Zipmeister Posted April 8, 2020 Report Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) one of many: University of Tampa comes to Akron as a huge favorite with future NFL players Freddie Solomon at QB and Leon McQuay at RB. It was a fire marshal special - around 40,000 in attendance. Akron kicks off, Tampa bobbles the kick and gets tackled at their own 4 yard line. First play from scrimmage, they fumble and Akron recovers at the 4 yard line. Akron runs it into the end zone on their first play. Final score: Zips 40 - Tampa 0. DannyHoke Posted April 11, 2020 Report Share Posted April 11, 2020 Missing from the history was the lack of effort that Fred Albrecht's idiot son, Steve, and ACME put into the game over the last decade that it was staged. ACME was providing $5,000 in cash sponsorship and was taking about $40,000 in tickets and selling them for $1, or outright giving them away with every grocery purchase, which was killing future ticket sales. Akron replaced Acme with GIANT EAGLE in 2003 and received $60,000 cash per year, plus another $100,000 in media value. I was an intern in the ticket office at that time and remember a lot of the old farts around the department whining about losing Acme until they found out what GE was bringing in.
