Zipsrifle
Looks like the team is back at full strength after being a little shorthanded over the break. This one wasn't even close. Next up, the NCAA Sectional in Wisconsin, a good showing means a good shot (pun intended) at the NCAA Championship match! Note: The date in the article is incorrect, the actual date is Feb. 12th and 13th. Date: January 29, 2005 Location: Penn State University Event: Akron –vs- Penn State University & Loyola University Akron Rifle dominates Penn State and Loyola The Zips rifle squad traveled to State College PA to face off against the Penn State Nittany Lions and Loyola University. When the smoke cleared, the Zips managed to capture both first and second place team honors. With some recent amazing scores, Senior Co-Captain Joe Milano continued his winning streak by earning top match honors with his 580 out of a possible 600. Sarah Kramer (577), Angie Engle (569) and Laura Kuntz (567) rounded out the rest of the Gold squad which easily outpaced Penn State and Loyola. In the air rifle division, freshman sensation Stephanie Elmore posted one of her best scores of the year and won top match honors with her 575 out of a possible 600. Coach Engle thinks the jump in Elmore’s scores may be due in part to her recent acquisition of a new rifle, but Elmore gives the credit to chocolate milk. Either way, lead by Elmore, the both Zips air rifle teams did what needed to be done and finished ahead of the competition. The next two weeks will be a very important time for the Akron rifle team to prepare for the next match. The NCAA requires all teams who wish to via for an invitation to the NCAA Rifle Championships to compete in an NCAA qualifier macth. On February 19 or 20, at approved locations across the USA, these teams will compete for the invitation. “We have been shooting the best we have in years,†states coach Newt Engle, “But we all know the invitations will only go to the top 8 teams and we are close, VERY close. So we have to do just a little tweaking to insure we are at our best for this match.†To make their bid for the NCAA’s, the Zips will travel to The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. The qualifier match will be fired on February 19 starting at 9:00 am.
