"When Lamonte Bearden threw in a crazy scoop layup that he seemed to get once a game, we broke out the "he's a freshman" chant. The AK-Rowdies had one of their players score after that and they chanted "he's a sophomore" in illogically dumb fashion. Also, our chant was louder."

LOL, I have always said that the Rowdies are unoriginal and lame. I was at that game and remember the Rowdies getting shut up by those 40 fans. The Rowdies were more focused on the chants that the Buffalo students were throwing at them than the game.

I was at that game and remember how loud the Buffalo students were that game and I am surprised there were only 40 students.  I remember other Buffalo games where there seemed to be close to 100 Buffalo students and they were always loud.  It is great that students have passion for MAC basketball no matter what the school.  I think having a full house of passionate students makes for a great college atmosphere.  The Kent game is usually a sellout and makes that game great instead of half filled stands that make for a quiet Jar.  I have gone to the Kent game at Kent and our students are loud and make a good showing.  Looking forward to the Kent games this year and hopefully we will have a big Akron contingent at that game.

My take on it is -

If you're a "real" Zips fan, or a Bulls fan, you aren't a bandwagon guy. Something happened that hooked you on following the school's athletic programs. For this kid, it was taking a flier on a bus trip to Akron. For you, maybe it was an Acme Zip game or an OVC Championship.

At schools like OU and Miami...I'll even throw Kent in there...there's tradition. Alumni come back in decent numbers for homecoming. That doesn't happen at Buffalo or Akron. You need to be a do-it-yourselfer. It's either that, or, sit in your dorm room and follow your "state" school.

There's as much fun available as you want to experience being a student at Akron or Buffalo. You just need to get your ass of the couch, get away from the TV or computer, and find it. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of people are motivated to do that anymore. Or, in the past (reference the tumbleweeds rolling through the Rubber Bowl during any other football game than the Acme Zip Game).

There are more kids out there like this one. But someone needs to work to find them. Show them a good time and they'll multiply. Unfortunately, every 4-5 years you get a new plan, a new administration...and any headway gets erased as the new crew implements their plan. Lather, rinse, repeat.

That's almost exactly what I'd expect from a college kid but not in a bad way. He's kind of dickish but so were most of us in college. :)  That's a young man grew some passion for his school and will probably be a life long fan. That's good in the MAC.

I like how he really goes completely out of his way to make sure that he describes Ohio as an AWFUL STATE, more than once.  Maybe they get very sensitive after about 12 years of "Buffalo's In Canada".

I'm sure that the way they were treated by Akron fans was probably exaggerated from his own perspective.  Sounds like the National Guard should have been called to safely escort them out of Akron

But, I've really gained an appreciation for MAC fans in general over the years.  I give a lot of credit to all of the kids who choose to display their passion for THEIR OWN school instead of bandwagonning with the "most recognized" schools in their states.  Buffalo fans could easily choose to be Syracuse basketball fans.  But, I wonder if that all has an opportunity to change here for now, since the Suckeyes have plummeted nationally, and have now perennially fallen way behind Dayton, Xavier and Akron for a couple of years now?

We need to take advantage.

Side Note:  Our RPI gained 6 points in the last couple of days, virtually gaining back what we lost after the OU game.

My number one problem with the Rowdies is their total lack of rhythm and timing.  Every time they eff up the Let's Go Zips chant by stomping too soon pisses me off.  It's not that hard.  1-2-3-4.  1-2-3-4.  Lets-Go-Zips-Stomp.

Not that I disagree, but its hard to be in sync when you are separated and can't see the people leading chants.

I call BS on the "Police escort". I remember that game and it was fun. I wish our students would just show up at the home games let alone travel to the road games.

Sounded like Hyperbole for the story to me too.

40 involved/participating students at our OWN home game would be nice right about now, wouldn't it?

(At the serious risk of sounding like a BobKitten Blogger) my two cents is that no one has stepped up to lead the Rowdies.  We had some dynamic, funny, obnoxious leaders who would get right in the face of the coaches.   I loved the old "Erroneous on all Counts" sign with the crying Kent cheerleader (maybe I'm conflating two signs).  And I think having the Rowdies n the corner with the opposing team was awesome.  But then someone on here complained about the Band being in the opposite corner because they were too loud.  Not much will change until some students are willing to step up.

Give me 1000 of him all day every day.

I think something the University needs to look into when it comes to renovating the JAR, is creating 2 levels in the lower bowl, and putting the students in the lower level of that lower bowl - Duke style. Make the first row in the second level of the lower bowl high enough as to not have a view obstructed by the heads of the students in front of them. I know I always enjoy watching a game from a more elevated seat, so this might even be more enjoyable for the big donors and season ticket holders that occupy the current lower bowl. This would give the students more of a visually pleasing view of the game - not obstructed by a basketball hoop - and would create a more involved/inviting atmosphere for students. College basketball is all about the atmosphere. If it ain't loud, crazy, and fun, what's the draw? What would draw someone to Akron over Ohio State, if the atmosphere is lame at Akron along with the lack of quality competition?

Z.I.-P.S. What the Bulls fan left out of the article was the cost of the bus trip was $5, but he'd have to buy his own passport. Probably why his ex-girlfriend thought he was insane. BUFFALO'S IN CANADA!

Just to clarify, I was well into my thirties before I became "kind of dickish."

I agree the current set up of the JAR makes it terrible to create a good student vibe. The 20 most hardcore fans are on the floor and all the regular/casual students are a mile away above the basketball hoop.

The blame goes to the fact that we have 20 rabid students sitting behind the baskets today, instead of the hundreds that we had waiting to get those floor-level seats a few years ago.  Not the configuration of the Arena.

In my day, we ALL sat in the bleachers, and we still made plenty of noise.

Watch the clip again of the ending of that game on Tuesday.  The noise was unbelievable.  If all of those students you reference who are sitting in the bleachers were paying attention to the game instead of playing on their phones all night, we can have a good atmosphere for more than just the final play of the game.

This may be unpopular here but it's the same 20 losers that were there when I was in school 10 years ago. Get out of the student section and maybe people won't think it's uncool to go down there
