Interesting Poll - Part Deux

Recommended Posts

Of those on the list, Dwight Smith is the best. He could do it all. Ints., blocked kicks, returned kicks and played offense. Single handedly won games.

Chase Blackburn was a better player than both Frye and Hixon.

I voted for Dwight Smith on this one. I probably seen him play one of the most dominating college games at DB that I have ever seen. He won a game against Ken+ pretty much by himself at DB. Taylor would be a close second for overall career. Hixon third for that catch. Best play in the biggest game. Fun poll.

Obviously JT, because he goes straight to the Hall of Fame (and Canton is not far from Akron).

BUT

I voted for Hixon. Hopefully, he is not done. Already holds several Giants records, and can still have some great years.

Unlike most of you Akron locals, I get to watch him every single game. Healthy, the best return man in the game. Just totally mis-used by the Giants. They used him on punts, but his REAL forte is kickoffs. When he gets up a head of steam, it only takes one cut and he is off to the races.

I look forward to getting him back. It really screwed us last year when he went down. There just was no one available to replace him.

And Chase is the most solid player on the Giants. NOT a great athlete, but he plays his ass off and manages to be in the right place at the right time.

New York Giants’ Domenik Hixon Nearing Full Strength

March 6th, 2011 at 6:27 PM

By Sean Carroll

Just days after the New York Giants re-signed special teams return man, Domenik Hixon, news followed that he is closing in on a full recovery from the ACL injury he sustained during mini-camp last year. With the new contract in place, and formally inked, Giants fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that not only is Hixon remaining a Giant, but should also be ready to take back his role as Big Blue's return man.

As reported on Giants.com, Hixon is elated about his recovery, explaining:

"I feel real comfortable, I feel strong…I was joking with one of my buddies. We were running together and I told him, ‘I feel like I gained a step.'"

Recovering Hixon for the next season will be a step gained for Big Blue as well. In 2009, Hixon stood-out in his punt and kick return performances. Specifically, the Akron alumnus set a New York Giants single-season record in 2009 with 57 kickoff returns for 1,291 yards averaging 22.6-yards per return. Hixon also averaged 15.1-yards per punt return, including a 79-yard touchdown.

The Giants did not have any kick or punt returns for touchdowns in the 2010 season. Part of that blame rests on one of Hixon's 2010 replacements, Darius Reynaud. Reynaud put up lackluster stats in 2010 with an average of 5.7 yards per punt return and 18.4 yards per kickoff return. Despite his disappointing performance, the Giants also re-signed Reynaud to a one-year contract in order to offer some competition to Hixon for the return man position.

It is unlikely this competition will amount to much.

Hixon also elaborated on his preparations and training for the next NFL season, sharing:

"I'm preparing myself as well as I can and getting all the rust off now so when I get back out there I'll be ready for the season and be at full speed. I'm back doing everything full speed. I'm trying to simulate the season I missed with different things."

Seeing #87 fielding kickoffs and punts will be a welcomed change of pace for Giants fans, as will the speed, agility, and experience Hixon brings along with him.

Great news on Hix. Love watching him, and Chase, play the game. But didn't the G-men pick up a return specialist in the draft?

This was a tough one. I was friends with Jason Taylor in school (Poly Sci!!)and it was great watching him on Saturdays. For some reason I don't have many memories of Dwight Smith... though I do recall some very acrobatic INT's. Hixon brought possibly my very favorite sports moment in my life with THE catch in Detroit.

I decided to go with Frye.

I thought with Charlie at QB, our offense had a chance to keep us in every single game.

From the moment he stepped in for an injured Nick Sparks for the OU game, to his mvp performance in the Senior Bowl, it was Frye that brought the most good memories for me.

Now if the poll was "Who is the best football player from U of A" that has to be Jason Taylor. Though, I'm not really sure how his career measures up to John Heisman!

Had to go with JT on this one.

The greatest player on that list is Taylor. JT is the only NFL HOF on that list. Not sure if J. T. is the greatest Zip though. I would have to go with Charlie Frye. I will never forget that 4th quarter comeback against Marshall at the Rubber Bowl.

