Eastern Gateway Community College in Youngstown closed and a large number of students went to YSU. Their increase is a one-time anomaly

Not quite. Over 400 came from EGCC, while enrollment was up 1,100. Certainly a factor, but not a majority of increase.

No road trip to Clemson, was really looking forward to this trip for a few years now, Damn COVID-19, I had already come to terms with it but I guess it’s official now

Greetings from down 76... just chiming in since this involves YSU. Do I ultimately expect the game to be canceled, yes because we are on the verge of the season being suspended in its entirety, but still think two schools an hour away not playing because of not being in the same conference is questionable. Maybe Adrienne Robbins from that TV station can ask DeWine his thoughts?

Anyhow, just wanted to point out that your tweet references the WRONG MAC :)

  3. Give me a break, you seriously think the decision to hire Scarborough over Tressel (or not pursue Tressel) was because of faculty? Tressel was successful in his role as an administrator? Really!? Please. I think you've been drinking too much of the kool aide.

But let's not let facts get in the way of beating up on "elitist faculty". YSU has a defecit as well that they've had to reduce, and it wasn't reduced by Tressel's glorious fundrasising efforts.

There is another revenue stream that can be aided by having tenure-track contingent faculty...grant $$. Part of gaining tenure at a university involves an amount of published peer-reviewed research. This research can potentially bring in huge sums of grant money. But nevermind...yes, it's the evil "elitist snub nossed" researchers/educators that are the problem.

YSU's deficit was $7.1 million as Tressel took office. Through a hiring freeze, eliminating positions that had "help wanted" advertisements, restructuring the high-up administration, and enforcing an ACE union contract on its members, he has been able to address the shortfall. However, it has not been all cuts. YSU's undergraduate applications exceed 6,000 this year, almost double the amount of last year. Naturally, that doesn't necessarily mean it will translate into butts in seats, but it is a sign of a new-found interest in YSU as Tressel himself has gone to Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Erie, and Pittsburgh talking to dozens of high schools about the school. The Vindicator had an interesting article last week on Tressel I encourage you to read, "Tressel and the art of caring, and not caring": http://www.vindy.com/news/2015/jul/05/tressel-and-the-art-of-not-caring/

Prior to Tressel applying to become President of Youngstown State, I heard from a well-known individual at the YSU Foundation that Tressel had some concerns about the financial health of Akron. After looking at UofA's financials on the state auditor's website, the amount of debt the school had was eye-opening, but to be quite frank, I had no idea it was as bad as many of you had indicated on here.

  4. MAC looking better than the Big Ten? The worst team in the Missouri Valley (Indiana State) went into Muncie, IN and beat Ball State last night. Furthermore, the Sagarin has the MVFC ahead of the MAC for yet another week. FCS top 25 poll this week may have 7 of the 10 MVFC teams ranked.

    12 MWC-WEST (A) = 64.79 65.07 ( 12) 6 64.98 ( 12)

  5. FWIW, Jim Tressel signed his contract tonight. First two years he will make $300,000, a full $75,000 less than the two previous President's of Youngstown State. The salary for the third year has yet to be determined. Per the Vindicator, YSU offered him more money, but he said he would take job for lesser salary, which he did.

  6. Thanks for the Info. Good to know our student body actually wants a PhD too, the last two student presidents were definitely the best UA has to offer (and I'm being very serious when I say that). Die-hard Akron, Die-hard Zips.

But Define "local TV station"...because Akron has 5 that I know of, probably another one I'm not aware of.

Akron is part of the Cleveland market. For a city as large as Akron, and Canton for that matter, it seems unfortunate that you folks are lumped into the Cleveland market.

Youngstown has its own NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, MyTV, and CW. Of course PBS is shared between Youngstown/Can't on 45/49.

  7. According to 21 WFMJ in Youngstown, the Akron Student Government has thrown their support behind Toledo Provost Dr. Scarborough. Will be interested in hearing if you guys have heard who your faculty have thrown their support behind.

All signs point to Tressel being picked by YSU, as early as their meeting on Thursday afternoon when they intend to select, not announce, their choice.

  8. YSU's last President to sneak out of town after 7 months was the previous Murray State President. He was well liked and well thought of and someone many felt fortunate enough to get. I think the biggest issue in Youngstown is the fact that YSU Engineering Dean Dr. Abraham was not a finalist for the 2nd straight time. He is a finalist for the provost at NIU and is credited for the launching of the STEM college at YSU and has played a major role in the growth of tech/high-end manufacturing in Downtown Youngstown.

  9. At the rate of speed YSU is going, you won't have to worry. They have already stated that they will pick their next President on May 8th and negotiate a contract with that individual with an announcement 1-2 weeks after.

