Nobody on here is making "excuses". Its a logical discussion that doesn't fit some agendas, but whatever. We all go to games and are diehard Zips fans and want more people to come. What the hell would our incentive be to make "exuses" as to why people don't go or don't draw as well as other programs? Comparing Akron to VCU is laughable. Comparing the MAC to the A-10 is laughable.

The "back in my day" crowd loves to talk about how it was so much better back then. I'm pretty sure I was apart of multiple students attendance records in 2012/2013.

Actually the orginal post about VCU was in response to what can bring people to the JAR. I think that the band is vital in creating some excitement and creating a cool vibe in the arena. A cool vibe will bring in the students. For example, me and my daughter are going to the VCU/St. Louis game coming up. We care little about the game...we're going to see what antic the band does and be a part of the excitement. That can happen whether you're in the MAC, the A-10, or at the local high school.

People who want that type of entertainment around here go to see the Cavs, Canton Charge or Rubberducks.

Not quite what I said, and no disrespect toward the band. But few people go for the band like you do.

Yes, I agree it's probably very few.  But I had an interesting experience at one of our trips to the First Round NCAA Tourney games when one of those crazy brass bands from a southern historically-black school was playing all night.  It was unlike anything I had ever heard.  During the intermissions, everyone stopped and watched, and an arena-wide applause followed.

I think they can be good enough to entertain fans.  I think they sometimes help to get the juices flowing with the crowd too.  But I would be surprised to find that there's any evidence that they impact the gate receipts in any significant way.

So I'm the Buffalo fan who wrote this article and men's/women's basketball editor for Bull Run. Thanks to everyone who like the article.

Hmmmm, I remember them at that game and thought they were good fans (as opposed to the arrogant self-impressed kid in this article).

^But who hurt you? Lighten up, wasn't trying to be arrogant whatsoever. All it was is an article outlining my trip to the JAR and some trash talk (something everyone does in sports).

It was a good read, except he's extremely correct when he says arrogant.  I mean, you even admit to it yourself by saying:  "Some trash talk, something everyone does in sports".  There's a lot of arrogance when it comes to trash talk, so I don't get why you'd even point that out as something to call someone out on.  It is possible to trash talk with elegance however, without being arrogant.

But since you asked I'll point out the self-impressed arrogance in your own article for you:

I didn't know what to expect and my girlfriend at the time thought I was absolutely insane (which in hindsight makes me happy we're no longer together).

True Blue was LOUD and Akron fans were getting rattled towards us...

...in illogically dumb fashion. Also, our chant was louder...

After waiting for the arena to clear, we were then escorted through campus to our bus in the safe confines of the police. Multiple Akron students swore at us in the dark as we all laughed about how we shut down the J.A.R. with just 40 people. It was by far the best time I've been escorted out of a building by the police.

(The whole last few paragraphs of personal stuff that the reader shouldn't really care about)

Arrogance is found in the way you write/say things.  You can trash talk, without being arrogant.  You can explain a situation, and display its coolness, without being self aggrandizing.  Throwing your ex-gf under the bus, taking credit for rattling fans (fans always get rattled when they're team is losing...with or without the opposing fans present), calling Akron student Fans "ironically dumb" for something that happens in the course of fans shouting back in forth at a game.

The last couple paragraphs of self narrative might be important to you, personally, but they aren't to us the readers, which is why someone might point that out as self aggrandizement.

Just food for thought.  Thanks for stopping by.
