Lady Zips Soccer

Recommended Posts

The Akron women's soccer team opens it's season tomorrow against Bryant. They're running some ticket promotions (taken from the team's twitter account), if anyone is interested in checking out the new coach's team. Should be a perfect night for soccer.

Lady Zips up 1-0 at halftime in their season opener. They look very solid right now. Controlled possession for majority of the first half, and are playing an aggressive attacking style. I'd be shocked if they finish this match with only one goal.

7pm @ Niagara tonight. Will be a much tougher test for the Lady Zips.

Some notes from the gozips.com article:

- Katie George, a senior, has played 54 games and never scored a goal as a defender. New coach Noreen Herlihy moved her to midfield and she scores two goals in the season opener.

- Freshman Rachel Baughman(the one I mentioned in the offseason) assisted on two goals in her collegiate opener.

- 4th all-time meeting between the Zips and the Purple Eagles(first since 2005). Niagara is 3-0-0 against the Lady Zips.

- Niagara won 9 of 11 games at home last season.

- Purple Eagles lost 1-0 to Michigan State to open the season. Spartans had 11 shots compared to Purple Eagles' 3 shots.

- Herlihy on Niagara: "
We are looking to go up there and maybe shake things up a bit. They are a quality team but we aren't going to fear anybody this year. We are going to go up to Niagara with confidence and with the mindset of getting a result on the road."

Akron tied Niagara 0-0 on the road. Not a bad result for the first road game with a VERY young, but talented squad.

"We were up against a strong physical team and are pleased with the effort shown by the players. We couldn't have asked anymore of them," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "Defensively we were solid and we will continue to work hard to improve each week in all facets of the game. We still have plenty of work to do but it was a decent result on the road and we can take a lot of positives from tonight."

Next game is Tuesday at HOME vs Cleveland State. Kick-off set for 7:00pm.

Lady Zips improve to 2-0-1 with 4-2 win over Cleveland State. Next up is @ St. Bonaventure on Friday, and Cornell (@ St. Bonaventure) on Sunday.

St. Bonaventure is 1-1-2 on season(W vs Buffalo, L @ Binghamton, T @ Canisus & T vs Oakland).
Cornell is 1-0-1 on season(W vs Loyola, T vs Siena).

I expect the Lady Zips to come out of this weekend with either two ties, two wins, or one tie and one win. Any loss will be disappointing this weekend.

Katie George, who didn't score a single goal in her 3 previous seasons with the Lady Zips, she has had her second match(out of three) this season with two goals(4 for the season and her career now). Coach Herlihy thought she would be more suited for midfield than defender, and it's already showing results.

Match stats don't even look as close as the score indicated. Lady Zips scored in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. St. Bonaventure scored in the 83rd minute to tie it up at 1-1. Lady Zips then scored in the 90th minute(less than 20 seconds left) to win 2-1 AT St. Bonaventure. They play a neutral site game vs Cornell on Sunday. Lady Zips now improve to 3-0-1.

Lady Zips down 0-1 at the half.

Cornell looks solid. Best team on our schedule so far. Having a hard time getting any combinations without disrupting pressure from them. It's a battle of unbeaten teams, and hopefully we can get a goal in the 2nd half to tie this up at 1-1.

A lot to work on, but I still like the solid start to the season for the Lady Zips. You'll have some bumps in the road when playing a different style with new coaching staff teaching "incumbent" student-athletes is never an easy task. I think this team will fight for the MAC East title and should make the MAC tournament. However, I won't go as far as expecting them to win the MAC title(until next year).

Congrats to the Lady Zips on taking down the #1 seed, Ball State, in PK's today. They will play #5 seed, Miami(OH), at Western Michigan on Friday, November 6th in the MAC Semifinals. The other semifinal is #2 Western Michigan hosting #3 Buffalo.

In fact, of the 4 quarterfinal matchups, only the Western Michigan-Toledo one didn't go to PK's. Akron won 4-3, Miami won 4-3, and Buffalo won 3-1(WMU won in regulation, 3-0).

That's pretty amazing considering they had to win a four-way tiebreaker to even get the final seed. From GoZips.com:

Following the final regular season matches of MAC play on Thursday, Oct. 29, there was a four-way tie for the eighth and final spot. Akron, Ohio, and Bowling Green finished 3-8 in the MAC and Northern Illinois was 2-9-3, but each team had nine 9 points.

The tiebreaker rule was put into effect to determine who came out with the final spot. The four teams were grouped together to see which teams had the most head-to-head wins. Akron had six points with a win over Ohio and Northern Illinois. Ohio also had six points with wins over Bowling Green and Northern Illinois.

The tie between the Zips and the Bobcats was broken with Akron's head-to-head 2-0 win over Ohio on Sept. 27.
