The Zips have shot the 3 ball at a bad 32.7% clip this season. In order to score from mid-range with the same efficiency, the Zips would have to shoot at >49% from mid-range. To put that into perspective Freeman, one of the best shooters in college basketball within 5 feet of the rim, makes 57.5% of his shots. I'm guaranteeing no team in college basketball shoots anywhere close to 49% from mid-range. That isn't the answer.

Crazy to think KD loaded his OOC schedule with a bunch of cupcakes, just to fall back to earth during conference play. I've never seen that before.

There is quite a disparity between the top 4 and the bottom 8. Top 4: 55-21 overall, 19-5 conference Bottom 8: 59-93 overall, 17-31 conference

My opinion regarding HS/JUCO recruiting (in the MAC) for the 2023 class: - Eastern Michigan should be #1. - #2-#8 should be between Akron, Central Michigan, Miami, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Toledo, and Ohio. All of these schools have some strong players and there isn’t too much separation between any of them. - #9-11 should be Northern Illinois, Ball State, and Bowling Green. - Kent State should be last. As for the transfers: - Our class may turn out to be just as strong as any other outside of Kent State. It looks like Burns has taken a similar approach to JoeMo of last year and has decided to really hit the portal hard in his first year. He’s landed some talented players, but it remains to be seen how well they are coached. I strongly feel we are recruiting on par with the better teams in the MAC at this point. Now it comes down to development and coaching. I’ll go through and update key departures soon.

Pretty much. The worst shot in basketball is the long 2. A midranger is close behind that. Say you shoot 3-10 from three in a segment of a game. that's 9 points in 10 attempts. Zips average 32% collectively. Freeman takes probably 95%+ of his shots inside 8 feet using post moves, not jump shots. He shoots 58% from the floor. In ten trips, he would have to make 5-10 to equal and overcome the scoring output Akron would have during a 10 possession run of only 3s. Asking Sammy, Hank, Tavari, Nate, etc. to shoot 50% on shots they do not have in their arsenal is not realistic. Dan D'Antoni explained it well after they lost a game to Pitt a couple years back something like 112-106. A reporter was grilling him about not getting it inside and he said that an open corner three averages 1.2 points per attempt where as a contested layup or back to the basket post play averages 0.78. I don't know what those numbers look like for the 2023 Akron Zips. Over the last couple of years, they are certainly better than average with Freeman's usually smart and skillful play down there that had him leading the country in FG% a couple of years. This team has one guy that can make a midranger with regularity. While they can probably get better finishing at the rim from Tribble, smarter shots from Freeman, or the obvious higher % of wide open 3s made, I don't really see the offensive strategy being an issue, moreso the execution.

As I read comments on this board that Kent could go undefeated and having watched them play, I believe that our offense must get better. We have seen a number of slow starts on offense and long scoring droughts. Please post any suggestions on how this team can improve its offense. Here are my three suggestions: When Freeman gets the ball in the lane, Tribble always cuts to the middle for a quick pass. It never happens and he just stands there and it makes an easy double team on Freeman. It is part of the offense but it never works. When we get Freeman the ball, stop the cut to the basket. What is wrong with designing plays where we take a 15 foot jump shot. This team struggles with the 3 ball and I rarely see any jump shot that is not a 3 ball. Design some plays where players can get a short jump shot. I think Tribble would benefit from taking shorter shots. We need more players to score and attack the baskets. Both Tavari Johnson and Nate Johnson have shown the ability to score. However, they rarely attack the basket or even attempt a shot. We need more balanced scoring. Neither Hankerson or Hunter are inside players. I think Groce has to encourage Johnson and Johnson to attack the basket or take some more shots.

The NCAA rifle national championship tourney will be held at the JAR in March. The top8 teams are invited and the Zips currently sit at #10. They have some big matches in the next few weeks that could propel them into the top 8. Analytics has its place in sports. The numbers don't lie. The mistake is made when programs place too much emphasis on analytics. Exhibit A- the Cleveland Browns. I've spent countless hours studying shots from every distance on the court. My conclusions: 1) shots that go in produce points; 2) points are good; and 3) the team that scores the most points wins.

Especially since Illinois pretty much paid half of Groce salary the first 2 years. And by that I mean Groce agreed to a greatly reduced salary his first two seasons at Akron because Illinois had offsetting language in his contract so the more Akron paid him, the less Illinois had to pay him for his buyout.

Larry didn’t do much good. But going with the proven Groce instead of the likes of Jim Christian, Rick McFadden, Dru Joyce, or Anthony Stewart (RIP) was both a no-brainer and a life saver post KD.

Just watched the end of UConn's thumping of Butler. Ali's line- 21 minutes played, 0-1 shooting, 0 rebounds, o assists, two fouls, one turnover, zero points.

Watching the Buffalo/Toledo game and could tell the announcers were getting bored at the end. No intensity. Lay ups at will. I was half joking when I wrote yesterday that Pinky got lucky having his best team in a crappy MAC year. But I may have been on to something. I saw that EMU gets another Friday night game on 2/3. That had to be the Bates factor. Zips are beating low level competition.

We can chalk up this win to great defense and X having a great game. I hate to see Hankerson, Hunter and Tribble being so one dimensional. Hankerson and Hunter can only shoot from the outside and Tribble can only score inside. Hankerson and Hunter were a combined 3 for 17 with the 3 ball and took a combined 3 shots from inside the 3 line. Tribble was 4 for 7 scoring inside and had a good game for 9 points. I cannot remember the last time Tavari scored a basket. However, he is playing good defense except he gave up one offensive rebound where he just stood and watched the rebound. We shot 35 3 balls and only shot 22% and won. You will not see that in many games. Any road win is a good win so no complaints just observations.
