depends on the major. And also depends on what you define as an ebook. I could get most of my textbooks through the Ohio Link library system, but I had to be using a laptop or a desktop in order to really be able to use them. Id say the vast majority of gen ed classes are available in ebook format... its the core classes and their textbooks where things might get a bit harder to come by.

been hearing rumors of this for years. I did a pilot test of sorts for them way back when on an Android tablet. If you can get ALL your textbooks that you need on there and they don't charge exuberant amounts of money, all the while restricting how you can even use the digital copy, it'll be a success. There are a lot of positives to be had through the use of tablets in a school environment. The interesting part of how this will shake out is confidentiality of data/information. Since they're loaned, theyre the university's property... but if students are entering logins or other private information onto them, where does the line exist for what the University has control over? iPads, or any new Apple device for that matter, can be remotely locked, wiped clean, or a number of other things without any ability for the person holding the device to intervene... so I am wondering what the agreement works out to be...

If youre a business owner in downtown Akron that relies heavily on foot traffic for your business model, you WANT a hotel so that it increases the number of potential patrons. But yeah youre right... hotels in a downtown environment are a total waste of money and space Im sure people in town for business/conventions/etc will love having to drive 15 minutes out of the city to their hotel and spend their money there. Downtown Akron doesn't need it!

The university had about as much involvement as signing off on what the Aeros wanted to do and providing the logos for the permission. Production of the bobbleheads and marketing of the event was all Aeros. I dont understand why people make a big stink about Tressel bobbleheads, yet theres hardly a peep about LeBron bobbleheads. The former works for us, actually doing positive things to help students in college, the latter infrequently throws the university some money, hosts a training camp there, and otherwise doesnt exist. I have more of a problem with associating ourselves with LeBron, whose only tie to the university its in and their current basketball coach, than a former coach who now works for the university and helps students directly.

Jim Tressel is a relevant name, and a popular one in Ohio... Aeros know they have him a mile away here at UA... so why not promote the university, the aeros, by proxy of a well-recognized and well-liked name? Play off his fame, UA... who cares.

dont forget, pat is wise and all-knowing so he must be right. You are right though... Quaker is pretty quiet. Mostly due in part to the units being in these massive concrete silos with 12" concrete floors. That in and of itself make the rooms mostly sound-proof to adjacent units. Thats not to say you cant make noise because you really can... but your comparison to Honors is fairly accurate. Seriously though, pat... "fire trap"... REALLY? You do realize there are these things called building and fire codes which builders have to adhere to with new construction, right? Generally unlikely for a new building to be a "fire trap", save only for a catastrophic event beyond the scope of anyone's predictions (which itself is not covered by the codes) Having friends who either live in or work for 22 exchange (and thus 401 lofts, etc), I can tell you theyre a little more strict than you give them credit. Its definitely not dorm-like with RAs on duty and on every floor, but its not like a normal apartment complex either. They run those units quite like a tight ship, to be honest. Being next to the tracks really isnt a big deal either. I lived in the exchange st dorms which was only 2 blocks from there, and worked in the CBA Labs which is next to the tracks... Its only loud if you have your windows open. Even then you get used to the noise and it becomes "white noise". Food for thought. In other news, theyre speeding along with the new apartment/retail complex next to the McD's on exchange. Ive also been hearing that the University has slowly been buying up properties south of campus... though thats to be expected with their "grand plan" to completely renovate that area.

Plus, it looks better for both him and the University in the long run if Abreu gets convicted and he had maintained the opinion that "was no sign Abreu will avoid serious punishment". Backtracking on previous opinions that were more "optimistic" than the real outcome are harder to deal with than backtracking on opinions that expected worse to happen.

Im not even going to bother telling you how much of an idiot you are. I do find it comical how much you care about this event, yet publicly state you won't attend it. If you really want to do something productive to help the event, contact the Dean of Students or whomever is in charge of marketing this event and share your thoughts with them. So let me get this straight... youre suggesting that its a travesty Owl City is being brought to UA (not Akron U - I suggest you move out of the 70s) because you believe that they/he (depends on how you look at it since Owl City is technically a one-man-band) represents a catholic and religious message that those who are organizing Springfest at UA are attempting to promote onto the students who will show up? You also suggest that 1) there are ads on the UA Springfest website (which there arent), and 2) that they depict christian and mostly religious messages (which there aren't any to begin with), all in an attempt to promote the christian faith over muslims and jews? Surely you can be serious about this... even a clinically insane person isn't this irrational. I suggest you unplug your computer from the internet, shut off power to your place of residence, and put a tin foil cap on because I think the government is trying to brainwash you.

I dont recall them ever publicizing a vote so there's reason #1 they had so few responses. They sent out a campus wide email about voting for ASG voting, but cant do it for Springfest? Sounds like some piss-poor organization on their part. I gave up on the university ever bringing in quality talent years ago. $20k/yr for a college football athlete would be a heck of an income for a student. I'd be interested to see how paying athletes would affect scholarships, i.e. what ends up being free (classes, room/board, meals)... if a player is getting a full ride AND $20k/yr stipend from the university... wow. I think its due time the players get a cut of the profits everyone else is rolling in. The injury to Kevin Ware over the weekend put a very good light on the subject and reaffirmed my belief that they deserve better.

