In case you missed the news last night, Coach Dan Peters has taken a leave of absense from the Zips Mens Basketball Team. Dan is battling pancreatic cancer and will start his treatment on Monday. 4 Petes Sake Please Keep Dan and his family in your prayers as he battles this deadly disease. The team has dedicated this season to him and will be wearing patches on their uniforms to show their support. Dan was planning on retiring after this season. Steve McNees will assume his duties for the foreseeable future.

Coach Peters is a classy guy; I suggest mailing him a Christmas card/get well note; I'm sure he and his family and the Zips staff & players would love seeing a big bag of mail for him to read through. A few prayers are requested as well.

I had a chance to talk to Coach Peters at practice today. He is feeling as good as can be expected and really appreciates the prayers and support of all the fans. I could tell that he really misses being on the bench and helping the players at practice. He is a great example of what a positive attitude can do for you in all aspects of life. Even though he has been dealt a bad hand, he is very thankful for how his faith has let him live a joyful life. What an inspiration to me!

It's with a heavy heart that I must report than Dan passed last night. He was as prepared as anyone I have ever met to make his way to Heaven. Please keep his family in your prayers as they work their way through this difficult time. RIP Dan Peters, a wonderful human being.

Prayers went up in belief and hope this day wouldn't come....but now that it has I must echo the comment above that Coach Peters was at peace with his Maker all the while fighting this terrible disease. He was "old school" in every way and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. He was a wonderful mentor, coach and friend to my son and all the other Zips who had the good fortune to know him and be coached by him. I'm praying for peace and grace for his wife and sons all the while relieved this difficult stretch of his life has ended with his entrance into eternity with his God where he will suffer no more.

God's speed Dan, your smile, presence and positive impact will be greatly missed!

Years ago at the very first Zips basketball practice I ever attended, the first person to walk up and introduce himself was Coach Peters. From that day until the last time I recently saw him, he remained one of the most genuinely warm, friendly and thoughtful persons I've ever known. Clearly he cared a lot about other people, and many in turn cared a lot about him. He made a big impression on me and caused me to look within myself and try to be more like him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all of those who were close to him.

Rest assured that Coach "Pete" is safely enjoying the fruits of his labors in paradise.

While we will miss Dan greatly, and the wound in our hearts will be long in healing, we need to be joyous that he has gained

the eternal reward we all seek. Dan was a wise and loving man. His passing shakes all college and professional coaching.

God speed Coach; my friend.
