W Michigan 1-0 Akron

Zips physically dominated, if not tactically dominated, by a rough and tumble Bronco's squad.

Goal surrendered on a re-start, a weakness of Zips' since the W. Bush administration.

MAC play will be more interesting this year than in any in recent memory.

quote from a happy WMU coach...(attendance shows as 1,221 in box score)

"What a performance from the men today! That was the most discipline 90 minutes we have played all year." Head coach Chad Wiseman said. "Beating Akron doesn't happen often, it's certainly not easy but you have to give the players the credit for how they played today."

Jared not happy at all

"We were poor on the day this afternoon," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "We were not strong on the ball and we just kicked the ball instead of trying to pass. We lost focus on the back and were not tough enough individually and we had no identity today. We can't expect to win if we do not stay true to Akron Soccer and our identity. We lost sight of that today and we need to get it back Tuesday."

Always a rough physical match at WMU,  even at Cub Cadet.  Felt like we had lots of momentum coming in here,  Wind was tough to deal with, but no excuses.  Winner of MAC tournament now is only team to go to the NCAAs.

I beg to differ.

This will likely be the rare year when the MAC gets an At Large bid.

Both WMU and AKR are currently well into the top 48 in RPI.

Currently #11 and #20 respectively.

Both teams will be hurt some by playing the rest of the MAC.

But they are both probably going to make the tourney, seeded high, low, or otherwise.

Remember, NCAA could not care less about any poll.

NCAA Tournament seeding is 99% straight RPI.

Hope you’re right partner, but the NCAA also could care less about “little conferences” for more than 1 team, you know and have seen that happen time and time again.

Akron has quality wins over Michigan State and Washington.  Western Michigan has quality wins over top 25 teams Michigan and Butler.  Akron still has two top 30 RPI teams (Notre Dame and Pitt) on schedule.  As long as they both keep winning, both will be in NCAA.

WMU also had a quality win over Akron. The Zips winning out and not winning the MAC tournament could result in a NCAA berth dependent upon how much our RPI is hurt by our lesser opponents. However, this team needs to find itself and consistency for any NCAA Tourney berth to be possible this season.

I was at WMU. Congrats to the Broncos for doing what they needed to do to get the win. The Zips inconsistency reared its ugly head again. They did not play Akron soccer; they did not respond well to the adversity (wind and falling behind); they had opportunities and once again could not finish; they allowed another goal on a set piece, which the defense and GK just seemed to not be engaged in; and the Zips' set pieces were poor.  Another 0-1 road loss. Can't get to the NCAA Tourney this way. Need to dig deep and come together. This team has shown its resiliency in the past; need to find it quickly now.