I think we should scrap the idea of building a new arena and just work a deal out with Quicken Loans Arena to be our full-time home. Think about how central it is to NE Ohio, the major media outlets, and all the downtown activities. Plus, itd help expand UAs footprint on the area. There are so many reasons to do it, I wonder why we havent done it yet!

This thread is out of control. Seriously. Between pat and Spin, Im surprised this hasnt gotten locked by the moderators. If you honestly believe the University would build a basketball arena more than a 5 minute walk outside of campus, you may want to check yourself in to a mental health clinic. Seriously. Why would we build a football stadium on campus after playing 15 minutes (driving) away from campus, then go from having an on-campus basketball facility to one thats just as far away? All things are possible at this point but wow. Even that one just screams stupid. Until the University releases actual plans for a new home for our Zips, all this is speculation and a pipedream. We can talk about it all we want but our voice counts very little to what the University will actually do. At this point, nearly anything modern, designed in the 21st centry will be a vast improvement over what we already have.

I strongly dislike those people. Give our job such a bad rep. There are a lot of us out there who actually know what we're doing. And not getting paid nearly enough as we should for the work we do. in a related topic, this made me laugh when a coworker sent it to me lol

Zeke is in a few of my classes. They offer the 2 year associates, at which point you can continue for another 2 years for the bachelor degree. Needless to say the department is effed in the head and only offer certain classes during certain semesters and at the most inopportune times, so you have to pray you can fit all the classes in you need to take, or take it slower than they want you to (the way I went). My guess is that he wasnt able to take all the classes he needed to get through in the "2 year" time frame, so he's behind like everyone else in this major haha. That and he may have did what I did and started as a Computer Science major before switching to CIS... in which case no credits transferred (unless they were all gen-eds) and you basically lose an entire year.

UA has a small on-campus population, but thats because there are probably twice that number living in residences theyre renting immediately off campus or within a short walking distance of campus. And since they dont live in UA dorms, theyre considered commuters. Its a very flawed statistic when you look at the number of students living within a half mile of the campus.

Spin, see above. This is exactly why your opinion is flawed. The university is going into this project with the premise that the UA Basketball team(s) are the primary tenants of the building and as such do not have the direct necessity for other tenants. Volleyball, etc can and should still be hosted in the JAR (should they keep it as I expect they will). Now, Spin... you keep referencing student use. Have you forgotten about our REC Center which has, if memory serves, 5 basketball courts, two of which are multipurpose and all are used throughout the year? Have you forgotten about all the other fitness equipment and facilities in that building? Is the REC center suddenly insufficient for reasons that nobody has ever mentioned before? There's simply no reason students NEED to be using a basketball arena on any consistent basis. The only possible use from a purely student perspective would be intramural basketball tournaments, but that falls under the "Basketball" category of needs and is very infrequent. What others have brought up, and is a very significant and important detail to consider, is if the facility were to be designed to accommodate other sports/events, would there be sufficient, tangible, and quantifiable demand for such accommodations? The University would be monumentally foolish to design a facility with specific accommodations to a different sport or some kind of event (concerts/monster truck/AMA Supercross) without having some connection to an organizing body with interest in hosting such events there, or even investment money so the proper modifications can be made. Demand for convention space? The Knight center seems to do that well enough and probably offers equal if not more convention space than a basketball arena could offer. Ice Hockey? Akron's is a club team (not backed by the Athletics Dept), so the university has no responsibility for them... and I would seriously doubt there was any desire for a rink outside of that club team. Concerts? They don't need much, if any, additional space than what the basketball arena would offer (shows like TSO would *NOT* be coming to akron anyways - they go to Cleveland). The point is really this... we can sit here and discuss this matter till its beaten to a drinkable pulp. So long as KD has any say in what happens with the new facility, we can guarantee that it'll be built to accommodate his team first. All other events/teams will have to work around his requirements, plain and simple.

I never fully understood why the University would agree to only convert it to a partial residence when they purchased the building. I guess in some way they knew down the road they could cut away public access entirely, but it was not a brilliant idea to mix students with the public. It was kind of awkward how the students/public mingled together like that. In the long run, it'll be better served being a full-student residence.

Spin, I understand your sentiments and frankly if there was a direct need for hockey capabilities in the new facility, I'd agree for its inclusion. As such, there are no direct necessities to the accommodation of hockey so the University won't plan for it. That and if Dambrot has any say in how its built, it'll be basketball first. If the City of Akron were involved somehow with the construction (all but officially ruled out at this point), then I would see hockey capabilities included, but if the University builds this on their own as I get the impression they are intending to do, theyll build it to suit the events they want it to be used for - basketball, basketball, basketball, and anything that can use a basketball-oriented space (concerts, etc). I think what we ALL can agree on is that 99.9% of possible designs the University could come up with will be better than the JAR. want when its built.
