  1. expecting more than Walt Offutt? Walt was a leader on the court and in the classroom, as a Bobcat he averaged 11.5pts, 4rebs and 2assts per game. In the 2012 NCAA Tournament he was named to the Midwest Region All Tournament Team, averaging 19.3pts while shooting 62% overall and 58% from 3. Players and coaches credited him with getting the team to focus on playing tough on defense. You'll be lucky if Hester has as big of an impact on his team as Walt did on his.
  2. this could be your Walt Offutt.
  3. minor correction, it would be for a 5th year, not a 6th. side note: I find it amusing that Jaaron Simmons pulls a Dambrot and blames his conference for not achieving his goals while Tony Campbell is willing to postpone a pro career overseas (and possibly in the NBA) for a year for a chance to play one more time in the MAC.
  4. for comparison: when your new coach left a Sweet 16 roster to take a new job he didn't poach a single player. In fact, he even refused to take Caris LeVert with him who had committed to Ohio but was not enrolled yet. LeVert was angry about it, he said he told Groce to call him and he'd sign with Illinois but Groce never called him back. when Jim Christian left not a single player followed him either, but its not because he didn't try, it was because nobody wanted to play for him. lol.
  5. "My grandmother in her 70s cut harder than some of you guys." - John Groce to a group of 10yr olds. lmao.
  6. well this is certainly an interesting development. congrats on the hire. One thing that concerns me about Groce as a non-Akron fan is the loyalty he builds with recruits and players. You might not get a 5 star guy like Tilmon to commit but I wouldn't be surprised to see one or a few of his recruits/players come to Akron in the next couple of years. Perfect example is Walt Offutt. Offutt was a 4 star player in HS that Groce recruited to Ohio State. Offutt had signed his LOI when Groce took the job at OU, Offutt wanted to follow him but Groce, out of respect to Matta, talked him out of it. Couple years later he transferred to OU and was a key player for them. See also: Armon Bassett and Jon Smith. Saul Phillips said today that he sent Groce a text that said "I guess we have to hate each other now. ;)" he went on to say how gracious Groce had been to him and how their wives have become friends. Needless to say, its going to be interesting when the Zips come to Athens next year. I hope Groce becomes the coach that gets you guys all of the at-large bids you could ever want.
  7. Conferences don't earn at-large bids, teams do. Weak OOC schedules are the problem, but we don't want to risk ending our 20 wins/season streak, right? As for trying to blame the commissioner for not speaking out for the MAC to the selection committee- he doesn't have to, Ohio AD Jim Schaus is on the committee. I have no doubt that he will fight passionately for any MAC team that has an at-large worthy resume. No excuses.
  8. I'm not opposed to the Double-Bye format in theory but what killed it was when the MAC went from 16 conference games to 18. At 16 games its even- every team plays all 5 teams in their division twice, and all 6 teams in cross-division once. Adding 2 more games makes it uneven, you get 2 more random cross-division games. In 2014 Ohio and Akron split their head to head series 1-1. They both shared the same division record of (6-4) but Akron(6-2) edged Ohio(5-3) in cross division play. By random scheduling Akron got to play the #12 seed and #6 seed twice and went 4-0, Ohio played those teams once each and went 2-0. On the other end, Ohio had to play the #1 and #2 teams twice and Ohio went 1-3 against them, Akron went 0-2. As a result Akron ended up the #4 seed and Ohio was #5. This slight difference over 18 games resulted in Ohio having to play a campus game on Monday, travel Tuesday, then play another game on Wednesday, just for the chance to play a well rested Akron on Thursday. Ohio lead the Zips for the first 37 minutes and then looked like they ran out of gas. There's an argument for whether the regular season champ or tournament champ should get the auto-bid, but when it comes to the tournament format design, the current design is the best fit.
  9. Trivia Question: When was the decision made to change the format to the Double Bye? Answer: After the 2010 season when the 9 seed beat the 1 seed in the Quarterfinals. Afterwards, fans of the 1 seed complained that it wasn't fair that they didn't get a bigger advantage for winning the regular season. Sound familiar?
  10. Johnson/Campbell's minutes- 2014 Gm1- 10min/5min (Johnson +5) Gm2- 25min/10min (Johnson +15) Akron loss 2015 Gm1- 12min/28min (Johnson -16) Akron loss Gm2- 25min/27min (Johnson -2) 2016 Gm1- 22min/29min (Johnson -7min) Gm2- 22min/39min (Johnson- 17min) You assumed Johnson played at least 10 minutes less in each of those 6 games, your assumption was incorrect. We can all agree that the wins are what both fanbases cares about, but saying Johnson ( I refuse to call another grown man Big Dog) dominated Campbell is simply incorrect.
