I would imagine it's more about trying to keep the ball rolling and build on their success. If they go out and try to bring in an external candidate, the bulk of their players likely transfer and they have a 'year 0' with a complete rebuild.

Indeed. The logic makes sense, but big gamble for both AD and Dru.

  2. FWIW, Groce had similar situation in year 1 going into year 2. Felt like he was hired later than usual, KD took a lot of the team with him - current players and HS recruits - and Groce was left scrambling to fill scholarships in year 1. Because of that, we had significant turnover going into year 2 as well. Hoping Gensler finds his foundational players. Year 2 may be disappointing again, but in year 3 we should start seeing noticeable improvement if this is going to be a success.

The UMass poster (Steve) who occasionally drops in here mentioned that the UMass collective has different tiers and that entry starts as low as $10/mo. If Akron had something like that, I wouldn't be opposed to contributing. Obviously it doesn't amount to much unless you have several very large donors or thousands of small ones.

    Likewise here on donating!

Getting back to the Zips....  Bad loss anyway you slice it. They didn't complete nearly as well as they did against UCLA last time. Disappointing.

Definitely got away from us in the 2nd half. We could’ve played better overall, but Creighton could’ve beat anyone in the country today. Probably at least an elite 8 team. The luck of the draw of an annual upper tier program and them being on fire isn’t a good combo for anyone, let alone a mid major under dog.

The two teams that pulled off the biggest upsets today had scoring guards lead the way - Oakland (Gohlke, 32) and Duquesne (Grant, 19). When we came close against UCLA. Castaneda led the way with 18. When OU won in 2021, they had Preston and Sears. When Groce's OU teams made their runs, they had DJ Cooper.

You get the point. It's hard to pull off an upset without a guard who can score in bunches and break down a defense.

Thats what made COVID hurt so bad. That was our best chance yet with LCJ (and all the other quality contributors in that team). But agree, killer guards are the way to make noise in the tourney.

I would like to be optimistic but very difficult.  We have played only 1 team that made the tourney, JMU, and look how that turned out.  In 2022 we beat Kent in the final by 20 points and the game was never in doubt.  This year we beat them by one.  (Actually, they help beat themselves)  My only optimism is that Nate and Sammy showed some offense in the final and I think that if Tavari runs the point and Sammy makes some threes we can be competitive.  I also hope they do not double Freeman as I believe he can score on anyone if they do not double.

SDSU, Utah St, and Drake also made the tourney.

The ticket allotment isn't even enough to cover the blue seat down below. Assuming the 550 allotment is accurate. If the game was somewhere like Spokane where it required to to fly, then maybe some tickets would make it to the general public. That's just not going to happen now given the proximity. Ticket prices on Stub Hub aren't unreasonable. It probably helps none of the other 3 schools in Akron's pod are close to Pittsburgh.

Thanks. looks much cheaper than the $400 to get in price I was seeing last night on ticketmaster and seat geek. Maybe I was looking at the whole session price though.

  8. I think I read somewhere on here that someone said priority goes based on your contribution to the Z fund (or the Zips Athletic Club, whatever its called now). You'd think being a season ticket holder would get you some preference regardless of those contributions...However if not, I'm only able to make it to a few games a year anyways. It might make more sense for me to cancel the tickets and just donate that amount directly to the Z fund. At least I'd get a tax deduction..
