I'll never understand the little kid syndrome that plagues the Akron people or for that matter the people in Cleveland who think they are better than the people from Akron. I heard Proenza said it early in his tenure at Akron when speaking at the Cleveland City Club....we need to think more NE Ohio as a region in order to bring the entire region back to prosperity. We can't have an us and them mentality. I've got no time for a$$holes like Lebron who continue to perpetrate that mentality and give the finger to a city who supported and loved him. This conversation is in the general UA & Campus Discussion forum and this has nothing to do with The University of Akron it has to do with Lebron continuing to try to divide the city of Akron and Cleveland -- instead of being the force that could unify them and bring the area back to economic good times. Akron continues to be a leader in job loss and lack of job creation....this isn't going to help anything.

A Clevelander's concept of regionality is to put all the money into downtown CLE and let everywhere else rot. Until Cleveland begins to acknowledge that there are other cities in the area that aren't a part of their system of suburbs, Akron has to fight for itself.

Amen. It's starkly clear to anyone who pays attention, or who has paid attention over the last who-knows-how-many-years, to how Cleveland uses the ol' "Northeast Ohio" tag. Most anything popular and beneficial is tagged "Cleveland" or "Cleveland area." Screw that and screw them. How was the Zips v. WMU coverage on the Cleveland news last night? Exactly. Screw them. We in Akron have to fight for our own & LBJ's keeping Akron in the culture's consciousness. Frankly, LBJ's the only thing keeping Akron in the public consciousness. Akron would cease to exist if the Cleveland media had it's way.

Keep representing 330, 'Bron!

Edit: How's about "Cleveland +"? :puke:

Edit #2: That website probably got a million hits... yesterday! Thanks, 'Bron!

Since when does 'Bron represent the whole area of the 330? Last time I checked it wasn't just the Akron area. This would be news to Canton, Warren, Youngstown and everywhere else in between.

I am with BigZip on this one. Fighting with Cleveland is childish and immature to say the least.

Screw Cleveland...

Cleveland screws the rest of NE Ohio and believes it should be that way. Regionalism may apply to Garfield Hts. and Cleveland, but Akron is no suburb.

I grew up in North Summit county, but almost EVERYTHING I did was north towards Cleveland, but I hold no allegiance to Cleveland.

I have some perspective on the differences.

I agree that Cleveland uses whatever political force it can to horde attention and resources (zip37's example of moving the arena to cleveland is a good one, thanx). I know some people like the big city event atmosphere, but most people would rather not have to drive downtown, deal with the traffic, parking prices, and dirty city. The only drawback to Richfield was that there wasn't jack around in terms of restaurants and bars (a few exceptions could probably be cited, Richfield tavern I think maybe?).

Cleveland drove out businesses and Middle Class residents with high taxes, so they have to take what they can and force it into their city so that they can leach revenue from the rest of the region in order to slow the impending spiral of doom.

Saying it's "childish" to fight cleveland is like saying you should open your door to a rapist.

He needs to stay in Miami and leave Akron alone.

Are you from Akron? Sure, lets not take any benefits from having maybe the most well-known athlete in the world as our hometown boy. He talks about Akron at every opportunity, and his contributions to the area continue, as promised. But lets push him away because he saw a better opportunity in his career by working for another team other than the team in Cleveland. And lets remove the picture of him and KD that's in our basketball program. We don't want to use any of those connections ot our advantage.

Please enlighten me to which elite basketball player we have on our current roster who came to Akron as a result of KD's relationship with Lebron?

Also, this continued sycophant belief that he brings anything to Akron has yet to be proved. He brings a basketball tournament in the summer (which I believe he moved elsewhere) and he brings a bicycle ride (which donated a paltry sum of $180,000) last year to the Akron Ubran League. If he had written this check himself it would have come to the palry .3% of his earnings in 2010. That is like donating $78 for someone making $20,000.

This imaginery benefit Lebron James brings to Akron or the University needs to stop. Please include actually facts when talking about the impact he has on this community.

