One of (only?) Zips'Championship Teams

Besides Track and Field anyway....I know soccer is back in town Saturday, but the most successful team at Akron for the past five years has been the Swimming and Diving Team, 5-time MAC Champions (after never finishing higher than 8th).  They picked up the home-meet schedule nicely this season, adding about 3 new events to Ocasek, and the first is this weekend's first annual Akron Zips Classic, Friiday night at 5 and Saturday at 10 and at 5.  And they are bringing in Cincinnati, Xavier, Miami, Cleveland State and Dennison.  Cincy men won the AAC and women 2nd in 2018, CSU men were 2nd and women 3rd in Horizon League, and Dennison is the 4 time NCAA D3 champions on the men side and 4th in 2018 on the womens side.  Swim meets can be exciting, especially as all events will be timed finals, no prelims, and there is no diving this weekend.  Wear shorts and short sleeves if you come....

Last Friday night and all day Saturday was a good look at the upcoming Zips Swimming season, and it looks bright.  No diving comp to see, but the six teams present were all getting their feet wet (sorry!) on the season, so there was no real standout performances, although there was a Miami man who broke a pool record.  For Akron, it was disappointing to see Maddie Meyers out of uniform due to a shoulder injury.  Hopefully we'll see her in-pool soon, she's a national caliber swimmer.  Zips dominated the relays as usual due to their depth.  Paulina Nogaj won the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly, Sadie Fazekas was a triple winner, with the 50 free, the 100 Backstroke and the 200 fly, Jackie Pash won the 400 IM, Newcomer Sofia Hennell won the 200 free, Paula Garcia won the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke, another newcomer Avery Movold won the 200 Backstroke, and Ragen Engel won the 100 free.  The women have a dual meet upcoming against Buffalo October 26th and then the big Zippy Invitational three day meet is early December.  Hard to see any MAC team taking away their 5 year reign atop the tables.

Zips Women swimming and diving now ranked #22 IN THE NATION!!!

Dual against Buffalo Friday at Ocasek....  It'll take your mind off the MSOC team being in the dumper, and football struggling.....

Forgot to add - believe it or not, Friday's meet is TELEVISED on ESPN3!  Way to go Athletic Department to get this on the ESPN schedule!
