I'm only familiar with Josh Chandler (McKinley) and Tre'Von Morgan (Massillon).

I'd love to see us land Josh Chandler.  I think I tagged one of the Zips coaches in a retweet from him when I saw he was entering the Portal.  He's a good LB & I think would make an excellent MAC LB.

Tre'Von Morgan, who originally signed with Michigan State, is... underwhelming.  He's a physical specimen (6-6. 225?) but hasn't yet produced much between the lines.  It was sort of the same way in high school; he was definitely recruited because of his potential, not because of actual on-field production.  In high school he was clearly a man amongst boys, but he doesn't really have the greatest hands in the world.  He would typically make one spectacular, eye-popping, highlight-film-making catch per game... but drop a couple easier catches.  And he's a bit of a tweener - a little too big, i.e., not quite explosive enough, for WR and doesn't seem quite strong enough for TE (at the D-1 college level).  Maybe he's added some weight. Idk. But either way, I like it when local products are on the team.

Fun Fact on Tre'Von: his uncles (I believe that's the relation) played at Akron: Christian Morgan (6-4, 220) was a RB at Akron for one year and Marco Morgan (6-9) was a C/PF on the basketball team for two years.  The genes in that family are obviously amazing.

Bonus Fun Fact on Christian Morgan: man was I hyped when Lee Owens signed him.  He's one of the  most gorgeous athletes I've ever seen put pads on. I thought he'd be a 3-year All-MAC caliber player. But we also signed another RB that year out of the Pittsburgh area named Brandon Payne.  End of story.  Payne went on to become one of the greatest Zips RB of all time.  (I think Christian also had academic issues as I don't believe he ever graduated.)

I don’t know much about either of them. Morgan’s track record makes me question what’s going on with him. 2 years at MSU, transfers to UK for a year, transfers to Miami of Ohio, and now in the portal again.

Chandler led a Big 12 team in tackles last year with 110 total, so I’d like to think he’d be able to step right in and produce here.

I’m certain there will be some more transfer activity after spring ball. This staff sounds determined to reshape this roster one way or another - by internal development or bringing in more portal players.

Add Caden Clark to the list.

Real possibility.

Wonder why you think this is a real possibility?  I know his father passed & his little brother plays at Hoban but I don’t know.  Those things can change a person but I always got the feeling the family always thought they was better than Akron.  Maybe he wants to be closer for his mom.  We have a big TE room but he would be a good addition

Great talent.  But as I stated recently, how many tight ends do we need!!!!

My thinking is if you can upgrade, do it. I trust Coach Joe. May be bias but with grandkids at both St Ed's and Hoban I am close to both, and talent is not scarce there. Not real likely but wow if we could get Kilbane. What a motor this kid has. GO ZIPS. Hoping for Kilbane

Another higher touted local guy in the portal. Gates has already had a few stops though (if he actually made it to BC that is).

Man, he’s tough. Played at East. But I thought he was still at BC. Like you mentioned, did he ever get to BC? We’d potentially be his third stop (red flag?) but he’s the real deal.

I'm guessing there may be some position changes, but after Spring practice and the Spring game I would imagine things will shake out and we'll have a few players entering the portal.

Ohio.com article on Clark and Whigan-

https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/college/zips/2022/04/26/two-power-5-players-announce-plans-transfer-university-akron/9541774002/

Clark overshot and Alabama committed to him prematurely but he could certainly be a contributor here.  He's certainly starting off with the advantage of a great last name!

That some student-athletes choose to transfer isn’t news in college sports. What is proving interesting, however, is that UA’s Joe Moorhead possesses the influence, gravitas, whatever some will want to call it, to bring in athletes from Power 5 schools.

It’s becoming evident very quickly that Moorhead and his staff, all comprised of individuals who either played or coached at Power 5 schools at some point, have some powerful ties to those conferences.

How many open roster spots does UA have?

That’s a great question and one I’m not sure about. @LZIp has a running tracker, but it’s hard to know which former walk-ons are now on scholarship. There is an 85 scholarship limit for 2022 and we can bring in 32 players on scholarship for this year’s recruiting class. Probably means we will have some players transfer out soon.

Right now I'm showing us at 85 with the potential of I believe 4 more additions (but would need a player to leave for each addition since we are at 85). I want to double check the 2022 additions and position listings and then will post tomorrow and hopefully we can get a mod to pin it like you mentioned before.
