Happy Season Finale day! I cannot say enough how much I’ve enjoyed watching this team play. As frustrating as the results have been most weeks, they’ve looked like a real football team in every single game and I am once again proud to be an Akron Zip. The future has never been brighter! BEAT BUFFALO!!!!6 points

Disappointing way to lose, but the future is insanely bright. Hope the rest of the MAC enjoyed their wins this year. Won’t be the same story in 2023 with another influx of talent.5 points

You have to admit, this game was a perfect summary of the season. We played teams a lot closer than the last few years but always seemed to fumble a win.3 points

With all the mistakes Buffalo is making, this is like watching Akron this year play Akron last year.3 points

I'm so jazzed up for the game today. I have on all Akron gear at work today. The guys in the shop are going to have the radio dialed in while I'm going to watch it from my office. I'm all in so I need the Zips to come up big today. ... or I'm going to have to sneak out the back door when I leave.3 points

I told my wife the first play would be a sack or interception. Sure enough the first play was a sack and the 2nd was an interception. Unfk'ing believable.2 points

Actually they're State University of New York at Buffalo. It should be SUNY at Amherst2 points

Thanks! I need the dialogue on this one; it's like sitting on a psychiatrists couch. Lol. I just wish there was more information coming at us about this one. Anything. Bread crumbs. It's confusing and there has been zero smoke or word on the street about why Akron didn't offer him a scholarship opportunity. Neither did Kent State. I wish there was just something out there as to why, other than just Zero Dark Thirty silence on the subject. It's aggravating to those of us who love to follow both Zips recruiting and local recruiting, and then to have radio silence on the subject when it seems obvious that the Vin Diagram circles are overlapping. 😂2 points

I believe it goes by Academic Progress Rate, but I’m not sure what all goes into that formula. My understanding is that 3 bowl games were still open. NMSU was granted one. Rice has the top Academic Progress rate of the 5 win teams so they also get one. Now it’s down to either Buffalo with a win or UNLV with a Buffalo loss. Assuming all the eligible teams actually accept the bowl invites. If not, then more 5 win teams will be extended invitations.2 points

According to an article from yesterday: Wasel's passing stats going into the championship game are "3,040 yards, 36 touchdowns and four interceptions on 169-of-236 passing."2 points

Well, the 2022 season has come to an end. Lots to say! I think I was expecting more simply because of our hire for head coach and the recruits he managed to get in a short amount of time. However, it dawned on me I didn't factor in much that he was taking over for Arth and that mess. Oh, and the messes before Arth. My excitement blinded me by facts. All in all, based on the play the last few weeks, and with JoeMo having a full offseason to recruit, I feel the future is bright and next season should be an improvement. I'm ready to renew my season tickets again NOW. What are your thoughts on this season, everyone?1 point

Only in Akron could you have a 1st and 10 on the opponent's 35 with 3:15 remaining and turn over the ball twice + give up a TD on a 4th and 10. That's a hell of a 3 minutes and 15 seconds.1 point

South Range’s QB looked pretty decent but I don’t know that he would surpass what we should already have in the QB room. People are raving about Steele Wasel and I watched Dijon Jennings in high school and was pretty impressed with his athleticism. He was a difference maker at Reynoldsburg, there really wasn’t a ton of talent around him and he led them to middle to good seasons in a powerful league full of Power Five prospects. Jaden Ball is the OL at Bloom-Carroll offered by Akron. I think he may fill a need when it comes to run blocking. I didn’t realize he was class of 2024 though.1 point

Was that a Price fumble or Undercuffler trying to pull the ball back to run it himself to the right? SURE looked like he read the defense and was attempting to pull the ball back. That's the fumble-waiting-to-happen I was referring to in my post about not liking that play call.1 point

Every single Achilles heel made its appearance today. Field position, late half TD, untimely sacks in late game situations, Clyde Price fumbling with a chance to easily seal the game. They played well enough to win in almost every MAC game this year. This one sucks man. Absolutely sucks. Bright future though. What a roller coaster ride. Edit: Aginst St. Francis to open the year, they converted a 4th & 10 in OT to survive. In the season finale, the defense fails on 4th & 10 again. Crazy1 point

You rarely get a chance where you see a player who could be flagged for three different infractions on the same play.1 point

Canfield's QB (and I think he plays safety as well) is a senior and is committed to Indiana. Watching the D5 State Championship game and our QB woes, I wouldn't mind giving South Range's QB #17 (Skripac last name?) a chance.1 point

Undercuffler is fine as our "Gary Danielson" or "Don Strock", but I don't see him as our starter. Arm strength and accuracy just aren't there.1 point

I have them muted. Why are they talking about DJI when we are dominating this game?1 point

Hate the screens but understand what they setup for our offense. Get a stop here and tack on.1 point

