This team has enough talent to win 5 or 6, but so far under Moorhead they haven’t learned how to win. For that reason I am going with 3-9 (Colgate, Buffalo, & Kent). I hope I am wrong.

3-9. Wins over Colgate, Kent, and Buffalo

They rank Joe Moorhead as the 9th best coach in the MAC. I think that’s pretty good considering he hasn’t done much in his first couple of years.

Kid went to St. John Bosco. That school is a high School powerhouse. Looks like Cal Berkeley also offered him out of high school.

More good news for Enrique - a Yahoo Sports article on 10 players who have helped their draft stock at the combine - https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-draft-combine-10-players-who-helped-their-draft-stock-172423141.html
In order to succeed in the NBA, he is going to need to be able to play the 3 because he is too small for the 4. I think its why they are testing him out on the wing. They want to see if he can knock down threes. Sounds like he's doing it, which is good news for him. Keep practicing your medium to long range shots Enrique!

I hope he sucks even more in Pittsburgh than he did here.

Every team will lose at least a few players they don’t want to lose. That’s just the nature of the portal. Recruiting has not been an issue with this staff. Keep in mind they’ve only had one full offseason of recruiting. The first year was a crash course to make up ground and find quality HS prospects that were not already committed. The portal brought in a few guys from that class that have gone on to make All-MAC (SJL, Adams, Whigan, George, Martin). QB recruiting has been the biggest bugaboo so far. I say that and there’s always the chance Wasel, Bullock, or whoever is brought in this year will prove that statement wrong.

Winning hopefully leads to that, but I understand your point because Toledo and Miami don’t draw much more than us. Yes, need the money. I just want more than five home games per year.
-
I fear that the two disastrous seasons under Moorhead are going to lead to the handful of good players left leaving for greener pastures. Who wants to come here?

I’m leaning toward this as well. The opportunity to foster another one or two yearly rivalry games. Add in a ‘challenge’ with the Sunbelt Conference & you’ve got a nice yearly schedule.
I know that playing P5 schools brings in a lot of revenue for the football program, but it would be nice to get at least six home games per year. Not saying we need seven like most P5’s, but not five either.

Kentucky was never going to come here to play. We are getting a hefty payout from them and another one from OSU. That money will be invested in improvements at Infocision Stadium.
What did I miss? Did Kentucky buy their way out of the contract that they had with Akron that was going to have them go on the road next year to play us?

Come March, that YSU loss will haunt Groce and the Zips.
I doubt the committee will take exhibition games into account. Zips are 1-0 on the season.

I went to bed when it was 27-10 and woke up to see the Zips won?! Heck yes!
Me too! I was disgusted until I woke up this morning and read a text from a friend who said we rallied in the 4th quarter and won. Great thing to wake up to! Keep it rolling next week in Oxford!

Yep. People are going to call this an overreaction but: fire Joe Moorhead now. By doing it now we hopefully have a head start on 2024 not being a lost season.
No coach can fix this overnight. It’s going to take 3-5 years of roster turnover and coaching. QB play has been terrible, but the OL, although improved over 2022, still sucks. How many yards rushing did we have last night? How many times was our QB pressured or sacked? Maybe Joe will move some guys around to try to get a better combination, but you can’t fix it over night. There are some good young players and some transfers to build on, but OL play still isn’t up to FBS standards. Defense is much improved and that is a big positive!

If Undercuffler plays against Temple, we win that one. I don’t want to see DJ Irons for the rest of this year.

Thank God for our defense! Let’s see what our offense can do with a short field.
-
I have never been sold on DJ Irons as a pure passer. Jeff Undercuffler has a much smaller sample size than DJ, but in that sample size, he has looked better. Maybe Irons plays well in practice, but can’t handle the pressure that comes with games? Maybe his shoulder is shot? IDK, but I believe we would have won yesterday if someone else was under center, even if it was only for the fourth quarter. What I saw yesterday was a QB who couldn’t make a throw when he needed to. This is a very concerning problem. The defense played well enough to win and it is much improved, especially the secondary, but the LB’s held their own as well. DL is a work in progress, but we all knew that coming into the season.
-
Forgot about the low throws. MANY of those!
-
It was so frustrating to me that Joe continued to stick with Irons when it clearing wasn’t working. Overthrows, throws behind, and then that pick. Ugh!

