  1. Have no fear, ZipsWin! is here! I always enjoy my ride to BG and then a stop at Frickers...Then I remember that I have to watch a game at the most poorly constructed basketball arena, ever...Not one seat in the house was built at the correct angle or slope, but I digress...ZipsWin baby!

  2. Call it wishful thinking, but it's time for the Zips to put Covid in the rear view mirror and play their best game since Wright State. Zips by 7 points.

  4. Absolutely love Huger, he's got to be one of the most gentle and good people to coach the game of basketball. With that said, that can kind of be his downfall sometimes as he tends to play a set-in-stone rotation to get everyone their playing time. In past years, they've played a big rotation to give the illusion of depth, but they don't have a ton of talent. Through 5 MAC games, Akron has trailed at the half in all of them. That isn't good. Even with the good start on Tuesday, we saw defense allow 44 points in the first half, albeit on a lot of really tough shots. I don't know what to expect tonight. I just want to see classic tough all around Groce basketball with defense that leads to offense. The Zips have the talent advantage, I want the game to look that way for 40 minutes. The Falcons opened at -2.

  5. I noticed that in the final two minutes, Gregg Tribble made the first 3 pointer and grabbed two loose balls which led to his assisting Ali's and Xavier's 3s.

  6. I looked at the stat sheet for the year and a couple of stats surprised me. First, Ali leads the teams in turnovers with 41. Obviously, when he dribbles continuously in the lane without making a move to the basket it often gets stripped or he gets in trouble and throws it away. We have commented how bad Clark has been playing and he has less than half the playing time of Ali and has 21 turnovers so in a way he leads the team in turnovers. Further, Clark is shooting 30% from the field and 24% from three land. Trimble has struggled from 3 and shot 40% last year and 30% this year. The good news is that Ali is hitting 46% from the field and 44% from the 3. For this team to succeed we need Trimble to get out of his shooting slump and for Ali to stop turning the ball over. I hate to say it but I have not seen anything from Clark to make me optimistic that he can contribute. It is so rare to see an athlete go backwards but that seems to be the case.

  7. Our blue and gold colors are fantastic. A fan can buy a piece of merchandise and it will look good with whatever else they are wearing. I prefer the Z logo. If your name is Zips, own it.

  8. The struggling Zips head to Bowling Green Thursday night to face the Falcons. BG is 8-8 overall and 1-4 in the MAC heading into Tuesday night’s game at DeKalb. 6-6 5th year forward Daqwon Plowden leads the Falcons in scoring and rebounding at 16.4 ppg and 7.3 rpg. 6-9 junior forward Joe Reece is second in scoring and rebounding at 11.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Last year, the Zips beat BG at BG and lost to them at the JAR.

  9. i agree. i wonder if the boring, terrible brand of football we've endured over the last few seasons rolled over into the unis as well. youd think if we couldnt play well on saturdays, tuesdays, thursdays, whenever we played, wed at least look good playing bad

  10. solid prediction based on history. Plowden takes over in the last few minutes. Freeman fouls out. First 10-12 minutes Zips shoot 20-22% from the field and 1 of 12 from 3. On a positive note, Zips have won 30 of last 35 meetings. EDIT: Aziz and Freeman get hacked a few times early on and go 1-4 from the charity stripe. (I think that covers it)

  11. i actually like what Oregon does with their Unis. Its unique, keeps people interested and talking about it. yes some have been terrible but the majority have been pretty solid. i wouldnt mind at all if we switched up the styling weekly or every couple weeks. Again, the old saying look good, feel good, play good has more merit than youd think. As for Penn State, they will never change. their brand is synonymous with the white helmet and the blue strip and blue face mask. its a classic clean look and not many schools have the tradition to pull that look off. All that being said i understand your point of it doesnt matter what they wear to you as long as the win in them.

  12. Some people preach not to do the shoe company camps and to just do the College summer camps of schools of your talent level as basically a tryout for your scholarship. Those big shoe company camps cost money to 95% of the kids. The other 5% are free & there film is a no brainer scholarship already & are used to get people to pay so you can get a Nike shirt Also, why should Toledo offer with no offers yet, let’s see what they do now with an offer. I know your all tired of me saying it but this year is extremely different with Covid extra year and new immediate eligibility for transfers

  15. I actually do. Lol. I love the shade of blue & the shade of gold we presently use. There are so many slight variations but we've really hit the nail on the head here, as far as I'm concerned. I also like all of our marks & variety is the spice of life. Except the A-Roo head. I've never liked that thing. 😂

  16. They will get stars if they are getting offers, it happens, he probably never did a shoe company camp to get rated.

  17. I wasn't being a smart ass. The question was sincere; not rhetorical. What don't you like about him? Give some analysis. I think his tape looks really good and he is one of the 2 QB's selected to represent the South in the Ohio D-1-3 North-South All-Star Game. He is however, on the smaller side, so I could see durability being an issue.

