  1. If there an FBS program that set out to "save money" in their hiring of a coach and proceeded to have success with that coach? None come to my mind.
  2. Whether we like it or not, coaching salaries do reflect market value . . . but in a market that was previously escalating . . . can't wait to see what happens in the next round of negotiations.
  3. Would any of you fine Zips fans be kind enough to help me add an avatar? I'm tired of the plain C. For the record, I want to use a "Fear the Roo" logo because I think it is wonderful. I've clicked around the site and can't see to find out how to do it. Thanks in advance.
  4. Interesting. Make the potential grad transfers pay for setting themselves up? Seriously, I would think that Arth would want guys taking courses in the summer, especially this summer.
  5. The Iowa State game was the last Akron game I attended too! ? This was posted in the CycloneFanatic.com discussion about the Akron cuts. All red on the visiting team side and lots of red on the home team side. Yes, we travel well.
  6. This is tough news for an upper-class student to get in mid-May! Proof that scholarships are one-year deals.
  7. Are you saying that he is the minor league baseball Michael Jordan of predictions?
  8. Not surprised that football was staying, but I am surprised that football didn't take some cuts. If spun better, this could have be done in a manner that made it seem like investment and prioritization of football for which public opinion has been faltering.
  9. "The men’s cross country team, the men’s golf team and the women’s tennis team will be cut, according to the university." We waited, watched, and learned that your "sources" were as suspect as we thought. ?
  10. Not so much a savings for the conference, but a savings for the schools with bad teams. Nothing like capping your season with an expensive trip to get pummeled (one final time) by a top seed. Better for them to move on to next year.
  11. All in all, this seems like it would be a relief to fans who post here. Now, I wonder about the timing of the announcement. The university put itself under a lot of scrutiny and essentially begged the fan base to get all riled up wondering what would come. The football program didn't need casual fans wondering for a week or so about whether it was going to be significantly cut back or eliminated.
  12. It will be interesting to see the reaction in California. By population, they have the most conservatives of any state in the country. If you add in the liberals who like football, we may see a coup. I don't think we have heard the last word from California about sports in the fall. And I don't think they will have the national influence that you suggest. Does anyone in Ohio (or Iowa) care whether they are playing football in California or not?
  13. “We agree with the union that we spend too much money on it," Miller said. "So that’s why Thursday we’re going to announce some fairly substantial cuts in athletics for next year.” Miller says that will mean the elimination of some sports. But he says they are committed to remaining a Division I school. So, which sports are most likely on the cutting block?
  14. I read the post below as a reply to the post above. Very disturbing.
  15. On this, I think everyone would agree . . . particularly if you are included . . . both not knowing what you are talking about and being comedic. Most of us admit it. You don't.
  16. From what I can tell, I doubt you have many contacts who are in current positions of authority. I'm guessing you have a club of retirees who meet (probably still do) for coffee and talk about what it was like in the olden days. These guys all share their opinions based on what they would have done decades ago. Maybe they even are communicating with current stakeholders, but I'll bet it is one-way communication. If you had a reputable source, I have no doubt that you would be flaunting it. I can't imagine any current stakeholder telling you anything lest you out them on this forum.
  17. As a somewhat outside observer, I would encourage some of you to take a deep breath and wait until the actual decisions are made known. You may drive yourself crazy this week with speculation. I know, "easy for you to say." I really feel for you guys. There are no good options. Only levels of bad options.
  18. Has he stated how many millions this would save? Doesn't seem like it would be much, especially if they hire new Associate Deans to help oversee each of the 5 colleges or create new Interdisciplinary Education specialist positions. This only works if you have a net reduction of staff. $65 million is a lot of faculty and staff! I'll hold my breath for you guys in a week or so when he make the announcements related to athletics.
  19. Seems like all the Name/Image/Likeness compensation might just be the beginning. If the financial situation is too bad, it might force colleges to move revenue sports into some sort of professional minor league.
  20. Seems like #1 to 6 have been pretty predictable!
  21. What do you think will happen to teams playing cupcakes with the Playoffs likely to expand significantly (they are going to be hungry for the cash)? Top 1 to 6 teams might want to avoid cupcakes in order to have a stronger OOC record. However, I could see Top 7 to 20 teams wanting more cupcakes so they are more likely to be undefeated or have only one loss.
  22. When we were there 3 years ago, the stadium seemed to be in good shape. In fact, I recall being impressed at its "newness." But what do I know? I drove 16 hours one-way for an Iowa State/Akron game (and tailgate)!
  23. This is an awesome image. One of my all-time favorites in sports.
  24. Hope it doesn't come to the worst you guys are imagining. Go Zips.
