Bob Dyer: University of Akron football is invisible

"In June, interim University of Akron President John Green said half of the $1 million that had to be cut from the football budget this year would be offset by a huge boost in attendance that would result from the hiring of new coach Tom Arth.

Ahem.

The new coach's football team, with one game left to play, is 0-11. It is the worst team in the 130-school Football Bowl Subdivision, the only team without a single victory.

Arth is the only UA head coach without a win since Harry Wilson finished his career at 0-1 in 1896....

...Unfortunately, this year's team is difficult to watch in person or on TV. Statistically, UA is the worst FBS team in America in scoring, rushing offense, third-down conversions, sacks allowed, blocked kicks allowed and blocked punts allowed. They are second-worst in total offense, first downs and turnover margin."

This all falls on Larry Williams' shoulders.

FYI Bob - We haven't had a punt blocked this season. Source.

An impressive statistic considering how often we punt (2nd most punts in D1 @70, trailing only Vanderbilt's 72). We'll definitely move into the top spot tomorrow night, but "can we hold on through the weekend?" is the question on everyone's mind.

How about this for impressive?

"One bright spot for Akron this year has been is coverage on kickoffs, as it ranks first in the nation with an average of 13.54 yards allowed."

Coach Arth is probably highlighting this in his end of the year performance evaluation. 😉

We all know there is nothing new here, so why bring in Dyer to cherry pick another story to "expose."? Let Marla Ridenour or George Thomas write this story if they want. And is it really a front page Sunday story? I'm as critical as many about the new regime and some of the past decisions, but I prefer to hear it from people who are around the subject on a consistent basis.

His asseasment of Arth is spot on but there seems to be an obvious anti-football agenda.

Oh how dare a journalist speak the truth about our pathetic program

Bob Dyer is as much of a journalist as Jerry Lewis was a serious actor.

Hell I bet he could coach the Zips to at least 1 win

Jerry was great in The King of Comedy in a dramatic role. Its one of Scorsese's best movies.

Regarding the Dyer column, it was a bit of a pile-on, but he isn't wrong. One outstanding head coaching hire would make a huge difference in how the students and the community looks at Akron football.

However you feel about Dyer's story, apparently UA doesn't give a damn. 21,414 announced attendance tonight. Ridiculous. Did they buy ANOTHER 5,000 seats they couldn't give away?

AHA!

I think i have spotted the problem.

The two benchmarks with the largest bonus included in Arth's contract are limiting blocked punts and yards allowed on kick-off returns.

The guy is a coaching genius.
