The Zips have traditionally had a multi-dimensional and explose offense. Seniors Stuart Holthusen (7g 1a) and Sam Gainford (4g, 3a) and junior Ezana Kahsay are among the forwards who will be called upon to fill the void that exists in that department in 2017 due to the departure of Adam Najem (5g, 5a) and Jonathan Lewis (2g, 12a). A solid contingent of capable midfielders return led by senior Pau Belana. Junior Ben Lundt will give the Zips a solid and experienced presence in goal. The backline will require some reloading due to graduation.
TennZip
did not want to create a separate topic...for the MAC poll SIU-Edwardsville is ranked #21 in the poll above....but one coach in the MAC thinks that WVU will finish ahead of the zips and SIU-E http://www.mac-sports.com/news/2017/8/15/mac-announces-2017-mens-soccer-preseason-poll.aspx

TennZip
this is not worth creating a separate list for... Top Drawer soccer put together a top 20 player list for each conference (which is a joke....because....it is tough to compare defenders to midfielders, forwards and goalies)....plus, they show Nick Hinds as a defender...and he will be playing in the midfield this year I will say that a healthy Stuart Holthusen (like we saw in the magical 2015 NCAA tournament run) deserves to be much higher on their list) 1 Sam Gainford ForwardAkron 2 Nicholas Hinds DefenderAkron 3 Kyle Dal Santo GoalkeeperSIUE 4 Pau Belana MidfielderAkron 5 Devyn Jambga ForwardSIUE 6 Jad Arslan MidfielderWest Virginia 7 Zachary BockDefenderWestern Michigan 8 Stuart Holthusen ForwardAkron 9 Brandon ByeMidfielderWestern Michigan 10 Anthony MwembiaGoalkeeperBowling Green 11 Mohamed AwadMidfielderSIUE 12 Tate RobertsonForwardBowling Green 13 Andrew ShepherdGoalkeeperWestern Michigan 14 Niko De VeraDefenderAkron 15 Louis ThomasDefenderWest Virginia 16 Greg SolawaMidfielderSIUE 17 Keegan McHughMidfielderSIUE 18 Luke ReadDefenderNorthern Illinois 19 Ben LundtGoalkeeperAkron 20 Steven JamesDefenderWest Virginia
72 Roo
Dr Z, you make a good point here. It seems Sam is getting a lot of press this pre-season. For our sake I hope he lives up to it. I am also of the opinion that Stuart when healthy is one hell of a weapon. He seemed to be more of a natural scorer than Sam. Of course Stu has got to learn to stay healthy. This could be a great year for the Zips if both are in good form.