I'll never forget the Marshall punter fumbling a snap from center. It was exactly the kind of thing that normally happens to the Zips.

Right! And that game my dad gave up and left early to "beat traffic" lol.

Exactly!

Remember the last second "bomb" td pass from Rape-lesberger to beat us?

There were demonic entities at work in the Rubber Bowl. Lets hope nobody gives them directions to the Info.

I think this is a detail that a lot of people forget. All he had to do was put a foot on the ball, and the game was over !! But, I hope we got a little bit of payback for our bad luck with the ending of the MAC title game against NIU, and the final play of the Western Michigan road game a couple years later.

I have to vote with Kangaroo Craig in the poll. JT indeed had the greatest total football career of any Zip ever. But, Charlie's list of accoplishments as a Zip are astounding.

Who holds more Akron passing records, Charlie or Luke? Doesn't Luke have most td's in a season? Frye has all time passing yards I think. Of course he played twice as many games as Luke. I can't seem to find akron all time passing records with a google search.

I believe most of the information you're looking for is on pages 13-15 of THIS (the 2010 media guide)

Well, I thought this would be easy, I'll just go to GoZips.com and look it up. The most recent version of the football media guide that actually had a working link was from 2007. At least that would work for the Getsy/Frye comparisons. Strictly based on the fact that Luke only had two years in the program, Frye leads him in almost every category (except things that are game based, like passing yards per game - Getsy is ahead of Frye). Also as of that date, Fyre and Getsy owned the top ten passing yardage performances in UA history, and 16 of the top 20.

For comparisons of thier stats you can go here. Just don't expect anything newer (sigh).

Edit: OK, how did you find that, what sort of insider information do you have? :) There isn't a direct link from the football media guide page to the 2010 Guide.

OK, jot this down :D

1) enter GoZips.com

2) click on Football from "Sports" pulldown menu

3) click on Media Guide heading (3rd from left, next to News and Game Notes)

4) click on Akron Football Media Supplement (on the right of the image of iCoach)

What could be more straightforward?:lol::lol:

Whoa, look at the difference in Att. between Frye and Getsy.

Single Season Leaders (By Total Yards)

Rk. Player G Att Cmp Int TD Yds Pct YPG

1. Charlie Frye (2003) 12 421 273 9 22 3,549 .648 295.8

2. Luke Getsy (2005) 13 525 278 12 23 3,455 .529 265.8

The offensive style changed quite a bit between Paul Winters and JD Brookhart.

Frye Records in 46 games: Career passing, Season passing yards, Most pass completions in game, Completions per game, highest completion percentage (game, season & career), lowest percent of passes intercepted career & game, Touchdowns in career, passes completed in a game.

Getsy Records in 25 games: Single game passing, Most passing attempts in a game, Most pass completions in season, Touchdowns in a season & game, Yards in a half, consecutive passing attempts w/o an int, mac championships won, bowl game appearances.

Interesting stats DrZ. Thanks for posting.

I'm surprised Getsy had the most touchdowns in a season & game. Maybe not a season because they played one more game in 2005 compared to 2003, but Owens had teams that scored a lot. I'm shocked Frye isn't at the top of those two.

I like the touchdown in a season & game statistic Getsy has. Charlie has a lot of records that come with starting four years. Charlie also has a lot that look good, but aren't near the top of things you want your QB to do. For example, completions in a game are nice only if you win the game or they turn into TDs. Charlie played in an offense that flooded the field with WRs and he picked the open one. Not hard to do compared to the pro style offense Getsy played.

Getsy got run out of town, but when he was on, he was deadly. Just ask NIU.

Based solely on his Zips career, I have to go with Dwight Smith (though Steve Cockerham was pretty damn good too).

Agree. Ignoring what any did in the pros. Although correct me,wasn't it Smith who returned two ints. for TD's w/Tampa?

But, at Akron he could take one side of the field away from the offense and was fast enough to run guys down on the other side of the field.