Feels like 0-16 browns
Nothing is that bad, but it certainly feels like another one score loss. Offense needs to wake up.

These Pro-Temple announcers suck. Our defense needs a three and out to start the third quarter.

I remember looking at Arth's 2021 team and schedule and wondering "How will this team win more than one game?!" (they won 2). We've come a long way.
Sep 2 (Sat) 2:00 PM Away Temple
Prediction - Zips offense surprises the Owls. Zips win 34-31 (1-0)
Sep 9 (Sat) 6:00 PM Home Morgan State
No messing around...Zips win 51-9 (2-0)
Sep 16 (Sat) 7:00 PM Away Kentucky Lexington, Ky.
Zips keep it close at the half, but a couple explosive second half plays carry Kentucky to a 41-24 win (2-1)
Sep 23 (Sat) TBA Away Indiana Bloomington, Ind.
WKY took these guys to OT last year. Hoosiers aren't very good. I think the Zips lose in a tight one. 27-24 (2-2)
Sep 30 (Sat) TBA Home Buffalo Akron, Ohio
We should have beaten Buffalo last year. We will this year. Zips win 45-24 (3-2)
Oct 7 (Sat) 3:30 PM Home Northern Illinois Akron, Ohio
Pounded these guys last year. We'll do so again. Zips 51-16 (4-2)
Oct 14 (Sat) TBA Away Central Michigan Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Gifted the Chipps a win last season. History doesn't repeat itself. Zips win 35-20. (5-2)
Oct 21 (Sat) TBA Away Bowling Green Bowling Green, Ohio
Who knows which BG team shows up? Tough to figure the Falcons out. Zips lost by 3 last season. Bullish that Joe schemes hard to prevent back-to-back BG losses, and the JoMo Zips round into form. Zips win 30-27 (6-2)
Nov 1 (Wed) 7 or 7:30 PM Home Kent State Akron, Ohio (InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field)
No way the Zips lose this one. Arth was #heretodevelop. Joe is #heretopoundkent. Zips win 39-20 (7-2)
Nov 8 (Wed) 7 or 7:30 PM Away Miami University Oxford, Ohio
Zips due for a letdown, and Miami always seems to have their number. Miami wins 20-19. (7-3)
Nov 14 (Tue) 7:00 PM Away Eastern Michigan Ypsilanti, Mich.
How did EMU get good at football? If they can play winning ball, anyone can. Unfortunately, the improved Eagles win 42-31. (7-4)
Nov 24 (Fri) Noon Home Ohio Akron, Ohio (InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field)
OU is down to their 4th string QB. Zips eek out a 19-17 win and look forward to their bowl game. (8-4)
Offensively, the Zips should be able to hang with anyone. OL will be improved. RB is MUCH improved. WR should be as good, or better than last year. I expect a lot from Banks at TE.
DL should be passable. Lots of size and mature bodies to choose from. Fingers are crossed a couple unknowns step up and make an impact.
LB scares me. None of the returning guys made much of an impression last year. Hopefully a year in the system and in the weight room yields a big improvement.
Secondary should be a strength...IF the DL can generate some QB pressure.
8-4 is a crazy prediction considering we've won 8 total games since we beat Northwestern in 2018. But I believe we're a MUCH better team that the one Jo inherited last year. Crazy goal...but definitely possible.
I love your enthusiasm. I went with 6-6. If we win that opener in Philadelphia, then 8-4 is very realistic. I had forgotten that Kurt Warner’s son is there. Our defense is going to be challenged.
-
Five wins at best (4-4) in MAC. OL and DL are improved, but still below average compared to the rest of the league and w/o much depth IMO.

5 wins

Moorhead 2024 make or break season to keep job?

No. They cannot afford to pay him to not be here. Even if they could, who would want to come here to replace him? Whoever it is, they need to figure out how to recruit offensive linemen. THIS position group has been garbage for as long as I can remember.
