  1. How about if you were told about JuCo and other committments you had no hand in picking, evaluating, recruiting, and were told who on the current staff you had to retain? Wouldn't common sense tell you if that's the case then the 2 year plan needs to be extended? Just saying. I really don't want to pick this apart, Paul's still dealing with quite a bit of emotion from quite a few things, but as I said before, he wasn't offered a great deal and said, "That's a great deal, no thanks." If Akron wanted him they should have been willing to match the WSU offer, they didn't. I'm signing off before any more points need counterpoints. I agree Paul's not 100% blameless, he probably should have been better prepared for the insults. Someone else posted on another thread how TW should start off with an apology... not so much. It couldn't have been a comfortable, friendly, safe exchange. Who would want to come to work (and do THAT job) in an atmosphere like that without some level of safety equal to what he would be leaving?
  2. Since this post is about trust, I'm going to go out on a limb and trust every word of WNN's post is good. Thanks for the effort. I left only these three parts in for a reason. It's one thing to not trust someone and still be able to negotiate a contract, as the contract is a form of protection. Paul could have done some negotiating, yet he decided not to. Goes directly to trust and the belief TW is someone he can't trust. I can't speak to what negotiating did or did not take place, I don't know who ended the conversation, I'm sharing what was shared with me. Certainly not everything that took place was shared with me, nor was everything shared with me shared with you. GP1, I'm not trying to knock what you've said, I just take exception to 'yet he decided not to.' Again, I'm not certain how it all shook out. For the record, Paul doesn't have an agent or a lawyer on retainer, he's never needed one.
  3. You can't include such a clause in this Zips' contract. The aforementioned Jesus isn't going to be sniffing .500 at UA for at least 3 seasons. No more banking on "mulligans," hire a good coach!! I agree 100% that you shouldn't, in this particular case especially. But I've heard some talk that such a clause was part of the contract offered to PW. I sure hope not, or we'll never get a decent coach in here. I, too, believe this to have been the case. After confirming there was no confidentially agreement in place, I’m going to throw out part of a text from Paul, “…Bad contract, two years review and possible reassignment and reduction in pay….” (Reassignment could have come at any time, not after 2 years, and with no cause.) Plus, get this, TW came to Detroit alone! Paul doesn’t trust him. TW blew it in many, many ways. I can’t imagine anyone in Paul’s position accepting that offer. Someone somewhere mentioned TW going to Detroit with some lame offer to say he did. Akron couldn’t match WSU offer, stability through 2016 being a primary component. It was a no-brainer, but a very sad loss for the university and the city.

  5. I’m stunned, for certain. I wasn’t in the room but I can’t imagine Paul getting a great offer and saying, “That’s a great offer, no thanks.” So I conclude there wasn’t an offer made that was good enough to lure him out of a comfortable situation. I’ve been thinking his options were Akron or Wayne, but who knows, in 12 months there may be another couple dozen openings better suited for him. I can see Paul feeling a certain obligation to his school, but not this athletic department. Who knows, there may be a time when Akron & Paul’s needs align. Hopefully the faithful here won’t hold this against him, he wasn’t involved in the hype & excitement of this site; he didn’t snub you. I however, did participate to feed and feed off the excitement of his possible hire. I really wanted to enjoy UA football again. But without the PW buzz, I don’t think this will be as fun. Take care all.
  6. Re: Paul Winters Doesn’t Want to Win at Akron: (have you read any other posts?) Winning and dynasty are not the goals; he’ll have to settle for DOMINANCE. I recall seeing that word once on Zip Nation since this frenzy began (and after further review, not in a good way.) Paul will be relentless until his Zips are the dominant force in whatever conference they play. No other coach will ever out-work or out-prepare Coach Winters, it simply will not happen in his lifetime as a coach, it’s inconceivable. Secondly: Paul has never left NE Ohio. Do you believe in your wildest dreams any of the coaches for whom he worked pulled him off his turf? That didn’t happen. I have no clue if Paul will get the call from The University of Akron, but I do know nobody would do it better.
