UA in the news

I woke up to this story on the WEWS Morning News today.

http://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/oh-cuyahoga/akron-police-looking-for-four-men-accused-in-robbery-and-shooting-at-jewelry-store

It's bad enough that they had to mention the Univ. of Akron on TV for something like this, but they also said it was across the street from Infocision Stadiium.  :wall:

What a shame that the only time a Cleveland News Network utters the words "Infocision Stadium" is for an event like this.

"Other factors include competition for international students from schools in other countries, as well as politicians’ remarks about controlling immigration."

Politicans' remarks!!!  The new PC.  Why use a plural? (politician's remarks would be factual)  lol

That is an incredible gift. The Audiology program is an overlooked part of UA, hidden away in the lower levels of the Polsky Building, just below the IT school, UA's other hidden gem.

Big scholarship donations for programs like this can instantly vault them to competitiveness on a national level. Kids tend to go to the university that offers them the most scholarship money, especially for highly specialized programs where the applicant pool is not very large.

My daughter was a scholarship recipient from this wonderful department for her grad level classes, and she was well ahead of the curve whn she got her Masters as far as having real world experience through their internships, passed all her state tests with flying colors and was better prepared for the job market.  Now a speech and hearing pathologist, thanks to many fime profs but especially Dr. DePompei...

Too bad Jean wasn't a basketball fan. The Jean Howard Taber Arena would have had a nice ring to it...

In all seriousness though, that is an amazing gift.

The Jean Howard Taber School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, probably.

eBay bringing back to life the real engine of the U.S. economy — small businesses.

"eBay and Akron, Ohio — taking local businesses who often struggle in their markets and giving them effective, affordable tools to reach a new world of consumers.

We are trying something new — a retail revival initiative in Akron that uses the power of the online marketplace and technology to build a reservoir of resources to help entrepreneurs scale.

Small businesses, like Tiny Circuits that designs and builds small open source electronics in an old rubber factory in Akron, will benefit from exposure on technology platforms like ours. It will help them gain access to 190 markets around the globe."

Great article from the Wooster Daily Record: University of Akron president: College still good return on investment

WOOSTER - Imagine a university where online gaming is a varsity sport, where Fridays are given over for career fairs and guest speakers and where the president pops up at everything from intramural basketball games to the tuba section of the school band...