He wants to tie his teammates and make it 3 receivers with over 800 yds receiving on the year. Good start for him.1 point

Whomever is working the score/downs banner needs to figure out what Blank & Goal is. I thought it was 4th & 2, and he easily got the first down. Had no idea it was 4th and Goal.1 point

Sperling does seem really good, but if there's any silver lining, every other school in the nation besides Buffalo is apparently whiffing on him, not just Akron. I would think there is more to it, but we'll never know for sure most likely. He's the furthest thing from an under the radar prospect winning Mr. Ohio for one of the top programs in the state.1 point

ICYMI, Brian Kelly is a Grade A ass kisser between his southern accent and dance moves like this. Pat McAfee talks constantly about how exhausting it must be for college coaches to maintain the recruitment of top guys, having to jump through hoops like this for 17 year olds. This is what recruiting is at the top level and it's nauseating. Side note, the amount of talent that is suppressed between COVID and the transfer portal is massive. This really should benefit Akron and G5 schools quite well over time.1 point

It should be named Blind Eye Academic Fraud Ratings. Talk about a hilariously BS ranking system. NCAA: "Professor John, how is (Ohio State or Bama Star Player Name) doing in class?" Professor: "Never heard of him. Errmmm... He's great. The student that does his work... I mean he does his own work and does a terrific job."1 point

No idea why the staff did not offer, but it could be a multitude of reasons. Possible he said he wasn’t interested in Akron and did not want to be recruited by the staff. Or a host of other reasons. I had a kid that played QB for me and was being recruited by a number of schools as a TE. LSU came in to visit and I told him to tell the recruiter that he’d play any position they asked. Come to find out, my kid told the recruiter he was only willing to play QB in college and so LSU did not offer. Not saying that happened in Sterling’s case as I’m sure he’ll play RB, but pointing that out because you never know what the conversations were. Or maybe the staff is just flat out whiffing on this one?1 point

Here is the complete rankings with an explanation of how it's calculated. It looks like Michigan State and Auburn are tied for 3rd among 5-7 teams so I assume if Buffalo loses, a bowl will have an option between either team. https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/11/ncaa-academic-progress-rate-football-rankings-1-1301 point

Also, you pretty much have to keep "recruiting" guys on your own roster that you want to keep because if not they may transfer elsewhere.1 point
-
I was also thinking that the portal may necessitate coaching staffs adding an additional coach just to monitor the portal? It seems like the coaches would now need to be keeping tabs on every college player in the nation so that if/when they enter the portal you already know about them & whether or not you're interested so you can quickly offer them a scholarship? Maybe they've already been doing this all along? Idk. But with so many players entering the portal it's flooded and to me seems downright overwhelming.1 point
-
Absolutely. NCAA put the portal windows in place for attempted relief, but recruiting is still happening, just not directly through the player until the window opening. The offshoot to the portal is it has limited spots for high school players. Most schools are now taking only about 1/2 to 2/3 of a class of high school players. I’m blown away by the amount of high school kids still holding out for better offers when they aren’t likely to come.1 point
-
It seems like the portal must be putting a lot more work on football coaching staffs' plates. No more simply recruiting high school kids every year.1 point

If the portal we around 25 years ago, Jason Taylor would have gone to the HOF as a Panther, not a Zip. I love that kids like Jacque-Louis and Whigan get a chance to play as starters before their eligibility expires. But it’s sad to see guys like the St Francis kid bolt the program that gave him a shot when no one else did. I’m sure there are “overlooked “ D3 kids bolting for FCS that offset the FCS kids bolting for G5, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.1 point

They have Club Hockey which, when I was the trainer, drew more fans than probably 3/4 of the sanctioned sports. It was a good time. As far as starting a regular program, it comes down to money. Start out with scholarship money. How many schollys? Where does the money come from? Multiply that by 2 to stay in compliance with Title IX. An alternative is to go Division 3, which has no scholarships, but there are no D3 opponents in Ohio. So your travel expenses are going to be huge. There are some D1 schools (i.e. Ivy League) that don't have scholarships, and a lot of schools that don't have the max. But can you consistently schedule them? Then you need a rink. The club team plays at Center Ice, near Akron Canton Airport. That's another cost. Add in uniforms, practice time, games, a zillion "nickle and dime" expenses nobody thought of. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there are no rich hockey alumni willing to sign checks for all of those expenses. My suggestion, visit the club team. Take in some games. These guys have been playing hockey a big part of their lives, are AU students in good standing, and put on a good show. The league is competitive. I've had a lot more fun at (club) hockey games than I have at most football games I've been to. So their families are paying the bills instead of the university, when the puck drops I seriously doubt you'll notice a difference. 😎 http://www.zipshockey.com/ https://linktr.ee/AkronIceHockey https://www.blastathletics.com/video_links/198761 point