  7. Mission accomplished, except for one glaring mistake that we may be able to (hopefully) laugh about someday.
  8. IMHO I would let "last time" go - I can see reasons why each side, the UofA and PW were not ready for each other. I don't think you'll get a more honest answer than that, no matter who you ask. Things happen, people change, what's right now may not have fit then. This should be the time; this should be the call: "WINTERS IN FALL!"
  9. I knew Paul Winters when he was a young coach and he never talked about winning; winning wasn’t the goal – establishing a DYNASTY was the dream (well, sorry, that implies generations, his son isn’t going to coach and Paul doesn’t want his daughters near his players, so let’s re-group… one dream ended.) Winning and dynasty are not the goals; he’ll have to settle for DOMINANCE. I recall seeing that word once on Zip Nation since this frenzy began. Hmmm. Paul will be relentless until his Zips are the dominant force in whatever conference they play. He wants the competition to come into his house believing they’re going to be the ones to finally topple the evil Zip Empire, and then whimper away. Said another way, no other coach will ever out-work or out-prepare Coach Winters, it simply will not happen in his lifetime as a coach, it’s inconceivable. Secondly: Paul has never left NE Ohio. While working at Akron, Toledo, Wisconsin, Akron, and Wayne State – where do any of you think he was recruiting? Do you believe in your wildest dreams any of the coaches for whom he worked pulled him off his turf? That didn’t happen. He can walk into any high school in a 3-5 state region and be welcomed as a friend (yes, even Stark County, i.e. Jeff Durbin.) He’s very well respected all around. That said, believe, too that he knows every other coach on the beat. He has very good friends at all levels of college coaching. Can none of you imagine him feeding a bigger school: “Hey, just saw this guy, he’s your caliber of player, don’t want you to miss.” By the same token, picture Paul never getting a call: “Hey, I was just up at XYZ-HS – we don’t have a fit for Joe Schmoe but I bet you could use him, just wanted you to know.” If Paul’s the hire at UofA, he’s not going to skip a beat. With all respect to Wayne State & his efforts there, he’s been recruiting (evaluating talent) for Akron (if only in his mind) for decades. More recruiting – this time being recruited by… does anybody recall how Paul got to Wisconsin? Does the name Russ Jacques mean anything to anybody? Russ & Paul recruited the same area. When Russ got the call for OC at Wisconsin under bAlvarez, he requested bA hire Paul, which eventually happened. barry fired PW after his 2nd season I believe. Does anyone know what happened next? He was hired by the Vice Chancellor of Legal Affairs as Assistant Athletic Director in charge of (wait for it…) NCAA Compliance. Why do so few people ever acknowledge Paul’s work at Wisconsin? He HATED being in the stands for the Rose Bowl, but because bA thought he wasn’t physical enough with his backs, bA moved in a different direction (read: Paul wasn’t a guy to humiliate his players by physically jerking a face-mask (although I’ve seen him control the direction in which a player is able to look) or actually kicking them in the pants (picture any number of coaches [or The 3 Stooges] 30 years ago, hopefully we’ve evolved without losing an edge.) I have no clue if Paul will get the call from The University of Akron, but I do know nobody would do it better.
  10. Can't do it - must not get in a p-ing contest with ZtZ for my first post - except maybe to say all of 'this' began 12/18/85, when Dennison's staff was fired - 26 years from this coming Sunday. Until that time there was a certain comfort level with UA football; since then we've been trying to recapture that, plus more. Not sure exactly what he means about a 'dead period' although I know what each of those words mean. I'm not the least bit concerned about the incoming recruiting class, and I'll share why when I'm ready. For now I'm just happy to have ZtZ to play with. Gerry wasn't on board until this time of the season; maybe, just maybe ADs and HCs know a little bit more than our little fan base. and here we go...
