Way too early Two Deep Depth Chart

I know some freshmen will work their way onto the two deep, especially at the skill positions. I’m just not sure how long it will take for that to happen. Below is my best guess of how things will start out. What does everyone else think?

I didn't know Brank was in the portal either. Bummer there, but we have a lot of capable guys at TE. Outside of small toss ups here and there (like Jones and Thomas at DT),I think you are spot on @catdaddyp. I think we are in agreement on wanting another DE to challenge starting spot or least add depth (a true freshman and tweener listed in the top 2 isn't ideal IMO), another OL to challenge the guys on the interior, and another CB for good measure.

I’m not too sold on C. Thomas staying on the two deep at S tbh. I just wasn’t sure where to slot him and where he fits in. DE would be the natural answer, but he hasn’t put on the needed weight and was moved back to the secondary. A freshman may take over that spot sooner than expected.

I’d also like to see T. Williams and K. Davis push for starting positions along the OL sooner rather than later.

I left Behm out at LB, but I’m sure he’ll have first crack. I don’t think he’ll be able to hold it down though, since Fish was already hot on his tail by the end of 2022. Griffin was active on special teams and it’s time for him to make a leap.

It’ll be interesting to see if Darnell can challenge Clark for the backup TE spot.

That DE position makes me cringe. If those guys don’t develop/take the next step forward quickly, I feel like we are one injury away from our pass rush being on life support.

Roughly, how many scholarships do we still have available?

None that we know of, though probably some that have given up football we aren’t of and I’m sure more will transfer at the conclusion of spring ball after they realize they aren’t going to play.

C. Thomas seems to have turned into a tweener, no?  IIRC he was a highly-regarded safety in high school, but I guess he's not quite fast enough for safety at this level?  Is he physical enough to play LB?  He'd be an awfully light DE.

I’m not really sure where he fits in. Both staffs have tried to use him in a pass rushing capacity, but to no avail. He did not excel at Nickel and will probably have a hard time holding off the incoming DBs at Safety (assuming he’s currently ahead of them). We only use 2 linebackers and they require a different build and skillet than Thomas brings. “OLBs” are basically specialists in the 4-2-5 defense as they are mostly used to sub in for the Nickel against heavier sets. Those guys need to bring something else to the table such as the flexibility to play defensive end. Itll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Still early and we’re probably not completely finished with roster turnover, but here’s a potential projection going into the summer. There are a number of different possibilities, which is exciting considering the upgraded roster talent. I’m sure this is not how the depth chart will finish in 2023, but interesting to look at during the slow summer months.

I sure hope that Tahj Bullock can outplay Undercuffler quickly. I don't have that much confidence in Undercuffler and I'm hoping he will be our 3rd option at QB especially since Irons probably won't be able to play every game during the season based on past history.

This was pretty much going to be my post as well. In addition to not having much faith in Undercuffler, I also think it's important to have your backup be a similar style as your starter to keep a consistent playbook. Irons' playbook is drastically different than Undercuffler's.

I’d also like to see him push for the backup spot and expect he will, especially as the season progresses. That being said, I actually came away from the spring game feeling good about Undercuffler. He’s not DJI by any stretch, but I liked the way he commanded the offense and made fairly quick decisions with the ball. I feel comfortable with Undercuffler leading the way if he has to play significant snaps. Bullock has some serious size for a QB and would certainly be more of a threat in the run game. We’ll have to see how quickly he picks up on the offense. There’s a lot of talent in that QB room. Time for coach Fess to coach them up.

updated 6/29 with all 2-deep spots filled in except 2nd team returner (after Hester)..

Can’t argue with much of that. A few thoughts though:

- Kinda hard for D. Thomas to compete for a roster spot when he isn’t on the roster. Maybe he’s back before the season starts?
- M. Walker will likely compete for the Z spot with Gathings and Wilson.

- George probably projects more as an IOL leaving Frank and Kindred as the likely backups (or starters) at OT.

- I didn’t realize there was an Ali Barker was on the roster?

- No Kabbash Richards listed.
- JoeMo said Corey Thomas is officially a safety. Not sure if something has changed there?

- Maybe Behm is initially the starter at MIKE, but I can’t see any scenario where that stays the case.

Thanks. Didn’t know that was official. Seems I recall seeing him for a visit, but nothing else. Looks like he has a picture of himself in a Zips uniform now, so assuming it’s official.

I've also seen him in a few photos posted by the zips or one of their media people can't remember which one but I know I've seen him in some of the summer practices.

This is funny, if you think Zayden won't crack that depth cart you must not no Miami football!

I hope he does. It would be great for everyone. There is definitely some opportunity to get some playing time at CB, but I think expecting a true freshman to come in and crack the 2 deep over other proven D1 players might be a tad bit biased and a discredit to the other great athletes on the team.