  18. Look at my prior posts and review of Akron's opponents regarding stars. The team with the most stars of the recruits typically win the game. Who has more stars in the recruits, OSU, Auburn, etc. They win because of more talent. Then, we will have CK give 5 examples over a 15 year period where stars do not matter. Stars are not 100% accurate, but the trend is there. As I stated in the past, if you cannot play above TBAll level, you do not understand that talent matters in sports. I am out on this post so say whatever you want.

  19. Stars are great but don't put too much emphasis on them. There are a lot of reasons a kid may not be rated. As a coach, are you going to offer a kid based on what someone else thinks of him? No, you will make your own decisions.

  20. Not a very good performance against a tough Buffalo team. Too many lazy passes and easy missed shots. Missing Corcoran hurt, but did change the rotation and Emma Tecca got in and swished her first three point attempt and got another hoop later. Rasheed gave them some good minutes off the bench, too.

  21. Speaking of UA alums, Marcel Boyce Jr. is tearing it up at Buchtel while Maxx Bosley, Jamie's son, is a star at Wadsworth. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/high-school/2022/01/19/maxx-bosley-wadsworth-grizzlies-basketball-jami-bosley-akron-zips-ohio-state-buckeyes/9172216002/

  23. Our current colors are awesome!!! Touch our logo, but don't touch the colors imo!

  24. Surprisingly there aren't as many schools that share our colors. In FBS I can only think of Notre Dame, Navy and FIU. In all D1 there's only about 8-10 schools. When looking at hundreds of schools, only matching a handful is actually pretty unique. There are a TON of blue/yellow schools though. The bright yellow era seemed to just be a fad that fit well with the 90s. Brighter colors, "brush" fonts, etc. Similar to how the Rams and Pitt switched to metallic gold during the early 2000s, but in reverse. Eventually most teams revert back to their original colors. Since the Zips used metallic gold for most of their existence, outside of 1995-2001, I'd say our current colors are here to stay.

  26. That was pretty hilarious. They made such a big deal about it a few weeks prior. But shades of color do actually make a big difference. I LOVE the shades of blue & gold we currently use. I really hope they don't mess with those.

  27. I just went back and watched and the Zips scored 9 points in 28 seconds (2:17 to 1:49). Remarkable.

  28. Tavari Johnson update: Glenbard West Hilltoppers are #1 in Illinois crushing opponents by more than 25 points per game. Glenbard has 4 D1 college commits led by 6-9 forward and Gonzaga commit Braden Huff. In a big 32-team holiday tournament Glenbard was looking forward to playing Bolingbrook in the championship game. But behind Tavari's 28 points his Lyons team upset Bolingbrook. Glenbard overwhelmed Lyons in the championship game as Tavari is the only D1 commit on an otherwise mid-pack HS team. Led by Tavari Lyons is now 16-3 with 2 of those losses to #1 Glenbard West. Lyons is currently ranked #10 in Illinois despite limited talent behind Tavari.

  30. LoyalZIP Transfer Portal Radar™ Advisory: Garvin Clarke Watch: NONE Warning: Wynn This is what I'm feeling now. If Akron doesn't get anything from more than like 3-4 guys a night, March could be ugly especially if it's a cold shooting night like last Friday. Clarke has so much potential. He's a good ball handler and a good passer, sometimes the moment just seems too big for him. He's shown he can shoot well and finish but he's so hit-or-miss. It's strange. I still trust Trimble to take any open three or mid-ranger. I wasn't upset with him last night because he took good shots and made his first 3-ball. Groce managed his minutes well, with the quick turnaround too. Dawson was also much better, and he will be very important over the next few weeks with games just about every other day. Nobody can shoot a right-wing transition three as well as he does, he plays such hard D and can get runs started when there's seemingly no life. Ultimately, this is shaping up to be Ali and X's team. It seems that Groce trusts them the most and they tend to make the biggest plays and show the most leadership. Tribble has quickly risen to being a second tier leader, if you will. Groce was praising him quite a bit for his vocal leadership yesterday late in the second half before the run. He will never be a great 3-point shooter but if he can shoot a percentage around 30% kind of like Cheese did taking a couple open ones per game, I will take it. Would love to see him get back to the line like he was earlier though. He and Ali were on that championship team two years ago and played some meaningful minutes then. I want to see that leadership come out so this group can build up chemistry like that team had. Is it too late? Probably. But at this point, it's just a fight to get to Cleveland. No game against any of the top 8 will be easy. I just want to see a 40-minute game at both ends before anything.

  31. I’m late but isn’t this a UA message board lol are you guys fans or what it got pretty negative and dark in here have some faith in your team they found a way to win. That’s what helps in March, a team that never throws in the towel.

  32. In the post-game, Groce specifically stated that he called the TO at the around 4 minutes just to give the kids some rest as he knew that 5 would be in to finish the game. With Walton bailing, Wynn disappearing and Clarke struggling the depth that was a asset early has disappeared.

  33. #11 and #3 for WMU shot it like Steph and Klay and the Zips still managed to pull it out at the end. Wynn is done for the rest of the season. If anybody else on the bench showed they could help I'm sure Groce would gladly make use of their talents.
