  1. I have to agree with Jake on some levels. I'll use Ptt as an example, after driving by it and finding it is difficult hard to separate its buildings from non-University buildings. It does not seem to have been built with a clear identity and to me not very inviting or attractive. I can see the benefits of mixing students with downtown businesses. Pitt probably has a lot more food and entertainment options for its students but I don't like the overall look. Now if the city of Akron can pony up some money and build a better arena than the University can do alone, than I can put my emotions aside and say build it downtown.
  2. I'm not exactly sure that the pay scale for an incoming head coach is all that important. Of course it would be if the goal was to convince an already established Div. 1A coach like Pete Carroll but Akron is unable to come up with type of money anyway. There has to be plenty of excellent candidates waiting for an opportunity to showcase their abilities at this level and would be willing to come to Akron regardless of pay. With very few Div. 1A head coaching jobs in existence and even less positions being available in a given year, a coach waiting for a job opportunity would probably find it difficult to pass up an offer. The uptake for such a coach is huge. Turn this train wreck into a bowl winner a few times and then pay scale would probably become an issue.
  3. My answer largely depends upon who is paying. If the city will contribe a substantial amount of money towards a downtown arena, then I can support a downtown arena.
  4. Although I was not yet born, I remember my mother telling me about seeing a meteor during that timeframe in Canton. She described it as being extremely bright as it burned up as the night sky changed into daylight.
  5. I always thought that coaches from mid-majors use the opportunity to play upper tier BCS teams as a recruiting tool. I recall Akron football players in the 90s comment that they picked Akron because they would have the opportunity to play against Nebraska who dominated at that time. These guys are competitors and as such probably want to play upper tier programs.
  6. Thanks for the picture Mr. Hagen, but "Now listen here, you smooth-talking sonofabitch! Let me lay it on the line for you and your boss, whoever he is. Johnny Fontane will never get that movie. I don't care how many dago, wop, guinea, greaseball goombas come out of the woodwork."Jack Woltz
  7. Corrosion is a multi-billion dollar a year problem for the military, yet the D.o.D. is only providing $500,000 to (help) the University launch the first bachelor's degree program of its kind in the nation. I know money is tight, but only $500,000.
  8. Although watching opponents like Eastern Michigan and Buffalo don't light any fireworks in my pants, I won't be anymore excited about watching Rice, SMU, Tulane, etc. Playing in state opponents are more compelling to me. IMO, C-USA teams don't get anymore respect than MAC teams, yet its teams are probably better on average (at least in football). Tulsa has a pretty good football program though I bet the average college football fan would not be aware of it. Wasn't Memphis 5th in its conference for the MCB, yet dominated the Zips physically. Defeating C-USA opponents won't get us much respect, and losing to them will only hurt the program's reputation. Just not much upside.
  9. I couldn't agree more, our marketing department has to come up with shirts/gear that make our fans stand out and look more singular.
  10. If there is anybody in the Columbus area who is in need of tickets I have three (seated together) that I'm willing to give away. My wife and little one are not feeling that well and with the possibly with drifting on I71 and having to be at work early Monday morning I just cannot make the game. If anybody is interested just send me a pm.
  11. IMO there is more than just a paycheck when scheduling upper-tier BCS conference teams (though I agree money is the deciding factor). I always thought it was also used to obtain recruits. I'm sure JD tells his recruits that they will get the chance to play against the big boys if they committ to Akron. It was clear our guys were charged up going into the game against OSU. Maybe there are some former players on this board who can answer whether they would have rather played against a likely win Sunbelt opponent or a likely loss upper BCS opponent.
  12. While K-ent's yellow (or gold as they insist it is) is ugly, it does stand out.
