  1. There is an article in the latest issue of The Atlantic covering the increased violence and danger of fraternity life, including a rather shocking yet hilarious set of examples related to damage to one's most private areas. Any parent with a college-bound child really needs to read this article.

no. Not all fraternities are like that. Hazing has not place at Akron and I personally am in one of the social fraternities. I can guarantee you that behavior like that is not tolerated by not only our members but the governing council at Akron and our national headquarters.

  2. Just so everyone is aware, that was the entire marching band that was at the game, not the blue and gold brass (which is normally there). There is a new director this year since the Director of bands has just retired and things are still in transition. So they will not be taking up that much room the whole season whether or not that is where they will be residing this year.

  3. My concern with the JAR is that the ceiling isn't very high, and the corners are a mess. Could the corners be removed to put seating all around and retain structural integrity? The cost issue comes in again too.

No... Long structural story short... they would have to do major, and I mean MAJOR construction to reinforce what those walls are holding up in order to make that a possibility. It would be more worth while to just bulldoze the JAR and start over.

  4. Oh right, that is going to change. I didn't like the amount of chairs that were in the rows so I changed it and haven't gotten around fixing those boxes. The end zones I am not too sure about, I was going to wait for the seats to be set before I made any decisions in that area, but I am planning on keeping the corners open to open up the concourse area underneath the stands so it isn't cramped for the concessions also for handicapped seating.

  5. Out of curiosity, is the floor sized for hockey also (not that it necessarily should)? Or is that just the normal extra for the cheerleaders/dance team etc.?

The floor is not sized for a hockey rink the extra room is just the normal extra you talked about.

  6. Well, I'm just tarting co-op so I don't completely hate it.... yet ;)

    Everything is 1:1

Each bowl is in 4 sections and each different kind of box is its own part/assembly. If I didn't do that, I would probably go through sooo many keyboards from slamming my head on them trying to make it work. :D

    And thanks for the tip!

  7. Alright here is the initial design of the bowl. Right now, it is sized to seat slightly less that 6k in the lower bowl and I have not done the math for the upper bowl. If I had to guess it is approximately 1-2k, but that can be adjusted when the seats are actually placed in there. There are 5 open loges with 4 rows of seats a piece and 4 closed loges for those that would want more privacy. The media bench is move up to that same level in in the middle of the closed loges. There is plenty of room for more loges around the ends of the bowl. My intention is for the corners to be left open for handicapped accessible seating as well as to have the same "behind the scenes" cavernous effect as the football stadium on the 50 yrd line home side.

I am on the side of the discussion so far that we need to have 2 tiers in the arena for that big time feel. I have a plan to handle the "empty feeling" that some people here are concerned with when we have smaller crowds for women's basketball and such. But that is a discussion for a later time once the main problems are fixed.

I'm sure you will let me know what you think of it. I want this to be a collaborative project so keep the jeers to a minimum and have your comments be constructive.

P.s. sorry I couldn't figure out how to get these into a picture format so I had to attach the PDF files. They do not contain malicious software in any way shape or form.

  8. Yes, I am still working on it. Last week I got slammed with things to do, but I have the main shape of the arena done and I'll probably post that later today if not tomorrow. Also, placing 7,000-8,000 seats takes a considerable amount of time, more than I was expectin

  9. If there was a one level loge/press box level wouldn't that allow for a greater overhang without limiting those seats in the lower section since at least in the press area they would ideally have the time inside the boxes? That would allow for the upper deck to be closer (horizontally) to the court.

Also it might just be me. When I look at Xavier's stadium, with that giant wall there, it feels like the wall is in the way. Personally I've never been there but the picture is not very flattering.

  10. Hi Everybody

    Lets have some fun,

Post on this thread what you want the new arena to look like or what you'd like to see it include and I'll draw a 3-D model of it. Its that simple. I am an engineering student at the university on co-op so I have extra free time and I'd actually like to see what you as a collective board would like to see what a new arena ook like.

As you post here, I'll render it in AutoCAD Inventor and post screen shots. If you have a contradicting opinion to what it should look like, just explain why and I'll modify/expound on the drawing. I've always been a visual guy and after all this talk on the board, I'd like to see what it would look like.

  11. I think you have identified why people don't come out and support other winning Akron teams. The rifle team thanks you for not naming names. :ninja:

No, the rifle team doesn't want people attending their events is that 1) the range is horrible to have spectators, its too small and they have tons of equipment and 2) rifle as a whole is not spectator friendly to begin with.
