2024 Off-Season CBB Tracker & Discussion

A few years ago (maybe more than a few; COVID really killed all sense of time this past decade), Nevada was branded as Transfer U as they enjoyed outstanding success in March. I would love to see our athletic department and basketball team brand themselves as Commitment U or Loyalty U. We just had 2 excellent players spend their entire 5 year collegiate careers at Akron; another player came back for his 4th year at Akron after a year at a "better" school. That's unheard of in this day and age, and really what people want to see in college athletics. The majority of social media posts aren't a fan of all the movement, and any program that is able to buck that trend would instantly become a fan favorite. Knock on wood, but we have zero players in the portal so far. Imagine being able to pitch that to future recruits/transfer. -

Has nothing to do with strength/conditioning. Has everything to do with an inability to put the ball in the hoop consistently. Vs Ohio in the Semi Finals - 14 or 16 pts in the first half & 50 pts in the second half. Prime example, especially being the 2nd game in 2 days. I mean, hell, we won the MAC Tournament which is 3 games in 3 days. We need shooters/scorers. Period. -
Nearly halftime and they are having their way. Our loss to them was completely respectable. Assuming the MAC/SBC challenge continues and they do the first matchup the same way, we'll play either them or App State next season.

If this is true, Kent will pretty much only be returning Julius Rollins & Hornbeak. Kent's summer school classes are going to include "Which Number is Higher: 61 or 60", "How to Look at the Scoreboard at the End of Games", and "When Not to Foul." These are, of course, HUGE leaps above their typical summer school classes such as "Counting to 3", "ABC's: Sing With Me", and "Our Truth: Drawing Birds with Teeth." Rumor has it Pinky is frantically hitting the portal for any ladies with basketball player boyfriends and coaches who have stud sons/nephews/etc. -
With the unfortunate yet inevitable end for the 2023-24 Zips men's basketball season, we've arrived at the off-season portion of the calendar. The Transfer Portal and TOS Coaching Carousel will be the hot button topics, and I figured it would be good to keep a tracker as the first post on a thread. If you want to become the next Butler/Creighton and elevate yourself out of the MAC, sure. In the meantime, this is simply a coaching staff mission: find some shooters. -
This. Please be "him", Sharron Young.
-
Outside of this Gohlke kid for Oakland, Akron caught the hottest shooting team all day so far. That's a bummer.

This is spot on. And depending on who stays, Akron has a good chance to have the best core returning. -
NIU's 6'11" Center just entered the portal. Coit is still part of the team (for now).
-
Because the guy has a brand built around being a "kid from Akron" but chooses to publicly support Ohio State and a Pittsburgh school. You can have your love affair with "The King". I will gladly stay off that train.
-
It's not hard to tweet "Congrats to Akron on making the tourney." Or maybe LeBum is like Kent and can't tweet the simple stuff (like the final score).

I agree on Prather. The question is does he want to play at this level for the Zips? I hope so, but his lack of usage when we needed scoring was puzzling. -

Lyles is a mystery. He has the body to bang down low but hasn't put it all together yet. The DI game might be a bit fast for him. Tavari, Prather, and Lyles are the likely transfers IMO. However, I'm sure we'll have a surprise or 2. -

The only explanation I can think of is shot turned into $#!@ and the board's censor correction changed $#@! to crap. 😂 -

I'm very bullish on next year. On paper, we have the following... Mikal Dawson - SR - G Shammah Scott - SR - G Nate Johnson - JR - G Tavari Johnson - JR - G Ryan Prather - SO - G Sharron Young - FR - G Eric Mahafey - FR - G Amani Lyles - JR - F Marvin Musiime-Kamali - RFR - F Darrian Baker - RFR - F Rich Brisco - FR - F Admittedly, I know very little about Brisco and Marvin. I'm going to echo an earlier sentiment, though, and say that Sharron Young is a future star. He is potentially Mark Sears/RayJ Dennis caliber. Baker has star potential as well. Dawson needs to find his game again. Scott needs to improve his crap to be a mid-30s for 3P%. Nate Johnson needs to take the next step. Tavari needs to improve everything. Prather needs to figure out whatever will get him on the floor more. The Transfer Portal needs to bring us a true big and a true shooter. Those are my wishes. Based on who we've been connected to this far, we're looking in the direction of a shooter at least. This is a very pivotal off-season to keep the momentum of this program moving forward. I trust Groce and his staff. -
Thank you Freeman and Tribble for spending your entire collegiate careers at Akron. Thank you to Ali for coming back, and thank you to Hunter for choosing Akron.

Creighton is a smarter team. Freeman in foul trouble is off Kalkbrenner to start possessions, and McDermott's game plan is forcing a switch to get Freeman back on Kalkbrenner. Their execution all game has been damn near flawless.
-
The miracle we needed was Creighton being cold. Ali Ali and Freeman each with 4. Oooof.
-
4 fouls on Ali Ali - 2-3 of them because he lost his cool. Whole arena just went nuts when Duquesne won.
-
Creighton is shooting 75% from 3 with 14 minutes to go in the game. Wow.