  11. You are correct, Akron's 8 MACC appearances in 10yrs is the most by any team in a 10yr stretch. Other teams have been close though. MACC appearance in a decade- 8 Akron (2007-2016) 7 Cant St (1999-2008) 6 Ball St (1986-1995) 5 EMU (1988-1997) *EMU won 6 in an 11yr stretch 4 Ohio (2005-2014) MACC wins in a decade- 5 Ball St (5-1) 5 Cant St (5-2) 3 Ohio (3-1) 3 EMU (3-2) 3 Akron (3-5) It says a lot about Akron's consistency when they can lose so many important pieces and still be expected to be on top of an improving MAC.
  12. so the entire basis of the claim that Ohio "isn't even the same league" UNI is the results of the last 2 seasons. lmao. ok, if it makes you feel better. Northwestern, a program that has never been to the dance, is a marquee win? lol, ok. Ohio beat teams from the Big East and A10 but who cares, right? oh, and they also beat NORTHERN IOWA but that doesn't count either. and the funniest of them all- claiming that the reason Xavier won't play in Athens is because Ohio's program isn't good enough for them and not because its an instate program with a 13K seat arena and the fanbase to fill it. (insert laughing emoji x infinity) what a weird, weird obsession you have.
  13. and when people who like to rant for the sake of ranting are asked to explain their position they can't do it. I'll ask again- what unit of measurement are you using to determine that Ohio is "nowhere near Norther Iowa's league"?
  14. what a weird thing to be obsessed about, but ok, I'll play a long. RPI doesn't matter? at all? what about head to head match ups? again, Ohio played them twice in the past 5 seasons and won by double digits both times. let me guess, you dismiss that as a small sample size, or they over looked the Bobcats or...??? Yes, Ohio recently had a 10 win season after getting its 3rd head coach in 4yrs. In the other 4 years of that 5yr period Ohio averaged 25.25 wins/season. So one bad season proves they're no where near UNI's league how? And if I point out that both teams have won a total of 111 games each in the last 5yrs you'll say total wins don't count because their schedule was harder, right? What about tournament play? In the last 5yrs both teams have played in 4 post season tournaments and both teams failed to make a tournament 1 season. Here are their post season results- CBI- Norther Iowa(N/A), Ohio(2-1) CIT- Norther Iowa(3-1), Ohio(2-1) NIT- Norther Iowa(1-1), Ohio(0-1) NCAA- Norther Iowa(2-2), Ohio(2-1) that puts UNI out of OU's league? really? if its not RPI, and its not head to head results, and its not overall record, then what is this magical unit of measure to say that UNI is not only better than OU, but they aren't even in the same league? Why the hyperbole?
  15. Ohio has played UNI twice in the past 5yrs and beat them by double digits both times. A comparison of RPIs over the last 5yrs has OU over UNI three out of the five- UNI/OU 70/81 14/232 111/86 83/67 72/45 "no where near North Iowa's league" is a bit of a stretch.
  16. Attendance for Akron home games in 2014- 13,357 v Marshall. 9/20, Saturday 10,348 v BGSU. 11/04, Tuesday 9,104 v Howard. 8/28, Thursday 8,416 v EMU. 10/04, Saturday (Homecoming) 8,223 v Miami. 10/11, Saturday 5,571 v UMass. 11/18, Tuesday 9,998- Avg. Attendance Saturday 8,341- Avg. Attendance non-Saturday 9,170- Avg Attendance overall Bottom line: Weeknight games are not the problem. As for TV exposure's impact on recruiting, since weeknight MAC began ramping up in 2007 the teams that have played the most weeknight games are NIU, Ohio, and Toledo, they also happen to be the top 3 in winning percentage over that frame. Coincidence? Maybe. or maybe not.
  17. for those that think 42 bowls is too many- 14 bowls have been added in the last 10 years, 21 of the 28 new bowl spots go to G5 teams. The real problem isn't the total number of bowls its the total number of guaranteed bowl spots for the P5. 9 out of 14 teams in a conference should not be guaranteed a bowl game but that is the average for the P5. The P5 are to blame for the gluttony of bowls.
  18. Bowling Green is being absolutely dismantled right now. If reports from Verbal Commits and ESPN are true there are currently 7 scholarship players from last year's squad that are transferring out. Add that to the 3 that graduated and that leaves just 3 returning players, one of which took a redshirt last year as a freshman and has yet to play in a college game. The only 2 returning players with any college experience are a senior PG that avg 4.2pts/gm last year and a sophomore F that avg 0.7pts/gm off the bench. BG had 4 commits for next year but one of them, a JUCO, has asked for a release, bring the number down to 3. That leaves as many as 7 scholarships open. It should be noted that not all of these transfers have been officially announced yet but I have yet to see anyone deny them either. Its a shame, I though BG had turned the corner this last season.
