somewhere like Michigan State. Akron is always behind the times.1 point

Had a blast down at the game in the mini Zips section. Unfortunately theY let it slip away at the end.1 point

After the last two games against two very solid MAC teams, I am thinking that letting Arth go may have been a mistake. Every week, the Zips play with the most freshman of any team. They are starting to come around and Arth's vision of a long range rebuild is coming to fruition. They found the QB Gibson (it took Arth much longer than it should have). The RB's are beginning to play well. The OL is coming together when Gray is not playing. They have a couple of very good WR's. On defense, the Line is awful and needs help from the transfer portal (I posted on this in the past), I am thinking of 3 transfers while the youth develop. They need to go to a 4 man front since their 3 is not successful. When Bubba gets back, he and Boateng will make a great pairing at LB. The DB's are young, but are improving. Get a couple from the transfer portal to help next year. The DL made a couple of big plays, like the pick 6. However, they got run over for over 300 yards which is unheard of, and it should have been more. They are awful. I am curious to see how the Zips play to finish the season. If they are competitive, they are setting the stage for the future. I hope Guthrie makes the right choice and the key players stay around. Otherwise, there will be many more bad seasons and the attendance at the stadium will drop to nothing. Go Zips!1 point

Seeing multiple media folk on Twitter say firing Arth was premature, especially how the team has played the last 2 games. Pressures on, Guthrie.1 point

You have to give the Zips credit coming back and coming back. Gibson is playing a great game. That is 2 great games in a row. The offense has life. Can the defense hold again?1 point

Gibson is starting to impress me. Or it might be the moonshine (ran out of beer).1 point

Agreed. Looks like Walton and Freeman both chased the guard. One switched and one didn't. In any event, Ali shouldn't end up on that bruiser down low.1 point

Meh. It was the right call. The bad call to me was the OSU layup with a minute or so left where he pushed Walton out to the FT line before getting the pass down low1 point

A lot of last place finishers have been also. Since we never really know what happens behind closed doors we never know how many at risk kids were helped by a coach who could reach that kid on a level that guided him in the right direction. I'd bet a lot of money every MAC Champion had 2-3 that benefited from a coach like that. When you're holding a trophy above your head, nobody examines this aspect of a team. They are fantastic human interest stories that highlight the way state universities benefit the athletes, students, alumni, fans are general communities where they are.1 point
-
It's also a win for society to take an at risk kid, bring him along and have him graduate. This is partly why we should expect out of taxpayer funded universities. MAC football programs should benefit the athletes, students, alumni, fans and general communities where they are.1 point
