  1. RowdyZip...I think the Ohio legislature would just be approving of the proposal being placed on the ballot sometime next year.Ryno... That is true that if we ask for private funds in a different year than the soccer stadium, then companies could have a new budget to work with that year. But I would still be skeptical about whether they would allocate funds twice, to two different sports facilities, in the same county.I REALLY HOPE that I am wrong. We need a stadium badly. I just wonder how private companies will react to being asked for money for two large sports facilities in Summit County. Again, as I've said before, I really hope that everyone eventually sees that the logical answer is to build a new Akron football stadium, and allow a soccer team to use it. I just don't see a 25,000 seat indoor soccer stadium being a very good idea.
  2. Let's just hope that nobody ever posts KD's commercial for the Teddy Bear Toss on U-Tube. I was at the game Saturday, and saw it on the big screen. I LOVE the guy, but the way he was reading the que card looked awful. Ok, I'll stop right there before I get on my soap box again about the amateurish nature of our athletic department's marketing efforts.
  3. Bobbyake. I know. The people (smokers and non-smokers) will still need to vote on it. But let me correct you on one item. When Cuyahoga County initiated a cigarette tax, I believe that applied to ANY tobacco product. K-Roo. I agree with you. I don't care that the people at Akron are claiming that the Soccer stadium has no impact on our stadium. If both projects need any kind of private support, and the soccer stadium is built first, it would HAVE to impact our ability to get private support.
  4. I've commented enough on this subject already, so I will spare everyone. But, now that I have seen this new article, I have one question....Does anyone think that any smoker in Summit County is willing to pay 30 cents more per pack to fund an indoor SOCCER stadium????????
  5. RowdyZip. Correct me if you find out differently, but I believe that most of those lower reserved sections now have a "minimum $500 donation to the Z-Fund" attached to them. That is just to have the right to buy those tickets. The ticket price is above and beyond that.I think that amount might be lower for the sections at the ends of both of those main lower sections. But I don't think you can buy any lower reserved tickets without some sort of donation, plus the actual season ticket price. Can anyone else shed some light on this?
  6. skhorbotly. You're right. There are far too many people in the other sections sitting on their hands. The only time they stand is during the National Anthem, and before the first basket (a very old Akron tradition). Frankly, I'd like to see MORE students in the lower sections. The idea posted on here to put the students right behind the visitor's bench is GREAT idea. Here's the problem. The big donors get the best seats, whether they are there to talk business with a client, eat dinner, or (more often than not) not show up at all. And with the JAR being as small as it is, and those priority seats not being all that plentiful, I don't see the administration changing that policy. It's a shame. The team could use the support of more people like yourself. That's probably what is needed to wake up the rest of the crowd.
  7. Why can't a normal student sit in the lower section behind the baskets if someone else is not in that seat?? And why does someone have to have a particular uniform? It's all very petty. I've been around this program for over 20 years, and I've seen just about everything. The goal is simple...HELP THE ZIPS WIN GAMES. And to do this, we need people down there that will help us WIN GAMES, whether they are dressed in Hawaiian Shirts or Blue or Gold or shirtless....I DON'T CARE !! I'm sure the original idea was to have both of these sections full of fans that were all dressed alike. But, eliminating a student from one of these seats behind the basket, when it's EMPTY, is only hurting OURSELVES !!It's a simple question.....which is a greater benefit to the Zips....having a student sitting in the seat?.....or leaving the seat empty?
  8. Let me add one thing as an Akron alum from over 20 years ago.We never had an organized student cheering section, so I applaud all of you. I was at the WSSU game, and loved what you guys were doing. Even thought I am in my 40's.. I WANTED TO BE DOWN THERE WITH YOU GUYS !! (my wife objected). The problem was that there were so many empty seats in your two sections. Which begs the question...Why would ANYONE be turned away if the sections were going to have any empty seats? If this is happening....you only hurt the team and the image of the school.
  9. GP1...Thanks for adding your professional expertise as well.Someone mentioned about how the "Fear The Roo" campaign may be communicating an "old" message. This might be true. But what concerns me more is that it is not being used in the correct context. The music on both the basketball and football commercials sounds "cartoonish", which is not what "Fear The Roo" is supposed to convey. And in the basketball commercial, it asks us to come out and attend the games and Fear The Roo, as if we are the opponent. Yes, we do need to utilize every opportunity we have to "sell" Akron athletics to the community. But with marketing material like this to support the sales efforts, we're fighting a very tough fight.
  10. I've commented on some of this before. I am a sales and marketing executive with over 15 years of experience. Not only are the marketing efforts lacking in terms of volume, but they are also lacking it terms of the message. "Fear The Roo" is what our OPPONENTS are supposed to do, not us (Re: Basketball Radio Commercial). Plus, all of the print marketing in the newspapers lack the principles that most professionals follow that know how to create good marketing material. I hate to say this, but look at Can't's "On The Hunt" campaign. It incorporates some very effective messages. When athletic administrators come in from out of town, and bring others from out of town with them, they often lack the knowledge of the city, the fans, and the school to produce effective marketing material. Plus, oftentimes these people never held any kind of high-level marketing position prior to being assigned somewhere as an athletic administrator in charge of marketing. And the people at the top may never realize that this is such an important investment to make if you are going to attract more fans.Sure, they might be investing more dollars in marketing efforts. But if a campaign stinks, it's not going to have an effect on the target market...no matter how much you invest into it.