  19. Gary Trent and the Bobcats won the preseason NIT in 1994, it was good exposure. How's this for a tournament lineup- @Ohio State, @#14 Virginia, then George Washington and New Mexico State @MSG in NYC. Side note- the rest of Ohio OOC that year was @Kentucky(L), @UC-Irvine(W), @Iowa(L), Wright State(W), @Xavier(L), West Virginia(W), and Duquesne(W). Heck of a lineup. Looks like a great opportunity for the Zips next year. I think the MAC in on the verge of having a team earn an at-large bid and a strong OOC schedule is a crucial. Good luck.
  20. The #2 team in the MAC this year, actually the #1 team of the regular season, didn't deserve. At-large bids are given to teams, not conferences. The conference plays a factor in that it either provides enough competition to justify an at-large or it doesn't. The MAC is strong enough to justify another bid, but not for a team that finishes 12-6 in conference and only plays 1 non conference team with an RPI better than 274.
  21. In spite of being in a conference with a greater chance at earning an at-large bid Arizona State still has fewer total NCAA Tournament appearances than schools like Weber State and Murray State. Compared to the MAC they would be tied for 2nd. ASU has the same number of tournament appearances in the last 20yrs as Akron, Miami and Ohio. The path to sustained success will not be easier for Hurley in Tempe.
  22. It won't take years for OU to recover, they'll be much more competitive next year, I expect UB to experience some challenges next year though. I'm surprised Buffalo didn't follow Ohio's model and hire up after Hurley's departure and go for a head coach with experience for top MAC money that they may not have been able to attract 2 years ago. Hiring the top assistant is the safe move for the short term but I thought their AD would be more ambitious.
  23. Bids are given to teams, not leagues, so for a MAC team to earn an at-large bid they have to play both a strong conference and strong non conference schedule. The MAC asa whole was good enough this year to give a team a respectable conference schedule, the reason the MAC's regular season champ and tournament runner up (CMU) didn't earn an auto bid wasn't because they didn't have a strong enough conference schedule it was because they only played one non conference game vs an opponent with a RPI better than 274. And that one opponent finished 15-17! CMU's chances of an at-large were over before the season began. As a conference we have to improve in our non conference scheduling if we ever hope to see multi-bids again. So how does UMass fit into that? Its true that splitting the money 13 ways is less than splitting it 12 ways but the payoff comes either directly by UMass earning an at-large bid themselves or indirectly by them giving the other teams in the MAC another solid opponent to build an at-large worthy resume on. I don't see any upside in the future to adding their football program. The last two schools the MAC added full time haven't provided much upside for football either, no offense. Like Akron and Buffalo, UMass would provide value to the conference in other ways.
  24. Not exactly. The winning percentages I listed are for the entire history of each program, UMass started playing basketball in 1900 but has only been in the A10 since its founding in 1976. Prior to the A10 UMass was in the Yankee Conference from '46-'76. Same for Akron, that percentage includes all of the pre-MAC games. I'm not sure you can say UMass would have won our league most years because if they were in the MAC they would have had MAC level players/coaches/resources, just like the rest of us. UMass's history shows that when you compare them to a league of their peers they do not win that league most of the time. Outside of that magic run from '92'96 UMass has never won an A10 conference tournament and has been co-champ of the regular season just one time. I understand why UMass doesn't want to leave the A10 and join the MAC, they'd rather be one of the worse teams in a great league than one of the better teams in a good league, can't say I blame them. But, if they are committed to playing big league football they are going to have to make some sacrifices.
  25. UMass grossly over estimates their attractiveness to the AAC. I think the demographics of their school (size, academics, revenue, etc) make them a natural fit in the MAC and I think their BBall team would be a nice addition , but I don't think it would be a game changer. UMass had a 5 year run from 1992-1996 that any MAC team would kill for- 2 rounds of 32, 1 Sweet 16, 1 Elite 8, and 1 Final 4. Amazing. (of course the Final 4 run doesn't officially count because those wins were vacated, but let's not dwell on that embarrassing detail.) But here's the thing, outside of that 5 year stretch where UMass won 11* tournament games they haven't won a single tournament game before or since. Not one. Before 1992 UMass only had 1 tournament appearance in 1962. After the Final 4 run in '96 they made it back in '97 and '98 but lost in the first round both times. In spite of being in a conference that annually earns multiple bids their at-large bid in 2014 is their only appearance since 1998. Their 9 appearances would rank them 3rd in the MAC behind Ohio and Miami. This year they would be 3rd in attendance behind Ohio and Toledo. Here's how UMass stacks up historically in regards to program all time winning % compared to the rest of the MAC (through 2014)- .609 Akron (1,503-966) .574 Ohio (1,450-1,077) .571 Toledo (1,354-1,016) .542 Miami (1,313-1,108) .540 BGSU (1,300-1107) .532 UMass (1,222-1,074) .529 WMU (1,262-1,123) .519 Ball St (1,148-1,063) .506 Buffalo (1,089-1,062) .506 CMU (1,214-1,184) .492 Can't St (1,138-1,171) .492 NIU (1,185-1,222) .491 EMU (1,155-1,197) UMass is an above average MAC team, nothing more.
