Akron Zips men’s team beats Northern Illinois Huskies 82-67

Published: January 20, 2018 - 6:40 PM | Updated: January 20, 2018 - 6:40 PM

The University of Akron men’s basketball team needed the game they played Saturday afternoon against Rhodes Arena against the Northern Illinois Huskies.

Behind four Zips (9-9, 2-4 in Mid-American Conference)  in double figures UA beat the Huskies (9-10, 2-4) 82-67and assumed control with 12:18 left in the first half and never looked back.

Gaurds Virshon Cotton and Malcolm Duvivier led the way for the Zips with 17 points each, followed by Daniel Utomi with 16 points. Guard Jimond Ivey added 10 rebounds to lead the team.

Dante Thorpe and Eugene German led the Huskies with 16 points each.

For the Zips it very well may have been their most complete game of the season as they played respectable defense and fund their offense.  UA outshot the Huskies 53 to 40 percent and connected on 15-of-31 three-point shots (48 percent) to NIU’s 4-of-15 (27 percent).

The Zips accomplished something that had been in short supply during the conference schedule.  They sprinted out of the gate against the Huskies. They found their offensive stroke early and connected often.

After the two teams exchanged scoring pleasantries flipping the lead six separate times during the first period, the Zips took control behind Duvivier and Cotton, who were often on the floor together. Each scored in double figures in the first half to give the Zips an offensive boost.

Tied at 11 with 12:18 left in the first period, the Zips outscored the Huskies 33-19 the rest of the way, connecting on 53 percent of three-pointers (9-of-17) in the frame to contribute to a 43-30 halftime lead after having led by as many as 17.

Oh my Freaking Gawd!!!!  This passes for journalism at the AKRON Beacon Journal????  WTF???  This had to have been written bya fourth grader!!!  Do they even employ an Editor???

This is sooo bad, on so many levels, first of all that it wasn't written by a real ABJ reporter,o r journalist, or whatever....

Just finished watching the reply.  Overall, a very well played game for the Zips.  The offense seemed to move - even without the ball.  A nice balance between 3 point shooting and inside play.  NIU is probably not the best team, but this is a good building block.  On to the Bobkittens.....

Great win for the Zips.  Not sure if there are going to be many double digit wins this year. KLac continues to improve.  Had a few nice rebounds and a nice take to the basket.  He looks better when he is playing against centers that are not very quick.

The big difference is todays game is how well we shot the ball, (50%) especially the 3 ball (48%).  It was great seeing Utomi hit the three ball in the second half.  These were not open threes but he found his eye.  This team can compete with any Mac team if they can shoot this well.  Many of the 3 ball shots were NBA 3 balls, especially by Duvivier.  We had a great rotation, rebounded well, had had more assist to turnovers.

This is the second game in a row where the other team shot over 30 foul shots.  We cannot blame this on the refs every time.  I did think that some of the calls were dubious.  There was one call where Duviver was on a center, the ball was rebounded by Northern Illiniois, Duvivier stayed in a crouched postion while the offensive player made a layup.  Duvivier never made a play on the ball and he got called for a foul.   Also, at the end of the game Duvivier fouled out on call where he did not touch the 3 point shooter.

Hopefully, the Zips can keep shooting this well and pick up a win on Tuesday.  Go Zips!

I believe this is the published story.  It's written by GT.  Sometimes they post a skeleton of the story they're working on immediately following the game and then flesh it out after getting some quotes at the post-game presser.

Re:  Officiating.  I didn't watch it real close, but it seemed like -- especially the first half -- they were calling offensive fouls like never before.  Can't remember that number of not just charges - but also moving screens called, on both teams.  Did it seem unusual to you?  Any way, other than watching a replay to find out the #s?

Oh my Freak-ing GAWD!!!! :P

French types just like he speaks on his early AM sports reports..

Speaking of broadcasters, I happen to strike up a conversation with the gentleman who does NIU radio.

He has been calling NIU games since 1980, so I figured he knew what he was talking about.

He said NIU had a young team, like us, that had difficulty on the road, like us.

Turns out, he was right. ;)

How is it possible that any healthy Division 1 men's basketball team is an underdog to this Zips team?

Mark Montgomery can't be long for the NIU HC job. Midway through his 7th season, he sits at 84–123 (.406).

It really amazed me how this decimated Zips team, with all it's injuries and defections, thoroughly whipped a healthy MAC team. Kudos to the coaching staff for keeping the guys focused.

Cotton has been a revelation. Until 3 or 4 games ago he'd really shown nothing that'd foreshadow the run he's been on. Seems like he suddenly became confident, and it's made all the difference in the world.

Patton isn't scoring all that much, but he continues to do a nice job on the boards.

It will be fun to watch Kostelac develop. He's such a big strong kid as a true freshman. With an off season to work on a low post game, he should make a big impact as soon as next season. Overall, you have to be happy with the coaching, and subsequent growth of all the players. The young guys show continuous improvement, and the older ones have added a lot to their game.

Nice to see the Zips honoring football's Andrew Hauser during the game...but they misspelled his name on the big screen - Houser? C'mon, man...

Should be a fun Tuesday night game vs. OU. How this Zips teams has a chance against anyone is beyond me...but they do. Let's see Utomi go for 32 again!
