skip-zip Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 This could be a fun discussion. So far this season, we've seen many different lineups, and some crazy shifts in what guys are producing from game to game. But just for the sake of an early season discussion, who do all of you believe should be the starting five? Keep all considerations in mind: scoring, defense, assists, our desperate need for rebounds, etc. Here's my 5 as of today:StewardRobertsC. McKnightCventinovicLinhartI figure, this gives us our best front line to resolve our rebounding problem, and still be able to score points. I'd kinda like to see B. McKnight there, but I think his points off the bench are far more valuable to us right now. I think Roberts is emerging as our best 2-guard, and Steward will end up being our best choice to quarterback the offense, and hand out assists. The next 5....to round out the rotation:HumptyMcNeesB. Quickzips Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 For my money:Starters:Steward: Not shooting the ball particularly well, but it seems as if the team has a better flow when he's on the floor.McNees: One would think Roberts here, but I actually like him coming off the bench and leading the 2nd unitLinhart: Duh!C. McKnight: Probably our best offensive weapon for the first unit.Cvetinovic: It's hard to keep a guy with his attitude and hustle on the bench. Seems to have the attitude and body to be our best rebounder and isn't incompetent on the offensive end by any means.1st Substitution:Roberts and B.McKnight in for McNees and Cvetinovic: Brett brings in our most consistent scoring punch and he seems to play his best when his brother on the floor. Roberts seems like he's best suited to play that role that Cedrick did for so many years, leading the 2nd unit. Could take Steward off the floor instead of McNees if Steve's shot is on. Cvetinovic gets a breather as I hear he is still working on conditioning.Lineup: Steward, Roberts, Linhart, B.McKnight, C.McKnight2nd Substitution:Humpty and Bardo in for Steward and Linhart: Humpty's talent is obvious, but he's got to learn to calm down and play under control. He should still get minutes, but I don't quite trust him starting yet. Bardo only really gets the nod here because of his height. So far he has been frustratingly inconsistent. I'm going back to my initial assessment of him that he's never going to be more than a 10-15 minute a night guy. Needs to plant his behind in the paint, wait for the ball to come off the hoop and go get it more and stop worrying about everything else. Steward gets a blow b/c he's the obvious guy for Humpty to replace and Nate comes out to save his legs a bit for when we need some good defense down the road.Lineup: Humpty, Roberts, B.McKnight, C.McKnight, BardoFrom there I think you give Conyers a couple minutes subbing in for Chris. I have nothing against Jimmy, but his defense isn't THAT good to make up for the fact that he looks like a scared third grader in gym class on the offensive end. He almost looks like he cringes every time the ball comes his way. After that you start rotating the starters back in. Rinse and repeat. Quote
skip-zip Posted December 2, 2008 Author Report Posted December 2, 2008 Quickzips...I know what you're saying about Humpty. I wish I could say he should be a starter at the point guard position in my analysis. But up to this point, he seems to be more of an offensive sparkplug looking to score points, as opposed to a floor general who can run the offense effectively. And the fact that he only has a few assists through 5 games is really unacceptable if he is going plays a lot of minutes at the point. This is why I give the nod to Ronnie. Quote

That way every time you rotate guys in you have a sparkplug coming in. Those two guys (along w/ maybe Cvetinovic who I think should be starting) are our sparkplugs. As for Humpty, he'll get there. I don't doubt that. He's going to have to learn to play more in a system than improvising. I get the impression he was allowed a lot of freedom in High School because of his superior athletic talent. At this level, his athletic talent really isn't all that superior to other guards. He's got to learn to take that talent and work it into KD's system. If he does he has the makings of a very effective guard. Quote
skip-zip Posted December 3, 2008 Author Report Posted December 3, 2008 Good thoughts.I still think our most immediate problem is rebounding. That is why I think Nik, Chris, and Nate should play the most minutes in the frontcourt. Quote
Deeustin89 Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 I think the starting lineup this saturday might turn a few heads. Meaning i think this unit has a chance to be very productive. I love Humpty and Brett on the court together and if those two have decent games and Roberts can get warm, the Zips have a great chance to impress. Quote