  11. Buffalo even had a few chances to win or tie that game in the final moments. That would have added some serious respect to our conference. It appears that we need to take a closer look at the teams we schedule during the non-conference part of our schedule. If Dambrot is making it hard to get big-name teams on our schedule, then that is going to affect our strength of schedule, and ultimately our chances of an at-large bid if we do not win the MAC.I admire that he holds out for 1:1 matchups. But if a 2:1 is all you can get, we need to take it. Personally, I'd rather lose a couple more games, and have a chance at an RPI high enough to get an at-large, as opposed to relying solely on a conference tournament title. Giving us two chances to make the tournament just makes better sense.
  12. Zips Fan. I agree. There's a much larger gap between an average 1-A and the best 1-AA than there used to be.
  13. It's becoming more and more evident to me that we need to win the MAC to get into the tournament. I don't think that the Nevada game (unless we win it) and a MAC schedule will get us enough quality opponents to warrant an at-large bid. Especially since Oral Roberts and Loyola Marymount don't appear to be as good as we first thought. Win the MAC, or win at least 25 games. I don't see any other possibilities with teams like Tiffin, Winston Salem and Binghamton on our schedule. Prediction: Akron needs to win this one by 50 to get us much out of playing this "unquality opponent" as possible.
  14. I will add one more thing to Akron becoming 1-A.Akron apparently had wanted to join the MAC for decades, and only became 1A as a Independent because MAC membership was not going to happen at the time. I believe that Can't was always very much against us joining (which could have been for the same reasons that YSU got blocked).Bill Muse felt that we should give it a try as an Independent. However, when he left a few years later, the next administration was able to finally break through and get us into the MAC.Gerry Faust was indeed against being in the MAC. He says it in his book. And remember, at the time, the MAC was not at the level that it is today. Even during the early D1 Independent years when Faust was just starting to build the program, and the NCAA was still limiting our scholarships, we were already having great success against MAC teams. I know that I felt that we'd have a more difficult time recruiting as a MAC member than as a Major Independent. But, the MAC has improved over the years, and I don't feel that way anymore.
  15. I agree Captain. Getsy would not have lost his starting job this year. But thinking about having a guy like LeFevour as a starter for the next three years seemed close to a reality.I'm hearing that Hakes is the guy the coaches are expecting to be the next starter. Is anyone else hearing anything?
  16. Wait a second guys. The mayor showed up at the Rubber Bowl a couple of years ago to give Charlie Frye's parents a Key To The City. When it involves free publicity, politicians ALWAYS show up.
  17. Truth is...Brookhart probably would have been attractive to quite a few schools had he managed to post a winning record for the third year in a row. The larger programs love to pluck coaches with talent from the lesser conferences. It's like a proving ground to them. And after this year, I think that many people that may have been looking hard at Brookhart decided to take a step back for awhile.
  18. Boy, that really hurts that we could have had him.
  19. I was in shock when I found out that we were not even going to be an at-large. It goes with the territory. Does anyone recall how badly we got screwed on our seeding in last year's tournament? Even when we were #1 for most of the year? If we had been seeded so that we didn't have to play our 2nd round game (against the eventual national champs) on the road, we might have a national championship trophy sitting in Akron right now.I give this award to the NCAA's soccer braintrust
  20. That's a fact. Everyone will still be out of town on January 3rd. Plus, if BG is nationally ranked at the time, WATCH OUT, that could create one of those 40-point blowouts. I'm not being negative. I'm just saying that we need to be realistic about facing a team of any kind of national caliber. I'm happy with any kind of progress, and just being able to beat someone at this point.
  21. Guys. I don't believe that we get hurt by having an opponent that has lost a key player for a game or two. I think that come tournament time, they'll look at who we've beaten, and what their rating is, and won't remember a small stretch where another team played poorly, or without a key player, etc.
  22. 74Zip...there's been some discussion on here already concerning this issue. I think quite a few people are of the opinion that we'd suffer if the soccer stadium is approved first. I also think that a number of us would like to see Akron get the new stadium, and allow a soccer team to use it. In my opinion, this is a move by Wohlstein to satisfy his ego and have a great soccer facility here in our county, which I don't believe will get much use. However, he is attempting to sell it with the message of "job creation".If this soccer stadium happens, and we follow that by needing more public funding for an Akron football stadium, I have a sick feeling that we'll end up playing in the Rubber Bowl for quite a few more years.
  23. Hey guys. Remember a few years ago we had an outside linebacker prospect, who we knew was a good football player, and he was tall, but was also thin, and needed to grow a little bit. His name was Jason Taylor.
  24. Zips Win.....I have to agree with you. I'm sure the ladies program has a long way to go to even be respected in the MAC, let alone actually win a some games. I do admire that the Rowdies are getting out there though. That says alot for our character as fans. But the sad truth remains.... 99.9% of the people living in Akron just don't care about the U of A women's basketball team. And that won't change a whole heck of a lot, even if they did start to win a few games.Good luck coach Kest. You should be commended for taking on such an incredible challenge.
  25. Thanks TX. Good stuff. It looks like they will be in for quite a fight to try to get this done. But, I admire their quest to grow their program. And the Sun Belt is really starting to gain some notoriety as a league.Back in the mid-80's, after we turned 1-A, we DID have these kinds of ambitions. But, when Bill Muse left to go to Auburn, we really lost the man who had this vision. I hope we're heading in that direction again.