I do take offense to the shots at the educational status of YSU, as I am a proud graduate of the school and can say unequivocally it prepared me extremely well for the challenges I encounter each day in my career. However, that is a topic for another day.

Again, I'd expect Tressel to be picked at YSU before Akron. If you haven't noticed, YSU is expediting the process, and they aren't doing that for nothing.

  10. Following YSU's 1 point win over Wright State on Saturday where they honored former YSU MBB head coach and current Akron asst. Dan Peters, YSU coach Slocum stated in his press conference (View Here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VC0kRdwQLkM) that there is talk of a Coaches vs. Cancer tipoff tournament between YSU and Cleveland State of the Horizon League and Akron and Can't State of the MAC next season. Each team would face the two teams from the opposite league in a tipoff tournament, presumably either at a neutral site or rotating amongst the arenas of each team. Naturally, there would be no inter-conference games as those will come later in the year during conference play.

Coach Slocum said Akron and Can't are on board with the idea, but that CSU is currently not 100% behind it. I personally think this would be a unique and fun tournament to open up the season, all for a great cause. Let's hope CSU gets behind this idea!

    Continued prayers for Coach Peters.

  11. My apologies if this was already posted, but former Ursuline star Jamel Turner appears to be headed to Akron. He's has a rocky ride the past few years but hopefully has his life moving in the right direction.

The kid is a tremendous talent, but I had figured he would go to college out of Ohio just to keep him away from any bad influences close to home. Hopefully Akron being an hour from Youngstown doesn't cause any issues.

  12. Hopefully we bring a couple hundred fans tomorrow for this game. I think you are clearly the favorites, but think we can definitely win.

You will notice we LOVE the three ball. We shoot it a ton and make a ton, but I think we shoot it a bit too much. Our bench has been lacking until the Toledo game last night.

I think it should be a war between us! We have not forgotten last year.

    See you all there!

I'm guessing this is supposed to imply that they would be seeking revenge from last year? dang good fight! losing by almost 30 points will sure teach us a lesson!

we probably won't be seeing much from this guy in a while...either that or he will show up flinging excuses

but quite frankly a blowout shows that we are on a completely different level than YSU

Horrible, despicable, and inept are three words to describe YSU's effort. Akron is clearly the better team, but that is without a doubt the worst performance I've seen YSU have since the 30pt loss at Robert Morris last year.

Best of luck this year. You guys are going to cause people havoc with the height down low.

  13. Should be a fun game. I enjoy the series as much as I do the one with CSU. The away games are easy to attend, even on a weeknight. The early line has the Zips giving 10 points. We shouldn't have any problem with a team that struggled against a terrible Toledo team. I see the Zips winning this one by an even dozen, with only two or three minutes for the end of the bench unlike the 7 or 8 they received in the last couple games.

While Toledo is not yet good, they don't appear to be the horrible mess they've been for the last few years. After all, their new coach HAS won a game at the JAR.

Our Coach has maybe 2-3 wins all time against their new coach, who used to coach in the Horizon at UWGB. He is a good one and let me tell you, he has a solid bunch of players to work with compared to last year. They won 4 games last year and already have 7 this year. Like YSU, they are not the same old shitty program of old.

Just like YSU is better than last year. Should be a dandy this evening. Any particular spot I should look to purchase a ticket?

  14. I'm pretty pumped for the game. I really do like the rivalry (wish you guys would just give in & play football @ the Info every year - wait, give a a couple years to get our feet under us).

I hope the Zips are as up for the game as I am. If they are, I'm predicting a pretty convincing win, seeing as how you guys struggled against Toledo. However, I was also expecting a convincing win last year and we were lucky to beat you guys. I hope YSU brings their 'A' game.

Hoping Chancey & Nik continue their good play & hope Brett decides to actually play some ball. Ironically, he was the one to get us over the hump against you guys last year.

    Go Zips!

We fell behind by 17 in the 1st half at Toledo. We then were on a tear in the 2nd half by NOT shooting the three and we cut the lead to 1. Then DuShawn Brooks fouled out and Toledo went on a 12-0 run and held on to win by 9.

And look at the model Ball State and Illinois State have working in 2013 and 2014. Would love to see it happen here too!

  16. Btw, shouldn't we be playing at YSU this year?

We don't even have Can't on the schedule. I believe Can't and Akron are AT Youngstown State next season. Don't quote me on that. The way the Horizon schedules two early conference games in December have thrown a wrench into scheduling for us.

I'd love to see that game in the Coveli Center. I'd really like to check the place out.

Basketball blows in there. It is a beautiful arena, but they don't setup seats behind each basket so you got a giant grey floor there. Beeghly is a lot more intimate. It is very much just like the JAR or the MACC.
