117 Players You Should Know in 2004

Akron QB Charlie Frye

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Writeup by Pete Fiutak

Who is Charlie Frye? ... To go or not to go. Few college football players, at least the ones that aren't delusional, get the good fortune to try and make the decision whether or not to turn pro early. Akron quarterback Charlie Frye had the life altering decision to make, but in the end, he decided to come back to potentially be the nation's best quarterback.

Most likely a third round pick if he had come out this year, Frye's stock could shoot through the roof with a big senior season as he could jump into the first round. He's the nation's leading returning player in total offense per game accounting for 319.8 yards per game last year, but he's more than just mass yards. Along with Toledo's Bruce Gradkowski, Frye is primed and ready to pick up the honor left be Ben Roethlisberger, Josh Harris and Byron Leftwich as the next great MAC quarterback.

With tremendous all-around ability, Frye can do it all with over 625 career rushing yards to go along with being Akron's all-time leading passer with 8,426 yards. He's a tall quarterback with decent size and tremendous speed for a 225-pound player. With a great arm and a new passer-friendly West Coast offense installed by the new Zip coaching staff, he should be lighting up the NCAA stat charts all year long.

Beyond all the physical attributes, Frye has the total command of his team. "He's been a leader for this team the last three seasons both on and off the field," said Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart. "He's someone the rest of the team respects a great deal."

Frye's best game so far was ... in the 40-28 win at Central Michigan last year. There are several big games to choose from, but the win over the Chippewas might have been his best total performance completing 27 of 34 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 44 yards.

Why you should care about Charlie Frye ... He's not Roethlisberger or Leftwich, but he could quickly become college football's hottest NFL prospect as the season goes on. He'll have to get adjusted to the new coaching staff and a new offense, but he's been working hard in the off-season with Brookhart to learn how to run it. Akron might not be one of the MAC favorites this year, but Frye is more than good enough to ruin someone else's title hopes if he gets hot.

Positives about Frye ... He's big, fast and deadly accurate running a solid 4.6 in the 40 while able to use his body well around the goal line. When he's on, he's a brutally efficient passer and as accurate as any quarterback in the nation. There might not be a better throwing passer on the run. To go along with all the other positives, he works his tail off and plays well through nicks and bruises.

Negatives about Frye ... He doesn't have a huge arm even though he throws a nice deep ball. One of the knocks from the scouts was over his lankiness as he looked like a skinny player. He's adding a bit of bulk, but he might not be quite as strong as the prototype NFL quarterback is supposed to be. He lights up bad teams like a Christmas tree, but he hasn't been all that effective against the better teams (even though he threw for a ton of yards against Wisconsin last year and Virginia in 2002.)

A cool thing about Frye that you probably didn't know ... He was named the 2003 Akron Dapper Dan Sports Person of the Year. He continues to be one of Akron's top workers in the community. ... He's a Dean's List student.
