August 21, 2009: Akron vs. South Florida(exh.)

Recommended Posts

I just happened to notice that there was a soccer game the Friday before classes start against South Florida. Considering that Friday is the day most kids move into their dorms, what better way could there be to kick of the '09 fall semester? I'm sure it would give the new freshman a cool experience to remember. Not to mention, the games at 7:30, so most kids will be moved in already anyhow.I hope the AK-Rowdies can get the information out through zipmail or something. I don't know when they hold the AK-Rowdies sign ups, but if it's after that Friday, they should definetly send out a University wide email letting kids know about the game. IMO, it would be a huge mistake for them to pass up on such an opportunity, and I hope their new leadership is already planning something. Does anyone have any other ideas as to how they could get the word out before Friday, the 21st?

A Facebook event would probably be the way to do it. The AK-Rowdies set up a new FB group each year, and it seems to be the main way of communicating, along with emails.
Just want to say thanks for your suggestion -- I hope the Rowdies take up your idea, and that the UA futbol team(s), continue to be a prime recruiting ground for Rowdiedom and the Rowdies continue to be a big factor in the success of our teams. As far as South Florida goes, they are another of the rising powers in collegiate soccer. But, I believe that we shall win. Memorize that line, freshmen, and repeat it on Friday, August 21st starting at 1930 hrs.

Facebook is an awesome tool for communicating to current members and students, but what about all the freshman who won't have a clue? Many of them may want to go but won't know about it until the last minute. I'm sure they could find out by word of mouth, but if the AK Rowdies really want to get serious(as they said they have) and if they want to capitalize on the growth in students, then some other sort of organized message would do that. As I said, send out university wide email messages.

Yes they are. A couple of years ago they knocked off one of the top-ranked teams in the nation in the first round of the NCAA tourney ... on the road ... in cold weather, out of their element.