Lebron James turned his back on this community (whether you want to believe it or not) when he left for Miami. He wasn't an Akron Cavalier, but if you think his ability to impact this community is better from Miami than it would have been playing in Cleveland you are out of your damn mind. Like it or not the only pro franchises in NE Ohio exist in Cleveland. That is where his opportunity to play close to home is like it or not.

Maybe you'd like to present some evidence that he has NOT had any impact on the Akron area. Come on. That's an absurd remark. A world-famous athlete promotes his hometown like no athlete I've ever seen. You can't buy that kind of publicity. If you truly believe that this has not benefitted Akron or the University, I might have to question which planet you live on. His basketball tournament and bike-a-thon only scratch the surface.

You can't prove something didn't happen....you can prove something did happen and I'm asking for actual hard evidence. So what the city gets mentioned when talking about him. Has it even brought one job to this community? Has it done anything to better anyone's life in this community. If he had a real measurable impact it would be visible.

Yes. Yes he has.

In just the past six months he donated hundreds of new computers to the Akron Public Schools, gave out thanksgiving meals to the homeless, and gave bicycles to underprivileged kids. All in Akron. Not Cleveland. Not Miami.

Not to mention an improved sense of Akron being its own city and not a tag-along to a selfish and empty shell of a rust-belt city. Some people actually want to be recognized as just another Cleveland suburb, providing no more to the region than Broadview Heights or Chagrin Falls.

Should we just throw all that away because he took a better job opportunity somewhere else? He still comes back here, you know. Whenever he gets the chance. To visit his family and his friends and the places he still loves from when he was growing up.

And just maybe he did the right thing by going to Miami, given the current state of the Cavaliers without him (or did Shaq and Z make that much difference?). If I was at a job where I consistenly outshined everyone else and I saw the ceiling of the company was as far as it was going to go, I'd probably leave too. I realize he is still a very polarizing figure, and how he left was probably still more hurtful than the fact that he did. I also realize he said his goal was to win a championship in Cleveland and he wasn't going to stop until he did but don't you think every athlete would say that? Would it have been better if he had said "I won't stop until we win or say, four more years passes?" Would that have helped? I don't want him to win a championship in Miami either, but time will pass, this too will heal and his association with his hometown will be a good thing.

Varajoe is out for the season and Mo hasn't played much. That would have made some difference, maybe not a lot though.

SInce you are using your job, If you told your bosses what you wanted and they got it for you and then they couldn't find more people because you wouldn't commit to staying, don't you feel that would fall back on you?

It's LeDouchebags fault that this team is where it is right now. Ok, I guess in reality it is Danny Ferry and Dan Gilberts fault because they allowed LeDouchebag to have so much power. However, you should be able to understand my point.

Stop with the inferiority complex! Akron is its own city...Akron is as big of an empty shell of a rust belt city as Cleveland. NE Ohio has the ability to impact the world at least the country economically a lot better than just one city alone. Yet the pissing match continues between the cities. Just dumb!

Suck up to Lebron all you want....I don't care if you wish to be on his jock. The guy had a chance to be something special here and not he dumped Akron just like he dumped Cleveland. Don't act like he wasn't telling Akron to "F" off when he left the Cavaliers. Great he has a house here and a bike rodeo...oh yeah he also donated some computers to the schools -- great! His impact on this city and our University has been far less than many other business leaders in this community that didn't tuck their tail and run south.

He played for the team that had the best record in basketball the last two years and he took a dive in the playoffs last year to help his exit. The guy is an ass and I don't think he has any connection to my alma mater.

Well heck, I live in Wadsworth. I never lived in Akron. I guess I'm suppose to HATE Akron. We have to compete with Akron.

Never mind the fact that when Akron gets something, Wadsworth's hotels and eateries and traffic ticket window benefits.

We're better than Akron and Cleveland. Never mind we benefit from anything Akron gets. Hell we'll benefit from the casino, a winning sports team, maybe even the Medical Mart (rotfl.gif). But we can do it ourselves. We can start up four TV stations, a major college, upscale shopping, great ethnic restaraunts, museums, we'll get our own NFL team too. Yeah we're a hell of a lot smaller than the primary city in our market. We don't need them, we can do all this ourselves.

I betcha Lorain can too!!!

I just don't understand that mentality...
