TennZip replied to Zip_ME87's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Results from Thursday Night Virginia gets a 2-1 win over California SMU was very impressive in a 5-1 win over Syracuse Georgetown 2-0 over Providence Connecticut 2-1 over Akron Cornell got a 1-0 win over Penn Princeton continued its great season with a 3-1 win over Harvard What happened in RPI ???? Princeton and Virginia stayed at #1 and #2 SMU moved up from #11 to #7 Connecticut jumped from #21 to #12 Georgetown did not have a strong opponent so they only improved from 19 up to #18 The winner of the Georgetown- UConn game will almost certainly finish ahead of Akron in RPI. Cornell improved from #22 to #21 Akron , with the loss.......dropped from #8 in RPI to #10 in RPI..... - Today

If we lose, we can say Purdue took back the #1 ranking because of us. -

By "reeling in" I mean get him to make a significant contribution to the basketball program. Co-funding or helping to promote a proper basketball arena. Possibly King James Arena?

No, Wistrcill is replacing a different yet-to-be-publicly-announced departures.

Purdue/Alabama was a good game. Purdue is really solid. Two very good bigs and a strong 7'4" backup, though Trey Kaufman-Reay who was playing his first game left the game hurt with a couple of minutes left. The guards are also very good. I can see the Zips competing on the perimeter but the inside is going to be very tough. The Boilermakers killed a very athletic and solid Bama squad on the boards. -

Purdue probably works closely with whatever lab grows Edey, Wemby, Olivier, etc. -
Those 16 steals are an all-time NCAA D-1 record. I watched the game for a bit at the start of the second half and they were getting destroyed. Saw one Zips basket and Notre Dame running all over them. Now they are a top 15 team, so I have no idea how the Zips stayed as close as they did.

Yurachek is out. Wistrcill is replacing him. 😉

Currently in a very close game. Have this one be a super hard fight and not come back totally focused -

Where does Purdue find this pipeline on 7'4" players? He's no Zach Edey but I'd still be happy to have him. -
I think that's one of the reasons Carney seems a better fit. He's no introvert. Not that introversion is bad...I'm an introvert haha. But head ball coach isn't necessarily the best role for an introvert.

Good post. I just want to launch a conversation off of it. We have had a few centers at Akron during Groce’s era similar to Barre. Tall, mobile, shot blocker type; Riak, Aziz and briefly Gueye. The other type of center we are accustomed to obviously is the Freeman type. Very versatile, athletic and skilled with more of a power forward frame. You can add Sayles, Lyles and now Marvin to that list. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Oggie play the 5 spot in time as well. But the last center type we are not too familiar with at Akron is what I call the “earth mover” center. I witnessed it with Illinois. They are big, strong and weigh about 250lb. They typically range between 6-8 and 6-10, but have a low center of gravity. They are immovable objects. The only guy that has fit this description was Kostelac. They are less versatile and athletic, but can be highly skilled and effective in Groce’s system. They don’t run the break as fast as the others, but they do run the court. Brisco is an earth mover. We have had other MAC teams use earth mover centers against us recently. I don’t remember their names, but the Zips recruited one of them. Any way it will be nice to have a big body to throw out there during those match-ups especially. Personally, I would like to see Brisco cut his teeth with some time against the 6-11 big for Purdue. And I would let Barre get some time against their 7-4 center. The rest of the time I would play small with Lyles and let their bigs chase us up and down the court.
